oh, well im doing a neck through

Because it's much safer to use a router with a bearing on the bit, to route round a template, rather than do it freehand It took me 3 attempts to get the neck pocket template correct, but i'd rather do that than mess up the pocket to start with

but who sayd that not using templates means doing it freehand

i guide my router against a straightedge, and i get perfect fit neckpockets, in the same time i would rpobaly need to make a proper template for a neckblank, also means i wont have to make a template for every neck thats slightly different that the other.

Yea, well i still prefer to use a template, i tried to do it with a straight edge, but i didn't feel it was right
The neck itself i'll be using a straight edge for, but the heel i'll probably do a template for, just to be safe

Any tips you can give me for making a volute on the back of the neck?

uhm, just draw the shape on the side of the neck and cut it out with a bandsaw. might take a look at some guitar with a volute in real life, to see where it starts and ends etc.

Great progress you're making there man, I'd love to make my own if I had money, gear and space, can't wait to see the finished product!

Maybe a stupid question, what's a "volute"?

Sweet dude, is always a good feeling when you get new parts in

An update for me:

Neck is nearly done- shaping is 95% complete, just the fretting to do (and drill tuner holes).
Had an accident with the body, but it shouldn't be too bad when i've reparied it. I've still got to route the pickup cavity (only going for one, no controls either!), and the string throughs. The heel still needs to be shaped to the correct size, but i'll do that after i've drilled the neck anchor screw holes

Not too far for me to go either

Trying to come up with a cool bodyshape for my next project, which shall remain under wraps for a bit until i've got it under way

i finished 2 guitars i was working on both are sold.

specs

telecaster nr 3

zebrano body
1 piece maple neck
suhr vintage tele pickups
ebony/maple/ebony binding around body and headstock
pearl inlay

i sold this guitar before it was even finished, i just put it together unfinished to try it out and i sold it almost right away. its finished in the pics, nvm the fingerprints all over the body

telecaster nr 4

limba body
mapleneck/ birdseye fretboard
2 p90 pickups
turtoise pickguard and binding
pearl inlay

i build this for a guy i work with (he runs the store sumtimes... hes not the owner), he had a custom build tele that didnt sound good, but he liked the neck and the hardware, so he asked me to build him a nice body after his specificatrions with the parts and neck from his old tele.

the pics arent to good, the bindings look weird to me, like their make from small pieces or sumtin, kinda weird

thnx man, its a bitch to do tight inlays in maple, everytiny bit youll have to fill will show so it has to be perfect.

what wood are those fretboards?? the middle board looks like macassar ebony to me.

Correct, Macassar Ebony in the middle- it'll be used on the next guitar Leopardwood to the left, and Cocobolo to the right. I think the Cocobolo will go on a 6 string guitar, and the leopardwood on a bass of some description.

Fretboard slotted! The fret dots aren't drilled yet, just there to show where they'll go, but i'll probably install them tomorrow.

Another shot. The slotting went pretty smoothly, but there were a couple of chip-outs on the treble side, but i'll get that sorted

Well, it's been a goddamn long time since my last update, but the light at the end of the tunnel is near!

The guitar is fretted (they need dressing still), and the only thing left to do is apply the oil finish, and install the hardware It's taken nearly a year, but there have been periods of weeks/months where i haven't been able to do any, so it could have been done much quicker.

Pictures here. The guitar was 'strung' with some random multi-coloured wire i had hanging around, and the nut hasn't been cut yet, so the string spacing is out, but you get the general idea
