I found it to not be too bad. A few notes of crtique.
Definately need to redo the eq all together, i mean everything needs to shifted more towards the highs mostly because it comes out muddy. I mean It sounds like it could be decient as long as there were balance of a full range on the spectrum of freqs.
Next i dont' remember off hand, but when like... mid way it switches from one... riff or whatever to another one. One you don't hear in the beginning.. (its a big switch) Its a good switch other then the fact that the music literally stops for like .5 seconds and throws the listener off, in a seemingly unpleasant and confusing way. If you could just work the timing on that change it would actually be a really good change.
Overall i enjoyed the recording other than the nit picking things i noticed.
Edit: I probably need to put this in since i didn't realize this until after i posted. I guess this is a cover of the song. I actually haven't heard the song but it sounded pretty decient.

Thanks, i know it was far from perfect, i was pretty hasty last night to finish it, as it was late and needed some sleep.
Ive just gotten a new amp (roland cube 30) less then a week ago, so im still strugging to set my EQs to something im pleased with. this recording was done with bass 6, middle 10, treble 6.
i think the obvious problems where, the timing, the tapping sounded average, the 2nd interlude didnt sound quite right, and the solo went out of tune.
thanks for criting tho.

Somehow i thought so haha. Not too bad Granted you're not gonna get the best prime sound doing it that way (obviously).
But oh well, not bad.

PFFFFF. haha i don't know who told you wrong. But thats the BEST way to record. You get somewhat accurate representations of what the sound actually sounds like, moreover some emulated sound. I have heard of people using both direct out and recording it, but i have yet to do this, and dont' really see myself trying it.
Getting a decient mic/condenser mic and a preamp teamed up with decient mic placement can do some wonders.

You must have missed the point of this in an earlier thread last week. Guitar forum is for GUITAR. Point being that if you want to have more than you're cool riffs and guitar playing judged and critqued.. i.e. recording quality, microphone use, and what not and what not, (this is clearly a GEAR oriented and music production oriented) you would come here.
Which makes perfect sense if you ask me.

Yea, well i suggest you channel your 2 guitar tracks (if thats what you got there...) left and right instead of having some muddy mono guitar sound. The drums are barely audible (turn them up) and well... thats about all there was... The filler riff was pretty "bendy" sounding and off time. keep trying, and use the tips we gave you to make some better stuff.

I thought it was a pretty decient recording. Probably could use a lil more mid on the bass drum to define it a little more. But its not a bad sounding kit.

ok cool thanks, i made the drums quieter on purpose, because they sound a bit dodgy, just being a midi file extracted from guitar pro, and ill definetly try putting guitar 1 on left, and other on right.

Track by myself (4.1MB). Recorded using my POD, through the poweramp of my Laney (tube), then into my 'custom' open backed 2x12 and recorded with an SM57 into a behringer mixer. Hasn't turned out too badly, not perfect by any means, but im quite happy with it

It didn't sound half bad, and i enjoyed it. Except every now and again the harmony wasn't doing it for me. It would sound good then i was like whoa thats just completely off key.
I'm pretty sure thats how you meant it to be, but that was to me the big down side to the song. Too much dissonance for me.

Hey I was wondering like w/ my track earlier, I had 2 guitars for the rhythm each panned like 40% to each side. On the solo part though, I had it mono to both speakers, should I split it towards one side or?

I dunno i play with the panning so much that you can do alot with either way really. Doing the mono style really isn't that bad of an idea. Granted what you could do is.. track record two different guitars doing the rhythm on both sides and having the solo in the middle. I've done this a few times. I'm actually doing this write now as i write this. But often times in the past what i'll do is.. just have about 35% on each side with one being rhythm and the other being the solo.. So it just kind of cuts through a lil better.
Bet as for yours it actually doesn't sound that bad how it is.

Yea, i could probably point the bits where the harmony is shite... i'm fixing it, just couldn't be bothered then

Here's a track I recorded for my senior project. I admit it's not too good, but I got an A on though, but maybe that shows how much effort it requires to pass highschool. As you can hear, alot of the later sections are way off time, and the vocals are far from perfect.

I did the same fucking thing haha. Although my song was about the WTO (world trade organization) and was a punk song hah. But i dunno its kind of hard for somebody else to give you a harsh grade on a style of music that they may not like.
As for you're song. I actually liked it. I'm not that big on death metal but it didn't sound half bad. Granted the guitars were an eq nightmare but everything together wasn't bad. Decient sounding drums. And the lil end slow down i will admit was pretty fucking awesome. imo
I'll have to steal that idea and maybe incorporate it somehow.
Not a death metal fan but i liked it.

Thanks dude. Yeah, the guitars were purposely EQ'ed to scoop because I didn't want my off time riffs showing up. But yeah, I had fun recording it, and thats really all that matters if school is involved.

Hi guys
I've been coming to your site for the last year or so and I have learned a lot
from u guys. From picking techniques to recording. So I think the time has come
to show off what I've learned and what I can do.
You can listen to the song here
The solo isnt very good, but that's cuz I'm not that skilled... yet!
Equipment used to record and mix:
Jackson RR3
Creative X-fi Platinum soundcard
Zoom GFX5 (yeah yeah I know)
Fruity loops for the drums (thnx vileangelofdeth for the manytone tip)
Magix Music Studio6 for all the mixing.
All Critisizm is welcome exept for lame ass comments like 'u suck' or something.

While im flaming, ive come to post a sound clip based on what u guys said last time to fix my recording quality up.
last time u guys said my sound was very muddy, and needed more treble, ive also made guitar 1, and guitar 2, sound out over different speakers. i think it sounds quite a bit improved.
could u guys give it a listen, its the Raining Blood one (i know the triplets are out of time)

I agree with what was said before. I'm not the biggest black metal guy but i actually really liked this song/recording. The hi hat was pretty annoying though. i must say. Basically sounded completely out of..... place with the entire song.
I want to hear vocals too.

Drums definately need to be a lil more defined and louder sounding. Guitars were a lil too dominate.
I dissagree with you Sythke21. I kind of liked the tone/sound of the guitars.
Song needs some bass for sure. Would smoothen the sound out quite a bit.
Not bad though.

I did a comparison between the actual slayer song tone and you'res. Not bad. Pretty key on. You definately are still lacking the higher highs. You don't need alot but you definately need some. Might be a good idea to lower the volume abit, to prevent unneeded distortion. Might want to slightly curb some of the bass freqs in a final product.
But overall i thought it was pretty solid. Not bad. What setup are you using to record?

thanks for crit im using,
ibanez 350ex with emg 81/85s and a roland cube 30.
I have problems with recording volume, the recording input volume is set almost to the lowest value in audiocity (Recording program), and my amps volume is the lowest it goes until the sound cuts off, if i make either volume knob higher, the recording volume goes off the scale and its a wall of noise, i think its to do with my pickups which are raised quite high.
Bass was on 1/4, Mid on max, treble on half.
ill try and fine tune it later tonight

Ok gotcha. So i guess you were doing a direct out thing? I've never had much luck recording using direct out hah.

Thats pretty good, i had to crank it up a bit cause the volume is low. The only thing i would recomment is to lower the hihat and raise the guitar vol a bit. its an awesome song though, have i heard this before or is it original?

I havent really posted about or really said anything about my band, but we're working on a cd which will hopefully be released this fall. Ive actually been writing these songs for over 2 years now.
But anyways, heres a quick little sample (programmed drums, i cant give out the master YET) I would like some opinions on the guitar tone, not so much the quality of the recording, since i wont be using this production sound of course. The guitar is a tiny bit sloppy, it was a long day lol.
I would also like your opinion on what genre of metal you would personally classify this into. If its possible to do without hearing the vocals.

Definately not a bad lil clip. Didn't REALLY sound like my kind of music, but it wasn't bad at all. I liked the drums in it. Off the top of my head sounds like some variant of hardcore.

I finally have put a new song up on my myspace.
Check out the song on there called Some Malicious Intent, and tell me what you think of the recording.

listening now dude, sounds pretty cool, its hard for me to pinpoint a style of music to your song. I love the end solo, only wish itd go bit longer, and im not huge fan of the vocals it sounds too much like hardcore for me . Some riffs sound awesome, some not so, love the harmonies though, drums kick arse too.

Thanks i appreciate it. Yeah there is some hardcoreesq style in it.. but not really. I really can't stand real hardcore music, its just horrible to me. I try to do a cross between.. dark tranquility / death / darkest hour. its about as best as i can do haha.
Yeah for awhile i had a hardtime pinpointing my own genre, but i think lately its probably a cross between melodic death metal and some tech death. (such as death)

i can't say exactly what this is. i just sat down with a couple riffs in mind and started recording. the other 9 minutes just kind of happened. since it was mostly bullshitting around on the guitar, i had to give it an equally bullshit title.

Hmmm.. how exactly did you record it? It sounded probably like a direct out recording.
This recording reminds me of some sort of Doom metal. What exactly are you trying to get out of posting you're music? i'm just curious

i don't know, just looking for opinions i guess. i'm actually a little proud of that riff at 2:35, considering it was probably one of the ones that just came out of nowhere. i should have used it a little more. and yeah, i basically just recorded right onto the PC and fucked around with it a little.

Not too bad. I actually liked it quite a bit. As far as the riffs go and the putting it together sounded really solid.
Onto the recording. How did you record the guitars? Definately need to eq some of the highs back, but they actually came through a lil better. With probably a better use of eq it wouldn't sound so much like static. Actually if you added a little bit in the mid bass to bass region it would help the sound of the guitars out a bit.
If you put some decient reverb on the drums it would definately sound pretty decient. The snare sounds extremely weak the way it is. But is easily fixed.
This isn't a bad song for just going along and making shit up haha. Everynow and again you can get some good shit that way.

By the way what are you doing at the begining of the song? I mean how are you making that riff? Some sort of taps or somethin?

Mostly hammer-ons, small amount of tapping and some minor palm muting on the low strings. The only thing that annoys me is my timing is slightly off in that part so im gonna redo the whole thing this weekend since i've played it over a few times now with some new ideas.
and thanks for the comments

That happens all the time with my early recordings of my songs. I end up recording my songs nearly 4 or 5 times all the way through to get what i want. By then i have played the songs so much i can do it in my sleep, which makes the timing locked on.

Its not too bad. Drums definately could be better done. Snare isn't very dominate at all like it should be. The guitars basically overshadow everything, so its not very balanced.

Sounded pretty decient i must say. Had that one riff that you posted not too long ago that i liked. That is a pretty kick ass riff (the low taps) I'd like to hear the vocals.

Well, theres no bass guitar or eq on those clips. I guess i should update then with the newer more completed versions. Thanks for the comments. Im working on some more technical type stuff for the next couple songs on the cd so youll hear those soon.

This is my band. The recordings are still pretty rough and I think I'm going to re-do the vocals on "Above The Thorns". I do the low growls and the keyboardist does the screeches. Please be gentle

I'm really not a fan of the vocals, but thats just cause i don't like that kind of vocals (although the sqreeching as you put it didn't sound too bad.), but other than that i really liked the music. Definately couldn't hear the bass drum, even though the drums were the loudest part. Definately a pretty rough recording, but gets the basic point across.
Pretty good music i must say.

I definately didn't want my vocals on that recording. At least not as dominant as that. And yea, everyone says the same thing about the bass drum. We need to go back and fix that. But thanks for thinking that it's pretty good.

I don't have a bass... Everything's recorded on my PC in my bedroom with my guitar, Korg AX1500G and Shure Beta58A using Cubase.

i didnt really like the other one but this one i really enjoyed. i wish it went on longer. bass drum or something in the drums is a little muddy sounding in the beggining though.

thanks.
its not the final drum track either. We're in between switching drummers right now so the new stuff should have a lot more dynamics for the final copy. So hard to find good metal players.
And another thing, i switched around some schtuff here for my internet, so i will have to update the address and shit. Until then the link isnt gonna work anymore. Ill re-post after with some new samples too.

The main riff in this song is pretty good. A few questions. What tuning do you play in and what kind of les paul is that? Also what kind of amp are you using? I'm thinking about either switching bridge pickups in my les paul or getting a new one because it just doesn't have the best of sounds that i'm lookin for. Mine has the burst bucker pickups in it if i'm not mistaken and doesn't give me as good of a breakup that i would like, not to mention it does this really weird fucking feedback shit WHILE i'm playing if the tone is turned all the way up, apparently EVERY gibson les paul standard limited Ed. i've ever played on any amp does it.. weird.
Oh well. I should show you sometime a music video i made for my song haha. Its definately you tube status.

haha. Sounds good man. I need somebody around here to jam out with. If not to create music just to fucking jam. I have a friend in training so eventually we can jam out. As of right now hes JUST starting so... it'll be like him playing some sort of set progression with power chords and me do like improv solo over it. Something cool like that. Hes learning maiden so.. woot. Soon i'll be back like i was throwing some half improv Trooper solo over some kick ass maiden gallop rhythms.

not bad, sort of like lamb of god tone and music, but with a bit more riff changes and stops.

Thats definately a good first post. I liked the music. Thats pretty rare too. Not bad i must say. I'd be lying if i didn't say the lack of vocals is a dissapointment. oh well.
Also the drums is somewhat overpowering. Might be a good idea to slightly dip them back a bit.
