Maybe you haven't heard of Zach Gibson from Gutrot. Shits on anything he did with BDM.

All percussionists (that have their own style) tend to only go rkatjnbgkjadnbjanbjtbn or some other sound though. I personally love Sandoval's tom rolls.

Theres a Norwegian band called Zeenon who are all women but for the male drummer, aka Mads.
He is one solid death drummer. Reminds me of Hate Eternal's dude.

That really sounds hot!!!
Imagine, a little private pogolesson...^^

But back to the main topic... I guess the best drummer is the drummer of vader, bescause hes very fast but not just hammering on his kit... He knows what sounds good and is using the right beats for the music!!!

Unleashed's drummer is very cool, too... Headbanging to that music is very great!!!

Maybe this band isn't that known in the majority of the (american) metalscene, but the drummer of GOJIRA is just...amazing!
I saw them live (backstage ) a few weeks ago, and that guy rocks!
Not just plain old blasting, rolls, trying to make his bassdrum go at light-speed, no, he does great, slow, but difficult patterns, combined with speed, flair, ...
I'll search the internet for a video.

Edit : can't seem to find anything, but you can watch the video at www.gojira-music.com

"Remembrance" is a live clip (awsome)
"Love" a real videoclip

EDIT : Goddammit, i just saw i posted this in the wrong thread!
Sorry 'bout that, i'll put it in the right one

i agree with dead to a certain extent. roddy does some cool stuff (i monarch is his best) but he doesnt come near some of the newer drummers. roddys playing was really weak when he first started in the death metal circuit...in cold blood and black seeds of vengeance are really generic performances. roddy has definitely hit a new style and i think hes a great drummer...and influence. but he gets a little too much credit. justin can do a lot of the stuff roddy can do (not for 45 minutes in a row)

i dont hold a grudge against roddy and i appreciate what hes done, but he gets a bit too much credit when there are plyers like deron cesca out there

This video is for everyone who thinks Derek Roddy is overrated.

I would like to see another Death Metal drummer attempt to play that. Or even any drummer. He's fucking insane.

Even if he wasn't to creative when he first made his way into the genre, he was pushing the speed limit along with a few other guys.

i question that he was pushing any speed limit when he first got into the genre. he was solid and fast, but he certainly hasnt ever been the fastest...or even tried to.

hrmmmm, darren cesca of goratory/pillory is who jumps to mind first. youve seen the video if him playing ...if you need a refresher check the goratory page.

whoever drums for aeon does blasts as solid as roddy
inferno from behemoth (his skill increases with each album)
the decapitated drummer (is it vitek?)
whoever drums for martyr plays with time signatures on the level of roddy

for pure speed tim yeung also surpasses roddy (agiel/decrepit birth/vital remains, but not so much VR because that seems to be faked)
thats about all that comes to mind

Will you at least educate your self before you come into the drum forum talking shit. Very little drummers were playing much over 220 BPM in the 90's, if any. Derek, Tony Laureno, Nick Barker,... all started pushing the BPM boundry together, and they are all among the very few who can play in the 250 range today.

ive seen vital remains live with yeung playing drums, the guy is fast but not as fast as the stuff i heard that was more recent. as far as protooling songs, i dont know
i imagine protool looping blastbeats, then speeding them up would be easy so it could be true. thing is i saw them like 6 or 7 years ago.

i wish theyd play locally so i san see for myself

I think the least recognised is david gray from akercocke he is a great drummer and hardly anyone knows him.

Even though this is the over rated thread i think he is under appreciated.

Lars Ulrich, Joey Jordison. Almost every starting drummer I've known looks up to these guys as Gods. Granted, they are just starting out drumming. But most don't open their minds up to drummers like Vinnie Paul, Bill Ward, and Virgil Donati.

I like Joey, but I hardly think he can revolutionize drumming or has already. And Lars? Not THAT great of a drummer. Ok drummer, but hardly someone to be renowned for evolving drumming and music. Plus, his playing on St. Anger.... well, sucked. It sounded like he was beating on a bunch of trash cans.

Hah yeah that Goratory guy is a machine. Inferno is decent... as well as Vitek, they're good but not some of the best I don't think. Hah Yeung is good though, that's some crazy stuff. Imagine playing a setlist of theirs

Okay Joey has done more than you think for Drumming, I mean I am not saying he is the saviour of modern drumming or anything like that, but he HAS put Extreme metal drumming styles into a popular style, I mean you listen to Joey drum, which plays on MTV and alike, and the guy is blasting (occasionally) and using lots of double bass etc. but you are right in that certain fanboys, do blow him out of proportion.

now for Lars, he deserves a pedistal for the simple reason, he inspired an entire GENERATION of metal drummers, you listen to Justice, which is Lars best album drum wise, and you can see why when a LOT of people first heard that album they were like 'coool I wanna do that' but that said, Lars has commited some pretty terrible sins

like St Arsewhipe

but I still forgive him, simply because of what he did in the 80's

You do have a good point. With both drummers.

Yeah, wasn't it Dave who played drums on that album?

Regarding Lars Ulrich, I'm not a great fan of his drumming but he was one of the first (if not the first) drummers to synchronise his double base with what James and Kirk where playing rhythmically.

Yeah, Dave has the credit of playing drums on Dechristianize.

Derek never said it was that album specifically, he just said he knows of an album everyone always talks about the drums on, that he knows is fake. It might be that album, but it miht not. So I wouldn't just come out and say that "Derek said blah blah......".

This may be an ignorant response, but I find Travis Barker a very overrated drummer. I've only heard a few Blink 182 songs (1 is too many), and he sounded just decent, but not great. Yet I've seen in other forums and people at my school trying to compare Travis Barker to whoever. Most of the time, Travis comes out on top. Why?

As I said, this is probably a response with little knowledge about Travis.

I have seen a couple of Travis solo's

some of them are alright, nothing to cream ones panties over, but not bad either, I have seen him bust out some nice chops and also some nice rudiments.

but he is probably capable of so much more, but he the style he plays in, means he doesn't really get to show off as much as he probably could.

this said, I don't think he is that great either, just he isn't bad.

i think maybe 3-4 years back i saw a solo from him at a concert...there was fire going around him and stuff but besides that...the fire was the only thing that was interesting

Overatted: Lars, Bonham, Moon, Neal Peart, Vinnie Paul ect. But especially Neal Peart. He has these huge drum kits but hardly any of the drums get used.

Underratted: Smattro Ansjovis from Birdflesh, and Dopi from Machetazo for being able to blast fast as fuck, do crazy rolls, double kicks, and still being able to growl/scream lead vocals is pretty impressive.

Also Kevin Talley (ex-Dying Fetus, Misery Index) is pretty darn good in my books. He is so fucking tight with his drumming. He can do all these crazy fills but still remain in time.

Ken Owen is another that is pretty underratted. He created some pretty cool beats for Carcass.

As far as Flo or George. Well they are amazing drummers in their own right but I wouldn't consider them gods.
