i want some real view points as to what there is to like about it because there has to be something

I like it if I'm in the mood for it, but its not something I listen to very often. I guess if I am on a speedwhack but not in the mood for death metal I choose grind and/or all the subgenres of grind. Some good grindcore/hardcore bands to check out:
Psyopus
Sleep Terror (More like death metal with jazz fusion elements than pure grind)
Ion Dissonance (an OK listen here and there)
Dillinger Escape Plan (Some interesting stuff)
Napalm Death (they have some alright material as well, overrated, though)
Pig Destroyer (If I want to hear pure shit from my speakers)
Keep in mind a lot of the "grind" bands are becoming more and more hardcore influenced. The above stated shit is only my opinion, check it out and make your own. Maybe you just can't like grind, in the same way many of us dont like pop music.

It's totally raw, minimal simple expression. Super intense, fast, killing. That's what I like about it.

That pretty much sums it up. Obsolete, minimalistic rawness. Like having your face sandblasted for a few hours and then rubbed in salt. It's not something i'll listen to all the time, but it's a good alternative, and some (few) bands actually have some lyrical expressions and generate an atmosphere that certainly highlights minimalistic expression. It's like audio nihilism without all the bullshit. Straight to the point music.

Try Terrorizer or face death. Greatest grindcore band in existence next to Napalm Death. Goregrind, porn grind, and dumb shit like Anal Cunt is stupid and gives grind a bad name, real grind has a meaning. I like grind because it's fast, energetic, straight-forward, and fuckin raw and far more entertaining than a lot of bands that try to be super br00t3l.
I like Nasum and Rotten Sound(which are pretty much Nasum worship). But Napalm Death and Terrorizer kick the ass of just about every grindcore band out there. Terrorizer are tighter than most grind bands(they've got Pete Sandoval on drums and used to have David Vincent on bass). They recently got back together with Tony Norman on guitars and some dude from a crust punk band on bass, and they recorded a new album, it's going to kick ass.

I'd go with early Napalm Death, first 2 Carcass albums or Terrorizer World Downfall. Those albums are very grind yet have the dynamics that most later grind lacks.

terrorizer sounds intriguing, thank you for the recommendation
symphonies of sickness isnt grind, they have fully developed songs on that album. reek, however, is grind and imo unlistenable (except genital grinder)

4 letters. C. O. D. C. Circle of Dead Children are the gods of grind. Them and Napalm Death are my favorite grinders.
People like grind the same way people like Death Metal, the same way people like Black, Thrash, Gore, etc... cause its heavy.

I've always enjoyed goregrind as preferred to grindcore. It's alot more groove oriented at times and not always so straight forward. However I do love Nasum, Napalm Death, Rotten Sound and Terrorizer.
As for bands to check out I'd say General Surgery is worth a shot.
http://generalsurgery.nu/downloadpr...load.php?file=0 Song off their 2005 demo and is gonna be on their new album I believe.
Other bands I'd recommend are Last days of Humanity, Haemorrhage, Nyctophobic, NECRONY, Ahumado Granujo and Dead Infection.

There is grind out there for everyone. If you're looking for some more melody check out newer Carcass, Cephalectomy, and Lykathea Aflame. You'd probably like Cephalectomy, Tranny. Good nutty stuff. The band to take the prize is Lykathea Aflame. They're not "pure" grind but nothing is. Except me. And Sparkle Motion. But thats me too.
CODC is good, but they've got some equally poor material.

i have human harvest and like it only on account of the vocals
i love LA but they are very far from the kind of grind i am talking about. i dont think they even come close to qualifying as grind man
cephalectomy i believe i have tried and not liked (dont they have an irish theme or something?) im going to go hunt them down again though
thanks for all the replies though guys, and let it be known i was the first to get into the inevitable "thats not grind!" argument..my apologies

so its just about the speed
actually i just thought of something. rather than me list reasons why i dont like it (which i wouldnt have done in this thread anyway), i think it is the better thing to say that i dont understand it... i mean, what would you rather hear, "metal is fucking stupid and serves no purpose" or "i dont understand it". hmm, well i never thought of it that way, but i sure as hell would rather have someone tell me they didnt understand my love for synth atmosphere in metal than tell me it was just flat out gay...
so yeah, i guess i dont understand grind. BUT i love Carcass' Heartwork. more like Guitarwork . yeah, those are some insanely cool solos. havnt heard the new stuff though. i guess im just a melody addict.

I dislike stuff like Pig Destroyer too. There is no though behind what they are doing apart from the idea of making it as 'extreme' as possible.
There is other grind out there tranny that is less 'extreme' than that, but is still grind.

Oh I just read the post above mine, don't want reccomendations, just exaplainations. Well, I likePunk Grind and Thrashcre better personally but the reason why I like grind is that it's fun fast and noisey and easy. What more could you want? It's a perfect combo for having a great time, especially in band situations, and with grind, THERE ARE NO LIMITATIONS. Grind somehow has managed to break away from every law musically possible, I mean I could strum 2 chords for an hour and as long as it has shitty production and perpetual blastbeating it's grind. But it's great!

Early Mortal Decay, Dripping, Flesh grinder, Ion Dissonance (Tech grind, haha) are all great grind bands in my opinion.
Transient, seriously, if i don't like a particular genre, the last thing i'll do is to ask others to help me enjoy it man, let the stuff flow.

Grind
it just has a certain speed that sounds brutal, and it sounds kinda like death metal and punk smashed into one

I love the intensity of it. It's mind numbing.
On another note grindcore isn't noise. I'm a big "harsh noise" fan and it is completely different from grind core. At least grind has elements of music (noisy elements). Actual noise is, in fact, just noise.

when i think of grind i think of brief songs (longer than 2 minutes is rare)
blast beating the whole time
lack of circular structure
more shout and less death vocals
all of which symphonies lacks. im guessing you had been drinking when you posted that

As someone who loves Necrophagist, I don't know if you're going to get into modern grind.
I say 'modern' since the first real grindcore bands honoured the 'core' suffix at the end --- they were essentially a meaner breed of hardcore punk bands.
I want to mention Robinson and See You Next Tuesday. Those bands are psycho.
To explain the grind bands we're recommending --- its all about a mindless, numbing, ultra-fast texture. I really think that Circle Of Dead Children is really the best of the genre. Their vocalist is really the centerpiece of the band, something that does'nt happen often with metal nowadays.

To explain the grind bands we're recommending --- its all about a mindless, numbing, ultra-fast texture. I really think that Circle Of Dead Children is really the best of the genre. Their vocalist is really the centerpiece of the band, something that does'nt happen often with metal nowadays.
|
See You Next Tuesday should be considered 'crackgrind' becuase that's what they're on.

See You Next Tuesday too often gets lumped in with the 'girl-pant emo haircut' crowd ... they're just uncategorizable. Although 'crackgrind' is good.

Ok Tranny I interpret grind as this - Derivitve of punk and crust. Gore however is just and adjective that has been randomly slapped onto bands that have gorey lyrics. I visited the Cannibl Corpse page on Metal Archives last week and you know what it said? Gore metal. Not death metal, gore metal. What the fuck is gore metal? Death metal with gore lyrics? Oh my fucken god, holy shit that's pure genious ok well guess what Sadistik Exekution don't have lyrics they just say "FUKK" lets call that FUKK metal. Oh and Opeth talk about nature and personal thoughts and shit lets rename it to nature and personal thought metal. May aswell lump Atheist and Cynic in with that one too.
That's just the way I see it. The Carcass grind you were talking about is just a more influence from the metal side of grind. To e it's still grind.
I dunno how many others see it that way but I doso that explains my reaction to wat you said.

i think gore metal is its own genre man! yeah gorey lyrics are obviously a part. but bands like exhumed, carcass, impaled, ghoul...all unique sounding bands that definitley warrant a "gore" title in my opinion. semi melodic, lots of blasting...sickly vocals

I feel lyrics don't even come into play when "selecting" a genre.
Example: the band "Vomitorial Corpulence" is a goregrind band with 100% christian lyrics. I would not call them christian goregrind... just goregrind.

Well, the topic of the lyrics shouldn't but the style in which they are done does.

What most of those people call grindcore is really just repeated min2 riffs making noise.

Explain yourself. Criticize all you want, but what you can't deny is the fact that Luke is a good guitarist and writes some pretty good stuff as far as guitar work is concerned.

'take a lot of influence from hardcore bands'
That doesn't mean they ARE hardcore / partly hardcore.
I just found that You calling Sleep Terror and Psyopus Grindcore mind-numbingly stupid.
You can'ttell me those bands possess the sheer ferocity and rawness true grindcore bands have. Sleep Terror are tech death. Their riffs hardly even fit together and are produced very well to give a full sound. Grind bands prefer bad, unbalanced production to give a raw atmosphere. I mean their guitars sound like buzzsaw's for chrissake. Sleep Terror is all about the guitars.
See it this way, Would Emperor's In The Nightside Eclipse be the legendary album it is with Britney Spears' production?
Hell no, the staticy, distant sounding atmosphere fucking makes that album.
Anyway the point im making is that Sleep Terror are not grind, no matte rhow closely their riffs may resemble that of a grind band (which they dont anyway). And Psyopus, although I like them, aren't really raw. So that means they arent raw. Their sound is hardcore, but just cause it is doesn't make them grind.
Hardcore, hardcore, hardcore. Fuck it! there are like 3 hardcore genres in 3 completely different areas of music. Fuck it Fuck it Fuck it.

Yeah, but then Luke goes and talks shit about bands and then tries to join them later when they have guitar slots open ... and as you can see he's still in Sleep Terror. THEN he tries to cover his tracks by saying "I don't want to play any of that RURR RURR RURR RUR death metal"
No, cunt. The reason you're not in Severed Savior is because you could'nt make the cut. He's got chops, and he can write a decent riff, but he talks a game that he can't back up. Which is really sad for Luke, because otherwise his band would have a hell of a lot more respect. Its kind of hard to get ahead if you're ripping on every other band left and right.

I love grind. Because like people have said before. It's straight to the point. No bullshit.
Bands I love
•Blood Freak
•Machetazo
•Birdflesh
•Fuck...I'm Dead
•Whore
•Haemorrhage
•Gruesome Stuff Relish
•Repulsion
•Impetigo (I don't know if they are considered grind but if they are then them as well)
•Terrorizer
•Early Napalm Death
•Early Carcass
•C.U.M. aka Catasexual Urge Motivation
•Inhume
•Cliteater
•Last Days Of Humanity
•Regurgitate
•Maniac Killer
•Jigsore Terror
•Nasum
•The Berzerker ( I guess if they are considered grind)
I really enjoy Machetazo though because they go back to the basics. With so many grind bands trying to add new elements in or trying to add pitchshifted vocals. Machetazo goes back to the classic grindcore sound of Repulsion, and Terrorizer. Straight to the point.
I also love Blood Freak but I don't know if they are considered grind. I mean the songs are short, growls/screams vocals but it has some doom metal, death metal, thrash metal, heavy metal, and psychadelic 60/70s rock in there as well.
But like anything it is an aquired taste. Not everyone can take straight to the point music. People want all these different elements thrown in music, and never want to hear raw, angry, no bullshit grind. My buddy can't understand how I listen to these bands because all he listens to is Trivium. LOL

Good goregrind band, Autophagia. Alot closer to the metal side of grind, and can be really cool depending on what album you listen to.

Definitely. Psyopus is a truly great listen. Luke can be an ass, I messaged him through myspace and he was a dick when I asked for a few playing pointers. So sleep terror isn't big with me lately. Hah, I see what you guys meant.

His response (I bet he'll deny this too) to my questions was:
Go listen to REAL jazz and stop listening to lame shit like DestroyerDestroyer and Psyopus, then practice slowly and cleanly (you know you can do it). Then play the most atonal jazz and metal you can think of. Thats how you play jazz influenced metal.

Funny...because Psyopus has better songwriting than Sleep Terror. I still respect the Sleep Terror project, just not as much Luke as a person.

Grind is the raw, unshinied expression of punk with the extremity of extreme metal.

Precisely. I thought that's why everyone listened to it.

Not that much of a "grind" band, but Cock And Ball Torture. Sadochismo, best record they produced.
Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition, another good band.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Cephalic Carnage or Origin.
Transient: Go listen to Lucid Interval by Cephalic and Echoes of Decimation by Origin - you won't be disappointed.

No way, the best record is "Opus(sy) IV" or "Cock-tales." After Opus they ceased to be Porn-grind.

Christopher Arp has a sweet style of playing, I really enjoy it. He is far better than Luke.
Also, Alienation Mental are fucking sweet.
