Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness. The first album I owned which I considered to be real death metal. I already owned Scream Bloody Gore before this but I'd never considered it to be anything really new. Despite it not being the best MA album, it opened my eyes to death metal.
Nile - Festivals of Atonement / Cryptopsy - None So Vile. I got these 2 albums at the same time, and were the most brutal things I'd ever heard. Started my long love for both bands, and dragged me further into the brutality of death metal.
Death - Human. The definitive Death album. This is one of my all time favourite albums and is without a doubt Chuck's best work.
Opeth - Orchid / Edge of Sanity - Crimson. I got these two around the same time too, and completely changed the way I thought about death metal. I really didn't think it could be so melodic, and never would have thought acoustic guitars could have been implimented in that way.
Opeth - Morningrise. Basically everything that Orchid did for me, multiplied by 19.
Megadeth - Rust in Peace / Slayer - Reign in Blood / Metallica - Master of Puppets / Kreator - Extreme Aggression. Need I ask why for any of these.

Fucking
Extol - Undeceived
Into Eternity - Self title, and Dead or Dreaming
They get me through another world talking about vocals, passing by growls to clean voices, and the feeling on the lyrics plus the awesome music.
They changed my vision about metal, again, because the vocals' voice/growls

Metallica - Kill Em All
I remember popping in this cd at my Uncles, while "Hit the Lights" was blasting I was reading through the lyrics and kept seeing "(Guitar Solo) everywhere, this got me VERY excited and then I eventually made it to track 5 and I was completely blown away by this odd thing called a Bass Solo. It was my first experience to Metal and the technical awe that it is.
Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
I remember listening to the open track "The Hellion" and feeling like I was preparing for an Olympic event, and the second "Electric Eye" began I knew that this indeed was an Olympic event, in Metal. The cd never let up, just kept kicking my ass with the technical proficiency of Glen and K.K. and the catchy chorus' of Rob Halford, I've NEVER heard anyone sign like that man and still haven't.
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
When I first picked out this album from my uncle's collection of Pantera CDs, I had no idea what I was about to hear. From the first song "Strength Beyond Strength" I was bombarded with the most powerful drums I have ever heard, this wall of guitar that blew my face off, and this powerful scream. When the second track started I heard the weirdest shit ever, this squeal.. I loved it, The mix of innovated guitar work and simply amazing drums completely changed my life. For now on I knew what I wanted to hear and I wanted to heard PANTERA. The songs remained heavy and technical, yet extremely catchy, Dimebags solo's were mind boggling and inspired me to pick up the guitar. The CD closed with Planet Caravan, a Sabbath cover.. which was the perfect way to end this masterpiece, paying homage to the one that started it all.
Cacophony - Go Off!
This cd introduced me to a new level of guitar playing, behind the horrid singing and the cheesy lyrics was this amazing guitar work of Jason Becker and Marty Friedman. Unlike other shredders Becker and Friedman played from their heart, tracks like "Floating World" and "Images" said so much. I still get a lump in my throat when I listen to this cd.. I touches me in so many ways, and is a constant inspiration.
Carcass - Heartwork
I stayed away from this band for awhile due to their previous releases; poorly produced, generic grindcore. Then my friend came by with their newest cd "Heartwork" he kept insisting that I listen to it, but I really didn't feel like sitting through a whole album of shitty grindcore that sounded like it was recorded on a answering machine. I finally agreed to give it a listen and was completely blown away. I kept wondering was this the same Carcass?? It cant be.. This has so much melody, the guitar tone was amazing and the production couldn't be beat. I really cant put into words how I feel about this cd, Its so beautiful the solo's fit the songs perfectly. In my opinion no band will ever top this cd.

I used to listen to west coast rap all the time, and i still do listen to it but my friend kept going on about Killlswitch Engage before they were popular so i asked him to give me some songs to download. So about a week later i was in a CD shop with him and some others and noticed that the album Alive Or Just Breathing was 1/2 price so i bought it. Since then ive go in to heavier stuff via the net.
One day i had went to a small indie record shop and was planning to buying De Mysteriis... but it was sold out so i looked around the shelf trying to find some other BM band then i saw Stormblĺst by Dimmu so i bought that. I thought i was amazingly kvlt because it was sung in norwegian and there was a corpsepainted guy on the back.
Next time i went to the shop it was just as stupid i spent more time looking through the racks again i found Sons of Northern Darkness(Immortal) and i wasnt sure if they were real BM or it was a gimick band because it looked so set up compared to the forest pic inside SB, i think that day i also bought Anthems to the welkin.

Right on, an Into Eternity fan. Have you heard Buried into Oblivion as well?
Hmm...albums that changed my life. I'll give it my best shot.
Death- The Sound of Perseverance
Last year in May when I was first in to death metal, I had a bunch of money from my birthday. I spent this couple hundred dollars on a bunch of metal cd's and this one happened to be one of them. At first I couldn't really get into it, but after a while it just kept growing on me. I still listen to it constantly.
Black Dahlia Murder- Unhallowed
Another one of my first cd's, this one was a favorite right off the bat. I just loved the constant brutality and memorable songwriting.
Into Eternity- Buried Into Oblivion
I met the (former) drummer of Into Eternity at a family reunion last summer. He told me about his band after we jammed. He recommended this cd to me, so I picked it up on the same vacation. It is something i've never heard before. The mix of musical/vocal styles blew me away.
Cacophony- Speed Metal Symphony
Another one of the first metal cd's I own. With wickedly catchy songs and mind blowing solos, this cd probably changed my life the most out of the whole list. Along with the "Go Off" cd, Cacophony introduced me to solos that didn't get boring. Speed Metal Symphony is my favorite instrumental of all time. There is a part around 6:30 (I think) that brings me close to tears.

Metallica - Ride The Lightning. This was the first album i bought ever. I wasnt let down at all either, still fucking awseom today.
Slayer - South of Heaven. First time i heard slayer was off of this album at my friends hows, it was his older brothers cd. That opening riff to south of heaven killed me.
Dark Angel - Leave Scars. This album simply showed me how bad ass Thrash can get, and also hooked me to Dark Angel.
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness. I heard Damnation off of this album and fell in love with death metal.

Great album indeed. And Bill Steer grew up in the same area of Liverpool as I did (Anfield).

I guess a "band that changed your life" is quite hard to identify. After all, I have some... you know, insticnts (lol) that came from most bands I like, so they changed me in a way. But what has changed my life a lot? I'd say it's linkin park... for it is them who are the band that moved me to the "rock" lifestyle -- thus leading me to metal. I owe them one.
And Evanescence + Nightwish are bands where I've taken a poetical style from sometimes )

Kiss: Destroyer - Before this, the only music I knew was the pop stuff on the radio.
Megadeth: Risk - My first proper Metal album... confirming that my Kiss frenzy wasn't a phase I was going through.
Metallica: ...And Justice For All - Opened my eyes to longer, epic tracks.
Dream Theater: Images And Words - Made me open to everything and anything.

black sabbath - paranoid. first metal album.
at the gates - slaughter of the soul. first BR00TALZ album.
atomizer - death, mutation, disease, annihiliation. first black metal album.
opeth - morningrise. absolutely beautiful. its like taking a walk in an untouched forest with the person you love most.
dillinger escape plan - irony is a dead scene. this album reminded me that metal music is like dating a porn star: not COMPLETELY constructed of just good bits. you get shit like this pressed on cd, i may as well have just gone down to the block of units they're building down the street from me, only difference being that the construction site would be more organised.

Is it just me or does that sound like an analogy for deflowering virigns? (probably not in a nice way)
Maybe its just that im listening to GUT.
Which reminds me
GUT's full length is the greatest porn grind album of all time. Sloppy, harsh with a hint of groove, 3x vocal attack (someone who sounds constipated, uber-pitch shifted to all hell and most importantly, high pitched screaming ala. power metal), and porn samples. After listening to this album you get the same feeling as I'm told you get after getting head from a really cheap hooker - dirty as fuck, but satisfied.

That's a nice new twist to this thread worth a second post:
Kreator - Flag of Hate - I bought a used vinyl of this and when I got it home I noticed that it smelled funny. Upon further inspection I discovered some fairly fresh puke stains on it. After this I have done more thorough inspections of used albums prior to purchasing them.
Metallica - The Black Album - After buying this I realized that I could trust no one and since then I have been much more careful about buying new releases from bands that I assumed could do no wrong since I had to sell it immediately and took a $10 loss on the piece of shit.

DEP are organised much in the same way that order and intermittance arise out of chaos theory: it seems random but there is an underlying structure and method behind it.
Persevere and you shall be rewarded.

Metallica - Kill 'em All | got me into speedy thrash metal
COB - Follow The Reaper | made me realize the immense melodic fundamentals that metal can have
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power | Opened my eyes to the power groove
Slayer - Reign In Blood | Turned me from a boy to a man, found chaos
Slipknot - Slipknot | Opened me up to choppy time sigs and riff patterns, also showed me how dissonance = harmony.

Well a strange sequence of events occured that turned me towards wanting to listen to Black metal... I suppose you could say satan was out to get me.
1. The first thing, my friend sends me a link to one of those stupid things that shows you a bunch of crap about subliminal messages, and the last one is "Turn up the volume and listen to the message hidden in this Cradle of Filth track". It was the lords prayer backwards but I can barely hear it so I turn it up some more, then BAM! it was one of those fucking things where it makes you jump out of your skull because something screamed really loud accompanied by some sort of image... which I was about 3 inches from (trying to hear what the fuck was going on) Then some cradle song punched on, I was immedietly intrigued and listened to the whole thing. Twas Swoit.
2. I go to my t.v. now in the mood for more metal songs, So I turn to channel 410 which on time warner cable is the 'all the time' metal on your t.v. station and WHAT A COINCIDENCE! Cradle of filth was playing, I forget what album it was and what song but within that same week I went out and bought Midian.
...The next week I bought Damnation and a day...
a couple months later I bought Nymphetamine...
the day after I bought Nymphetamine I saw them live in clevland with arch enemy and mudvayne (aparanatly). They are definitly better live. And the day after that I forced myself to remember how to scream like a girl back in 6th grade... 20 minutes later I could do it. now I do it all the time... scream like a girl that is.
