Views on Children Of Bodom?
What are your views on Bodom?
I just wondering if you lot at metaltabs.com think what I think of them...
They are definitely my favourite band, I just think there fucking amazing. I mean every song is like my best song. Alexi Laiho, great soloist, they sound great.. and his rhythm is great... the other guitarist (name alex i think), is pretty damn fucking good... the keyboard dude lol, is amazing... the drummer has loads of great double bass etc., they are just great.
Do you tihnk the same as me? or dont you? if you dont then why etc?
Just a random topic

Prolly there is another thread about this, but bodom deserves another.
Yeah, Alexi is amazing, the accuracy of his sweeps blows my mind.

I can't stand them. Song titles and lyrics are sometimes a big thing for me, and CoB's are really, really, atrocious. I only have HCDR so I may be partially talking out of my ass.

Alexi has good technical skills, but CoB are shite. My friend lent me all their albums on an mp3, and not one song was above average.

.... Why do newbs have to be so god damned stupid?
COB are decent.... great solos, decent rhythm guitar, non-existant bass, and below average drums. Vocals are terrible. Like pandemonium said, i only own HCDR so i, too, may just be talking out of my ass.

well, while listening to HCDR i dont even hear any bass, which is what i was talking about. they put him too low in the mix. i barely heard him live either.
i agree that he can play double bass very well, and he may be a very skilled drummer, but its all very simple in their songs.
Again, i tell you, i've only heard HCDR.

the lead playing is top-notch, but the rest is cheesy, especially the keyboards.
i do like his vocals, because i can actually sing along and almost get his sound spot-on.
but overall, the guitar playing is excellent, the keyboard, while cheesy, is well played, and i love the way the keys and guitars intermingle, i cant hear shit for bass, the drums are decent, and the lyrics are shit.

Thats the problem.. on HCDR Alexi changed his tone from his classic 80's metal tone (ALOT of treble) to a more ear pleasing tone... but they didnt do anythign about the bass. On the previous albums you cna hear the bassist fine.

I dig 'em.
Overall, good band, but the lyrics suck ass. Then again, he improvises alot. Plus, you've got to give him credit fo singign and playing the way he does at the same time.

Classic 80's? I don't think that tone sounds anything like classic 80's. And yeah, on HCDR the guitar tone sounded like....I don't really know how to say it but like cheaper and more fake sounding. It lost some of that really hi-gain chunky sound on like FTR.

By 80's I mean... Shrill, thin and treble set on 10 bass on 0
Just too bright.. like most cock rock bands.

I heard some of their stuff. I like it, I don't love it, but I like it. Alex is a awesome guitarist and their music is pretty damn desent, but the vocals don't do anything for me. They remind me of In Flames.

Yeah, In Flames vocalist has a lower voice and he's like screaming more. On HCDR I'd say Sixpounder has the most noticeable bass stuff.

boooooo
I heard Follow the Reaper, and it was boring me. I heard Hatebreeder, not bad. HCDR pissed me off, too damned overrated, everyone at my school found something heavier than slipknot, so now theyre butchering that up inot thin slices. I heard Bodoms cover of Mass Hypnosis by Sepultura, the keyboard solo substituting the guitar solo was uncalled for.

there all great musicians, and alexi means for most of his stuff to be cheesy, mostly HCDR, he admits its like a b-Horror film. Hatebreeder is there best album hands down, then FTR. Hatebreeder has a nice classical sound to it, and the bass kicks ass on it to.

COB is a great intro to "underground" metal. Ive gotten my friends hooked and they ventured into dark realms.

Yeah each one of their albums has a different style to it. They're about the only band I like that I can say I like ALL their albums. Something Wild has a lot of classical influence, and it's probably their most heavy, brutal album, and they play longer more progressive-like stuff and not as catchy stuff as their later work. Hatebreeder lost some of that heaviness and went to a more darker sound with more leads w/ guitar and keyboard, classical is still there. FTR went back to some of that heaviness and they went even more melodic and went even crazier with the leads but they lost the classical stuff. HCDR, when I first heard it, I didn't like it, but after listening to the songs more closely, I like that album now. In it, they've gone to a more mainstream sound and that bit of dark sound that they always had is gone and they're like whacked on speed.

Remember, I haven't heard much CoB like you. I was at my friend's and he was showing me his music on his Xbox. I remember he had a mix of nothing but In Flames and CoB, I could distinguish who was which but I think the'yre both in the same boat.

People say the lyrics suck and I agree, but it almost doesn't even matter when you can't understand one word he's saying. And some guys say the vocals suck but then there's helluva lot of other bands that sing like that too, so I mean, it's not like they're the only ones that have that throat splitting/screeching growls.

yeah, just partially. cause HCDR is the worst, IMO. But the song titles are always cheap. Hatebreeder and FtR are 10 better songwise though. If you even like HCDR a little you should hear either of the other two i just mentioned cause they kill HCDR.
As for my views overall. I like them. I used to like them more though. Actually i used to more like FUCKING LOVE THEM, then i calmed down . The first song i heard amazed me, it was the original version of the song "children of bodom", which beats the hell out of the other version, IMO. I still like them a lot, just not as much. But, Kissing the Shadows is still on of the best songs ive ever heard, and my favorite of all theirs.

What do you guys think about their new TL&S single? They're definately going towards the HCDR style now. An AWK cover? What are you thinking?

yep, power/speed with black vocals. hmm, i can stand them some of the time, but mostly their guitar riffs are too bouncy and happy and the keyboard gets annoying. not to mention they are one of the most accessible bands today, some of their stuff is utter mallcore shit. but like i said, sometimes they are quite good, i just have to be in the mood.

Meh, they're friends with that band. Just because they covered it doesn't mean that they want to be like Andrew W.K. Lots of covers are just for shits.

Well I didn't mean it like they want to be like AWK it's just like COB doing AWK....just doesn't work, cuz that cover song sounds horrible. It's kinda like saying, Slayer doing a SUM41 song or something. And I'm saying this considering that COB has done awesome covers.

I know, that's why I said that, I laughed hard when I saw that video. I think COB's best covers are Aces High, Shot in the Dark, Somebody put Something in my Drink, Bed of Nails is pretty good.

CoB are a band that is almost destined to go mainstream, but I wouldn't mind because it would bring skilled guitar playing back to mainstream. I like their bassist, he isn't anything great and he writes constipated lyrics, but I like him nontheless. The drummer is alright, seems to be another endurance drummer. The keyboardist...this is cool. When it doesn't get annoying. The dual guitar/keyboard melodies are fun to hear. HCDR is by far their worst album. But, because they are slipping into mainstream, I suppose it only gets worse from there. Some note worthy songs include Every Time I Die, Sixpounder, Bodom Beach Terror, Hate Me!, Angels Don't Kill, Needled 24/7 (but I'm sick of it) and their cover of The Final Countdown...thats just funny.

I don't know, maybe they did, but when I heard that song after dl it from kazaa, it sounded nothing like COB. It might be, but I doubt they did, because it's like the "Trooper" cover that you can dl on kazaa that Sentenced did, but some idiot put that it was by COB, so a lot of times people say that they like the Trooper cover by COB, even though they didn't do it.

No, I do actually make fun of all those bands, but I have no problem if anyone listens to it. It's just where I live, that's like all everyone listens to. It's either pop, rap, and all that shit, and here when it comes to like rock type stuff, it's like hardcore/metalcore/etc. Nothing against the listeners, I just can't stand that stuff, and hey a lotta guys bitch at my music so.........yeah.

bahh, bahh.
a. it came from the fact that you really have no importance on this sight other than to bitch, whine and harass newbs. this is not always a bad thing, but i've seen the way you pointlessly start shit with people like bia, lordofstorms, silent night, rabbitfoodslicer among other people. it really cracks the fucking shits out of me, and where were you when we needed you the most, with korn dude? and i don't go looking to pointlessly bitch at people, unlike you, i don't do that i simply speak up when they are doing something i don't like, which you do in spades.
b. well then put a smilie. granted, it's hard to communicate with 100% accuracy since we can't see each others facial expressions, which is why the nomadic one invented smilies. and 99% of people would agree that merely saying "smoke a cock faggot" without anything else, is not the least bit jokingly or humourous. if you want to make a joke, go ahead but put or after it. i'd leave it there but since you used your 7th grade insults, i will respond with take your black dahlia murder and children of bodom and shove it half a metre up your fuckhole.

i agree, i have argued a lot lately, but that hasnt always been the case. Nothing more i can say there, because you are entirely correct. However, i do help out on this forum. It may be few and far between, but i've helped out in the gear and guitar forums a good few times.
I find the term "smoke a cock" to be incredibly humorous, with a joking conotation. 'Tis why i used it.

alright, fair enough, i basically don't go to the gear forum so i suppose i missed that. your newb starting still shits me but, ah well, and i did overreact plenty yesterday i'd just had a shit day so.
and i'll try and keep that that's humourous, in mind. nothing more to say on the matter, so i'll say something else:
1. i agree with fatdanny with the cheesiness of it all
2. children of bodom are a very, very accessible metal band.
3. anything they do or stand for, terror 2000 does it 100 times better.
that's my two cents worth and there's an end to it, so i'll let you people go back to discussing the band.

For those of you that have seen the Everytime I die at Tuska on their DVD. Do any of you guys know how to do that last bit of the solo that he does different from the studio version? I think I can figure it out, except for that sweep he does.

well i recently downloaded their latest enstallment HCDR, and i must say that i almost felt embarassed for them. i can see why some might see cob as chesey from just looking at the names of those songs. But other than that, imo, i think everything else just kicks some ass.

Children of Bodom
Ok so yeah, I'm not sure if I'm in the wrong area of the forum to ask this, but I'll give it a shot anyways...
I was listening to "Kissing the Shadows" By Children Of Bodom (Fucking INCREDIBLE song) and I love the keyboard parts at 0:57 and 2:20. The keyboard patch is a VERY beautiful sound, it sounds very classical and medieval, the kind of sound that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Anyways, I was wondering if this keyboard patch was actually modeled from a real instrument, my friend told me it might be a Glockenspiel, but I listened to some sound clips of a Glockenspiel and it didn't sound anything like the keyboard patch on the COB song. So...enough of my bantering, I was wondering if anybody knows what this instrument is....can anybody tell by listening to it? I'd really love to know. I have posted a sound file in MP3 format of the 2 parts I am talking about (I had to ZIP it too) so if anybody could have a listen and get back to me on that it would be greatly appreciated.
(Hope the sound clip is good enough to give you a good idea)
Thank you in advance
~Nick

that is a mix of two settings. Warman plays only synth (in here) i believe. one of those sounds you hear is harpsichord, popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. the other is just one of many that sound that way. could be a string which could even be edited by him. or just a similar setting. anyway, im sure you were searching for HARPSICHORD.
EDIT: also, this is my favorite CoB song, ever.

Yep, thats it....I downloaded a few sound clips of a Harpsichord and thats the one, beautiful sounding instrument isn't it? Thanks mate
and yes, this is a great CoB song...the top 3 Bodom songs in my opinion are Kissing the Shadows, Mask of Sanity, and Sixpounder. Warman is an awesome keyboard player, seems to be so much talent in Scandinavia eh? Anyways I gotta be up in four hours so I'll fuck off now lol....thanks again mate, have a good one.
Cheers
~Nick

no problem. you see, one of the advantages of being a keyboard player is, you get to learn the names and sounds of a lot of instruments
and yes, harpsichord has a wonderful sound. id use the setting more if my keyboard contained a more authentic sounding version of it. but i usually just stick to piano for a hard hitting, bright sound.
this made me want to hear FtR for the first time in 2 months! so i just put it on.

Children of Bodom
Well, they finally have a new song up. I actually like it. It kind of has an "Are You Dead Yet?" feel, but it isn't bad. One part shortly after the vocals kick in is kinda gay, but overall it is a HUGE improvement. No more classical sounding stuff, which is sad...but the melody line is still really cool.
