Thankyou for bringing that up. Just cause he can sing and play at the same time doesnt make him good.
1. Jaco Pastorius.
2. les Claypool
3. Ryan Martinie
4. Abraham Laboriel
5. Martin?..from Opeth.
Maybe not the best...but they influenced me the most. (Those are in no particular order, bar Jaco at the top.)

I think I was the only one who chose Tony Choy. Anyways, he's an excellent bassist, if anyone doesn't remember he was in Atheist during the "Elements" era. Some of the riffs on "Water" are amzing and some of the riffs at the begining of "Green" were great too.

Of course, Les Claypool gets tops from most people, and I agree. But I'd also say that the bassist from Mortician must recieve recognition. Any guy who would waste his time playing a bass so low and distorted that it is literally just constant fuzz, desrves an award for having big--although pointless--balls. Why not just give him a microphone and have him blow into it? The world may never know, but it's still funny to hear.

My Favorite Bassists
The only bassists that really impress me are Jaco Pastorius, Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten, Sean Malone, Tony Choy (Pestilence, Atheist), Troy Tiptun's hammering style (Zero Hour, Death Machine), and most of all Tuomo Mikael Hohtari (Cause for effect, fast fusion). In every other band, all I really care about are the riffs (exceptions for me are Burning Inside, Cryptopsy, Lykathe, Berzerker where the drumming is paramount but eh). I haven't heard many bands where the bass playing is the key element and is really good. If anyone has any recommendations of good bass players similar to any I have mentioned, let me know.

The necrophagist bassist is good i have to agree! he does a lot of tapping! although.. he does get lost in the mix an awful lot.. that being, his tone is way too trebley.

Thanks for responding, I figured this chat was long past obsolete. Anyways, I have every Martyr CD (only 2) and the fact that you can even hear the bass playing at times is comforting (even though the drumming on the Hopeless Hopes cd is horrendous, it's probably because I'm so used to listening to Burning Inside), but doesn't give me much else to work with. I've heard almost all of Death's stuff. The Death stuff is pretty good, but it doesn't impress me as much as any of the things I mentioned above. I see you like Steve DiGiorgio a lot. He's played with so many bands, it's pretty amazing. I listen to Necrophagist obviously only for muhammed. Anyone who does otherwise was probably sodomized in kindergarten by a corrupt day care counselor. If you get the chance, check out Cause for Effect http://listen.to/cfe , Aghora, Gordian Knot, or Zero Hour/Death Machine (even though you probably already have, and don't care.) I've set a pretty high standard for bass playing in what I'll listen to, so eh. I've heard a couple of Quo Vadis and Carcariass songs where the bass playing particularly impressed me, but that's about it. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, when i watched the dream theater dvd ''scenes of new york:2000'' or something.. i got a big urge to play a 6 string bass, so i went to my local music shop and tryed one... did not like it at all.. the neck was so huge and wide and so uncomfortable, and the string spacing was so close it was like trying to play bass on a guitar..

My local shop doesn't have a six string to play. I was gonna buy a six string some time ago, but I settled for a five because six string's neck looks huge. But nonthelesss John Myung rules.

Steve DiGiorgio is my hero (and the reason i play fretless), but i'm also quite keen on Eric Langlois, Alex Webster, Sean Malone, Vortex and Tyr from Borknagar. On the non-metal front, i'd go with Geezer Butler, John Entwhistle, Jaco, Jack Bruce and Tony Levin.

That guy was like my main influence to start playing, I don't really listen to his stuff anymore but he is still a great bassist for what band he's playing in.

Fieldy does suck, he sort of has unique style.. but all he's doing is putting his bass in drop A and whacking his hands against the fretboard/strings, nothing special, IMO, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion..

I'm sure we're missing tons.
I can think of two but I don't know their names. That would be whoever plays in Symphony X and whoever is in Andromeda. With really progressive bands like that, it goes without say that all of their members are insane musicians.
I just thought of another one. A few weeks ago I went to see Quo Vadis live. Obviously DiGorgio was not there, I don't know if he tours with any of the bands he records with, he's mostly a session bassist. But the guy they had was awesome. He actually played for two bands that night, the other band (also from Québec) is called Augury. Surprisingly, I like Augury more. They were very technical and very talented. Some parts involved two handed tapping on both guitars and the bass all at the same time. It was truly amazed. The bass player played a six string too ... and had tapping parts in most of the songs. Seeing someone that good makes me feel like I really suck ...

Not sure if I just missed it, but what about Jeff Berlin? His song "Joe Frasier" with Bill Bruford (drums) is simply a must for all bassists to listen to. (and if ANYONE can find the tabs to this, I'll get my drummer to give you head!!!!)
Rattlehead, the bassist you mentioned (Augury) is Dominic "Forest" Lapointe. We just played a show with them and Martyr last weekend in Toronto. Another bassist of mention would be Francois Mongraine from Martyr. On that note, it was amazing to play a show where the last 4 bands all played a 6-string bass! What a treat for me, as I never get to see what it looks like from the crowds' point of view! Augury is an amazing band, and Forest has one song where he taps the entire tune. Simply awe-inspiring.
Cheers.

There's no favorites for me..obviously heavy influenced players but no favorites...any innovative, awesome tone, finger(3-4 preferably) style are usually my favorites for death metal.

Nobody else really stands out in my mind. Then again, I'm not a bassist, and really don't appreciate the instrument like a bassist would.
