Pronounced "dim-moo bore-gear", the Dimmuborgir is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Lake Mývatn, on Iceland. The Dimmuborgir area is composed of various caves and rock formations. It would seem that this has been formed from a lava-lake, out of which molten lava flowed and left behind strange formations. The most famous cave being Kirkjan - the Church - high with a large gothic style vault. Dimmu=foggy/dark, Borgir=castle/fortress.
-taken from dimmu-borgir.com
cant help you on the others sorry.

Bal Sagoth is a mean fuck from Conan.
I think he is Robert Jordans work. He is probably some evil god or something.

While I'm at it, Thyrfing is a cursed sword, given to one of Odin's heirs(don't remember his name). Whomever wields that sword, shall be struck with disaster.
I personally wonder about Borknagar. It sounds like something norse.

From Varg's own words, Burzum can both mean darkness and light depending religion. Its darkness if your a christian, the light if your a pagan.
Oh I just to clear something up. My Own Savior is a lyric in the Vehemence song God Was Created, not to be confused with the Iced Earth song of the same name. I haven't really heard the song, I wonder if its any good.

If you like Iced Earth you'll like it. If you don't you'll probably not remember it too clearly. Like most Iced Earth songs, though, to be fair, not all.

That is wrong..Borgir means Castle/fortress ...not city, because when the vikings left Norway and went to icelan they tok their language with them.
The old language changed in Norway and got influenced by german and english, but It never changed in Iceland.
Castle-Borg=Norwegian
Castle-Borgir=Icelandic
you english speaking guys have a word called DIM right?....that word is taken from the Icelandic/Viking language

True, but I did read somewhere that they named their band after a city in Germany that had some sort of catastrophe happen at an air show or something like that, I'm not sure. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a U.S. military base in Germany, or so I recall being told.

I don't think they put that much effort into the name. The probably put less than the minimum of effort imaginable into that name. I don't give Barnes much more credit than that.

About rammstein: You are correct. And yes, some time ago there was a rather big disaster at an air show there.
About Dimmu: CtD, I just hope you're being sarcastic as I was.....
Cannibal Corpse is a stupid name but I love it.

Quote:
In their search and hunger for ever greater, long-forgotten knowledge and the most terrible of arcane secrets, liches may achieve a new level of existence: demilich. The creature's definition of power, itself, has evolved beyond the grasp of the mortal mind, and so the demilich has abandoned all mortal exploits to survey realms in which only gods thread. Having no interest in the world that gave it form, the demilich surrenders that form, and its body crumbles to dust. Its phylactery, no longer useful, also crumbles to dust. All that remains is a skull. Its essense or spirit is no longer bound to a physical body. With this newly acquired freedom the demilich sets off for new bounderies to explore. There simply is nothing else to concern it within the realms of mortals, perhaps only to consume or destroy it. By the time its body falls into ruin, the lich has learned virtually all of the arcane secrets of its world - all things that both should and should never have been discovered at all. It has millenia to reflect upon its evil and the nature of power, and has mused upon which even the blackest of hearts would call vile. Even though, the demilich is a disembodied life form caught between the Negative Material, the Ethereal, and the Astral planes, the demilich can effect the Prime Material plane by directing energies from those planes it inhabits.
|
think this is wat demilich means

Satyr (of Satyricon) always wanted to be a Decepticon in the Transformers when he was a child and so he named his band after the name that he would award himself if he were ever to become the said Decepticon.
Suidakra is just Arkadius backwards.
Oh and Nile take their name from the river of the same name, no hidden meanings at work at all here.

amorphis - derived from amorphous, the word for everchanging
st. vitus - name of a sabbath song "st. vitus' dance"
i think they keep the name nile due to the interest in egyptian history and mythology
oh and one more for you
Evanescence - it translates roughly to "suck" in american

Kataklysm (cataclysm) - a disaster (earthquake) or a violent upheaval
Masatdon - prehistoric creature, ice-age i think
Amorphis - something that doesnt have a shape

sadly, sir, i must disagree. a 'lamb' is typically one who is picked on / tortured / whatever. 'Lamb of God' is a saying which is meant as the one upon whom god projects his misgivings and anger.
EDIT: i talked to Randy about it.

I'm sure that the adjective for not possessing shape is amorphic. cxmachine already said that Amorphis was a hijacking of the word amorphous.

i dunno if these have already been said, but:
"psycroptic" i believe means something to do with greek gods.
"cryptopsy" ive been told from a nameless source is a combo of the words "cryptic" and "autopsy". 100000000:1 this is the case.
"strapping young lad" is evidently a bunch of men with some sexuality issues.
"captain cleanoff" was invented when the guys were drunk.
hah, psycroptic and cryptopsy are almost anagrams of each other.

The closest word I know to Psycroptic is the prefix 'Psychro-,' which comes from the Greek for 'cold.' I have no idea how that helps us understand what 'Psycroptic' means.
Jesus is traditionally the 'lamb of god,' which is latent with meaning due to the tradition at the time of sacrificing a lamb, and, specifically, with the Hebrew tradition of the Paschal lamb, whose sacrifice saved the first-born sons of the Jews during the final plague. Considering the way the New Testament was used to re-read the Old in allegory, it should be obvious how the connection was made. If Lamb of God want to claim it means something else they may feel free, but it definitely signifies Jesus.

Opeth was originally called Opet, and Opet means the city of the moon in some guys fictional tale.

It does. An autopsy performed on a crypt is basically grave-robbing, or at the very least disturbing. Both of these acts can be considered desecration. So cheer up your smiley.

Samael is another word for Satan, if i'm not mistaken.
Einherjer means glorious death or glorious dead, something like that.
Megadeth means 1 million deaths.
Manowar is an ancient battle ship.
Ensiferium means "the iron bearer".
Therion means "beast", if i recall correctly. also, in the Secret of the Runes album, the names of the songs are places in nordic mytholigy (i fucked up this word so bad).

Just go to google and look up norse mythology, you'll reconize alot of names. Naglfar I think hes the guy who leads the boats for the final battle between the gods and the Jotun the ancient giants. You'll also see "Fenris" who is an evil wolf god who devours the earth. Lord of the rings too, gorgoroth and others I cant think of off the top of my head. The bible too Behemoth, Sodom, Vaginal Jesus, Rotting Christ. Yeah I ha fun with that bible one

Hi, lets start a band with an egyptian theme and give it an egyptian name, with no corrolation whatsoever between the name and the theme because it is a hidden meaning that just happens to fit with the egyptian theme.

Behmoth is satan represented in the form of an elephant. MARDUK is the god of Mars in Sumerian, and one bad mother fucker too apparently.

Dear MyOwnSaviour,
I love you because you introduced me to Finntroll. Which, if I'm not mistaken, and if it hasn't already been mentioned, signifies their passion for trolls, and the fact that they come from Finland.
I'm listening to Trollhammaren right now, and I will buy that album very soon. That translates as "Troll Hammer."
Kthxbi,

In the Sumerian creation myth he basically performs the same role of St Michael against Satan, except against, if I recall correctly, Tiamat. I think there's another equivalent in Ragnarok, but I really can't remember it correctly. It's actually interesting to go through these and find all the direct parallels.
