Top 5 Craziest Riffs
OK, my top five craziest riffs would have to be
(In no order)
1.Slayer's "War Ensemble" Riff before the solo
2.At The Gate's "Unto Others" (theres a bunch throughout the song, but I like the one right before the solo
3.Dillinger Escape Plan's "Sugar Coated Sour", the runs are unbelieveable
4.Nile's "Chapter For Turning Into A Snake" (all riffs)
5.Nothingface's "Same Solution" chorus riff
I could probably think of better, but I just really wanted to know if anyone agreed with the "Unto Others" one...its the coolest.

Speed Of Light by Stratovarius has a pretty cool yet simple solo riff after the main solo...it kinda sends goosebumps down your spine when the drum starts breaking into it..its a real short and fast riff but its fun

sargent D's top 5 riffs
These are not in order but they are:
1. chorus riff on master of puppets (metallica)
2. intro riff onHell awaits PURE METAL (slayer)
3. verse riff on battery (metallica)
4. intro riff on holy wars (megadeth)
5. chorus riff on I'm the law (anthrax) I guess its two riffs but i like em both the same
Honorable mention:
1.March of the S.O.D. You might remember it as the intro theme to headbangers ball The heaviest thing I ever heard back in 87 (S.O.D.)
2. intro riff to war ensemble (slayer)
3. riff on one right before the solo, arguably the illest metal solo ever (metallica)

I wouldn't say Erotomania's that crazy (and not really Glass Prison for that matter), nor Master of Puppets (FFWF, and Trapped, yes). Personally:
-Speed Metal Symphony (Cacophony)
-The descending lick after "...the original good times girl" in Yankee Rose (DLR)
-Shyboy (DLR)
-Flight of the Bumblebee
-Paradigm Shift (Liquid Tension Experiment)
-Mr. Scary (Dokken)
most underrated I would say is the Scorpions "Sails of Charon" (later covered by YJM and Testament)- the intro solo.

Does anyone else see the similarities in the opening riff of "Seed of Hate" and the chorus riff in Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark At The Moon"?

The solo from Where The Slime Live by Morbid Angel kicks ass.
The beginning riffs from Human's Dust by Decapitated.
The first solo from Torch Of War from Vader is really cool.
All the appegiated parts and technical riffs from Necrophagist kick ass.
The intro from Enemy Within by Arch Enemy during the times of 0:00 - 0:41.
All the riffs from Lavaging Expectorate Of Lysergide by Carcass are cool also.

Converge's main riff in "Fault and Fracture" (verse riff)
Between the Buried and Me's "Mordecai", the song is full of crazy shit....well, the first half...
Mastodon's songs are full of them...good shit.
Strapping Young Lad's "Oh My Fucking God" is a great one.
The Forsaken's "Incinerate" has alot of really cool ones also.

Categories of awesome riffs are...
Fucking spectacular music:
- 5 mins into Opeth's 'Blackwater Park', just after the interlude. Now THAT is serious fucking rock & roll - if they don't play shit like that in Valhalla/heaven/whatever, I'll catapult my entire family into the sun right now.
- The main riff from 'Mountain of Doom' by Tiamat. Not fast at all, but somehow packed to the scrotum with full-on energy.
Ultra-mega-uuber fast:
- The riff just before verse one from Slayer's 'Raining Blood'.
- The first riff from Megadeth's 'Holy Wars'
- Everything fast ever made by Death, Chuck fucking rules...or at least he did...
Ape-like, head-mashing, solid, etc., etc.:
- The riff (y'know, THE riff, man) from 'The Bleeding' by Canibal Corpse. The greatest headbanging track of all time.
- The chorus from 'Rotten Body Fluids' by Embalmer - this makes you literally want to jump around like an out of control gorilla. (btw, this one sucks musically, I just think it's a really great tune to mash your head to.)
Power intro:
- 'Desperate Cry', Sepultura.
- The start of Ozzy's 'Randy Rhodes Tribute' album (is that the right spelling?). They go strait from 'O Fortuna' into 'Crazy Train'....makes me wish I wasn't quite so removed in space & time from things like awesome Ozzy concerts....
Token weird shit to make me look all eclectic:
- The entirety of 'Carry Stress in the Jaw' from Mr Bungle's 'Disco Volante' album. It's a random mixture of awesome, awesome 'riffs'. If you don't like this, you obviously haven't listened to it fourty seven thousand times. Do so.

ok this is an old topic but it's cool and im stoned and wanted to put in my two cents...
1. Gorguts - "Obscura" intro or the breakdown of Nostalgia (the one in 15/8).
2. I second "Carry Stress in the Jaw."
3. pretty much all the riffs from "Sugar Coated Sour"
4. Messugah Catch 33 intro.
5. Dying Fetus - Praise the Lord...some really high end riff.
and, not really 'crazy' but:
dissection...somberlain
end of inhale.exhale. by Nasum.
all those fucking pure metallic sounding riffs that Dimebag pulls off.
sorry, im not good with song titles.
fantomas shit from the first cd...

And to mention one individual, the intro riff in Blackstone Wielder by Candlemass.
BTW, ain't there like hundred of these threads already?

Sleep Terror - "Probing Tranquility" The whole song
Cephalic Carnage - "Black Metal Sabbath" (Not really hard to play, but I love the riffs in it)

No particular order...
Metallica - Master of Puppets (the blazing fast main riff)
Pantera - Five Minutes Alone (main riff, super fuckin heavy and groovy - makes me tingle all over)
Slayer - Raining Blood (The breakdown)
Children of Bodom - Children of Bodom (the breakdown with the kickass keyboard solo)
Lamb of God - The Faded Line (1:48, they have crazier riffs than this by fuckin far, but I just love the feel of it)
