falkenbach rocks my fuckin socks. they might be my favorite band, at the moment.
drudkh/astrofaes both have a lot of folk influence, but they are primarily black metal. GOOD FUCKIN STUFF!

Finntroll also, their first album is amazing.
Mithotyn and Moonsorrow rule. Sorry for mentioning bands already said..
I like to go to metal-archives.com and just look through all the Folk and Viking Metal bands. You'll find a bunch of good ones.

Empyrium, their earlier stuff is fantastic.
Uaral are fucking good, only one album as far as i know but its amazing.
Månegarm are awesome quite surprised no ones mentioned (sorry if someone has )
Magog (Britsh one, now changed their name, Sqol knows what too) are cool

ah, but dont get me wrong, i didnt say Nightwish was "viking". there is a fine line to be drawn when a band has folk, but nothing concerning vikings. Seeing as how Nightwish has lots of folk, and this thread topic didnt mention "viking", sure they can be included.
thats the way i do it, if they dont mention vikings but have folk... simply folk metal. so often it is put viking/folk, for many bands, but of coarse this doesnt work for, say, Amon Amarth, which has no folk at all. |

i just got an album by fjoergyn, the album cover was what struck me. pretty cool, look them up. theyre not really folk metal but its all in german and seems kind of folky. actually ive never really heard anything like this

yeah, Cadacross are great, but i heard they split, could be false. there are probably a number we havnt mentioned, one reason being, i didnt use my collection last time i posted, so those were off the top of my head. I hated leaving the ones out that were already posted here, simply because i care about it a lot. HAH!
Mithotyn are still my favorite viking/folk band, but having dvds, and albums to look forward to from Ancient Rites and Ensiferum, tests that favoritism.
I know Wintersun was mentioned here, but to be honest, i dont hear a folk approach in there much at all. there are parts that are, arguably, folk. but im not sure id call it folk. sounds more like an extreme power metal act to me. and im pretty sure he wasnt going for a folk sound, after reading the interviews ive read. what do you guys say about that? |

I think they are definitely more of a Melodic Death/Folk Metal band more than anything else. Having just listened to them I can definitely pick out some folk elements(well, more faster ensiferum sounding)..but not much.
Ensiferum are kick ass. Thanks Trey for getting me into them.
I've been looking up mainly folk metal for over an hour and I've realized I want at least $500 to spend on albums/shirts.
Edit - Cadacross are still making their new site...where did you hear of a supposed break up?

Yea, Cadacross is fucking amazing. They haven't done anything for few years, but I don't think they've quit. But it's possible since Georg Laakso was in that accident and he is playing guitar in Cadacross.
