well, i dont like Metallica at all. plus, Megadeth was my first metal band i got into. Megadeth's songs are just plain better.....

Kirk did most of Metallica's solos, but James sometimes had them, here and there.

If you listen to Metallica a lot, you'll be able to kinda tell who's doing it, at least I can with some of them.

Dave is definitley a better guitar player, that can be heard in the dueling lead guitars in megadeth songs. I like Hetfield's voice better though.......

I was fairly dissapointed with Megadeth's double live album in terms of vocals, not only did they sound shit but he coudn't even hit half the notes towards the end. Pretty dissapointing for a professional.

IMO mustaine is a FAR better guitarist and he has better vocals then hetfield...he dosnt have the greatest vocals at all but i still like them more then hetfield.

Hetfeild can shread like shit too, he just doesn't show off, he knows his place is a rythm guitarist and vocalist and he knows to stay there, which makes a guitarist good when you only do what your part says. But he gets a couple solos in and out, and you dont even know it until you see it live. And hetfeild's vocals are 20,000 times better than mustaine's vocals. Mustaine's vocals kinda remind me of a comic book, if it were to have sound. So hetfeild.

Dude, are you insane? Kirk sucks. Just watch some of their live videos and you'll see it for yourself. He is so fucking sloppy, he fucks up all the time, can't even play half his damn solos, and is addicted to his fucking wah pedal. When it comes to wah, he has zero creativity. It's just wah, wah, wah, wah, stupid. I have heard many guitarists who used a wah pedal and it just gave their playing a whole new dimension, it was crazy; Hammett's not one of them.
I think that even Hetfield is a better guitarist than Kirk Hammett. He is an awesome vocalist, at least was up until St. Anger. He is a much better vocalist than Dave, especially live, but one must keep in mind that while James is singing he is usually playing some pretty straight forward and fairly simply rhythm stuff, whereas Dave is singing and ripping up insane solos at the same time. It's a miracle the guy can sing at all when he's playing that shit.
Megadeth's music is also a hell of a lot more complex than Metallica's. And Dave didn't start doing Heroin until he was kicked out of Metallica. He was just a nasty drunk and used to beat the shit out of people when he'd get wasted.
As far as Metallica still being metal, I don't think that Cliff being alive would make a whole hell of a lot of difference. After all, he was just the bass player, (a damn good one, but still just the bass player). He didn't start the band, James and Lars did, and it was therefore them who decided which direciton Metallica and its music took.
Also, The System Has Failed kicks the shit out of St. Anger any day of the week. I am a huge Metallica fan, but am also a huge Megadeth fan as well.
Anyway, here's my final two cents.
Dave Mustaine = amazing guitarist, way better than both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett combined. Although he may have been an arrogant cunt, there's no denying this.
James Hetfield = amazing vocalist and songwriter, always was way better at singing than Dave, and he's also a pretty good guitar player. He may be an arrogant, self indulgent cunt now, but there's no denying that he wrote some of the greatest metal classics of all time.

Hetfield has better vocals and riffs, but Mustaine is a better soloist.

The way I see it, even Megadeth's zenith - Rust In Peace - cannot compare to either Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets or And Justice for All. And before all you Megadeth fanboys jump in with, "That's because Mustaine wrote those albums," he didn't; get over it.

Sure, the solos on RIP are better than those Metallica albums, but I have two words as to why: "Marty" and "Friedman". Mustiane is a better soloist than Hetfield, but none of his leads have ever inspired me to the same extent as Hammet's on the aforemetioned Metallica albums. Hammet only really began to saturate his solos with wah from the Black Album onwards when he started to shun classical leanings in favour of a blues influence - he doesn't overdo it on the preceding albums. Has Mustaine ever written a solo as mindblowing as Dyer's Eve? Nope.

When the dust settles, they will BOTH still be standing as giants of the thrash scene and two of the leading lights that shaped the music we love. But I still maintain that Metallica had a bigger influence than Megadeth and this quite simply has to be down to Lars, Cliff, Kirk and - most importantly in the context of this thread - James.

I have to concur with the comment about Kirks studio solos on the first few albums(ok not Kill 'em All as he just borrowed Dave's) Dyer's Eve is possibly the best/ignored Metallica song and Kirk's solo is incredible. But just listen to the Disposable Heroes or Damage Inc solos there's melody and mayhem and you can hum or sing them(possibly)! I found that very inspiring and influential.
Dave's solos, though good, didn't inspire me as much as his riffs or song writing did and most of his solos seem to end the same with the climactic run up to the 22nd or 24th fret and bend and hold.
Sadly Kirk has lost it with the purchase of the wah and insistence on the pentatonic and I feel that is a blatant waste of his talent

Man, it's not even just about the guitar solos for me, I just like Megadeth's more consistency and overall sound that's more technical than Metallica's. Even in their RTL and MOP days, Metallica sounds so redundant to ME

Anyone can sound good on recordings. Ashley Simpson can, and so can Kirk Hammet. But it's the live show that really makes or breaks you.
Kirk's been using that wah since way before the black album. You can hear it on every single album, except maybe Kill 'Em All.
I've watched a bunch of Metallica live videos lately and was absolutely appalled by Hammet's sloppiness and inconsistency. He fucks up all the time. Keep in mind that these are the songs he's been playing for 15-20 years now, so he should have them down pat by now. He doesn't. And then every live solo ends with some silly tapping and endless wah bullshit. The guy is absolutely horrible.
James isn't as bad, but he fucks up quite a bit lately, too. I saw a vid of them playing One, and on the clean intro pat, James kept speeding up and then slowing down. You'd expect something like this out of an amateur, but not a seasong veteran. James' playing and singing has gotten much vorse as time went on. I think that Metallica have gotten too comfortable and simply don't care about the music any more.
I will see Megadeth in August and my expectations are high, and I'm sure that Dave and the crew will live up to them. I might even post a review on these boards if I remember, and I'll tell you all in detail about the show and how it went.

Yes Kirk did use wah on albums prior to the 'Black' album but not to the level of annoying overkill on every solo. Metallica even got him a mat for it and christened it 'Kirk's wah wah mat' so maybe even they were taking the piss and he failed to pick up the hint!!
