Melodic Black Metal
Ok, none of this "raw gr1m" shit..and other than COF and DB(which I don't really care for, but that is my business), what are your favourite melodic black metal bands? I want to get more into the genre, so please help one another out.
Shade Empire(more so their first cd, it's amazing)
Twilight Opera(more so their last cd)
Blinded By Faith
Catamenia
Mourn In Silence(except I think you have to email the band to get their cds)
I think I just enjoy powerful sounding keyboards sometimes with metal, they just can add so much more substance.
And there are so many bands I find that are similar to this genre..L3T D@ F/\5 I]@N{3 83G1N!!

I wish other bands came up with names that were just as fun to pronounce.

Would Mystic Forest qualify as melodic black metal? I have heard one song by them and thought it was very good.

Never heard of Mystic Forest, I'm trying to find some mp3's online.
I was never a big fan of OMC, I guess I'm looking for more of a symphonic black metal band.
Nonetheless, thanks guys for the replies.

Arcturus [especially old]
Limbonic Art
Tartaros
Dodheimsgard [Satanic Art EP & 666 International]
Hecate Enthroned [2nd album]
Mysticum
older Satyricon
of course, Emperor
There are plenty of other excellent melodic/symphonic BM bands I really dig but I can't remember them all right now.

True Xasthur is raw, but it's as melodic as i get.
He is pretty boring most of the time. But when something is good it's really good.

Kovenant? Would they be considered melodic black metal?
I don't know the difference between all the black metal sub-genres.

There's a Nagelfar and a Naglfar. Moe blunts was just saying Nagelfar is better.

which is either apathetic or depressed. i suggest headphones and a cup of coffee for that particular album. also, telepathic and bloodstained mirrors are 2 great fuckin albums.
i've started gettin more into drone metal, and that is liek the minimum of minimal music (how is that for alliteration, bitches). helps to be drunk.

Ok thanks, I'll have to check them out.
Catamenia's new album was leaked yesterday, "Location : COLD". I don't wanna download it though, just because I'm going to be "celibant" until I buy the album.
I LOVE Catamenia, anyone else a fan?

Went HUGE into melodic death metal, then folk/viking, now in my melodic bm phase...I'M LIKE A DISHWASHER CYCLE.

Vesperian Sorrow are a local band....saw them live....weren't that impressive. I really didn't like the fact that they pre-recorded all the keyboard parts. They left no room whatsoever for improvising.
As far as other bands, Grand Belial's Key is fucking great. It is melodic without sounding cheesy. Plus, they hate jews. Too bad the lead singer just passed away. RIP. Bass, check out their album called Kosherat.

I seen these guys a couple months back in a lil pub in my town. The younger guitarist is amazingly good! His sweeps are some of the cleanest I've ever seen live.
As for melodic black metal... I'm thinking Wintersun is about all I know. Any other bands as melodic and catchy as Wintersun? Bands like Kalmah? I love the immense melodic content.

Check out Eternal Tears of Sorrow...it actually has some ex-members of Kalmah in it.
http://www.myspace.com/etos1
The songs they have on myspace don't really give them much justice..I only own Before the Bleeding Sun and Chaotic Beauty..but both are very excellent albums.
Now, let's stick to melodic black metal.

Here's a band I recently stumbled upon...The Funeral Pyre.
www.myspace.com/thefuneralpyre
http://www.thefuneralpyre.com
Both of their albums are being ordered, but I forgot about this Xmas delay.
Galy Records is having some specials going on which it nice having to pay $7-10cdn for albums instead of $12cdn. They also have all three Vesperian Sorrow albums.

Limbonic Art is my favorite symphonic black metal band. The one album that was by far the greatest was In Abhorrence Dementia. The keyboards are amazing, but the guitars are a bit masked underneath them. I would highly recommend this. Also, Dimmu Borgir is actuall pretty good, if not great. I am more of a true black fanatic, but they are really great and I do not understand why they get so much shit. Get enthrone Darkness Triumphant by them.

For Limbonic Art, try Moon in the Scorpio.
For Dimmu, Stormblast/For all Tid.
I've been getting into Rex Mundi recently. Full of melodic riffs with fantastic production comparable to that of LLN. I really enjoy it.

Yeah, I would agree with that too. Moon in the Scorpio was excellent. Also For All Tid and Stormbast are my two favorite albums by Dimmu. I was just saying the two I mentioned because this fellow seems to be looking on the more flowing melodic side.

Headphones are a big help, or at least being by youself. It's not the kind of shit you throw on when you have a house full of revellers.

EDT is my favorite dimmu, by far. but isnt it great that dimmu has that variety! sure other bands have a variety over time, but it just caught my attention how you recommended EDT to Bass', for melody, even though its not your favorite. people usually just tend to recommend their favorite, rather than the more appropriate choice for a topic.

I like EDT too, and I think it has great melody and everything. I thought it all worked on the album. Well, after the original keyboardist left, I didn't care for them at all anymore (i don't remember why) and I didn't listen to Dimmu for maybe a year or so. But then I started listening to them again and even their new stuff is starting to grow on me, and I too agree that they have great variety. What is interesting is how some people say they are too sold out now, but really, no Dimmu album really repeated itself much, so how has money effected their sound?

Any band that manages to get out of their garage is a sellout to black metal purists.

yeah, i think, in this case, perhaps the sound chang was simply change of interest and ideas in the band members, and not just someone saying "they sold out" just because they dont like the new style... and the fact that they make more money now. which brings me to something. a band, of this status, is obviously making more money after such a long time due to how well they are known. it doesnt make much sense to say that a band sold out, simply because they are popular (through time!) and now sound different. look at Kalmah. the singer did a different vocal for the whole Black Waltz album, rather than the one on the first 3. is it that they sold out? fuck no. it was a choice drivin by the interest of the singer. or possibly even an involuntary change in his voice, in which case, still has nothing to do with money. i have never heard someone say Kalmah has sold out, but it is just an example of change. something i do think could constitute selling out would be purposely changing to make money, no matter how the artist feels about the material, in other words, has stopped caring about the thing that kept them at it through the beginning, passion. and like what you were getting at about dimmu, they didnt know if upcoming releases were going to make more money than previous. in fact, i hear most people bash Death-cult, and i dont like it myself. they people i hear say that are not saying it because they think they sold out, they say it because they simply dont like the music. if they had made another Puritannical, wouldnt that be more like selling out... repeating something that made a lot of money, to make a lot more money. shit, ok, im fuckin tired

It's a case where they already had a massive fan base and legacy which centered on more dark and brutal elements, and Prometheus was highly progressive sounding which alienated alot of people. It's not my favorite album but I really like it.

Eh, not really. Blood Red Bass was entirely joking. It's pretty amazing how well you can even read the subtle ideas of people on here..I guess you just have to waste almost 4 years of your life on Metaltabs.

Speaking of Black Metal and myself, CHECK THIS OUT:
Insane Devotion - entire album available for download on their website, free! The drums are programmed ( ) but the songs are pretty cool. Screeches, satan, and plenty of melody coming from both the guitar and keyboards. The band is from Brazil. The first song is called "Child Rape"

Aww, sorry. I'll put a pic up maybe. Also, I agree that a whole FREE album is kind of pointless unless this is their first one and they are just trying to get people into the sound. Otherwise, who would pay for the album if it's free somewhere?

Yeah, I forgot to take out the "everything's free somewhere" part.
Well, I guess this is true because no money=no band. But sometimes it's worth buying a release and sometimes it's not. Like, I'd rather download something from a new band that I'm just getting into or new to than buy it for full price, in case it sucks. If I know a band and am a complete fan, I'd definately buy it just because I love them.

Oh, wow! They have a pretty good singer and plus they have great exotic names! Most black metal names come from mythology and bibles and shit (which I get tired of after a while).

to my understanding, raw black metal fans love it to sound bad. not that these guys sounded raw, other than the guitar tone.
EDIT, haha, im listening to bad guitars right now. nokturnal mortum-goat horns. but with keyboards like these on here, i dont care about the guitar at all. the band above, didnt have very good keyboard. if they did, i still wouldnt like the vocals or drums. though im not usually picky about drums, its just another negative portion here.

Yeah, it was once, and in some occasions still is a trend to have terrible production and shitty music to be a "true" black metal band. Haha, I'd have to thank Mayhem for that with the Pure Fucking Armageddon demo. It's so bad, I laugh

I think that's attributable to the fact that Mayhem were kids then.

Yes, they were like 15 when they recorded it, but they very well to this day brag about how bad the production is in a laughing/comical way. But a few people I could mention (but won't) took this really seriously and only considered bad production to be "true black metal". Hehe, but the funny thing is, half of those people who made up rules weren't even in black metal bands.

i'll take that as a "no"...
anyway, have any of you heard Gehenna's "malice"? it sounds great, but after that, they turned very boring, imo. they went from melodic and symphonic to raw and boring, in your face CRAP.
