Favourites of '05
My abbreviated list:
1. Nevermore
- Godless Endeavour was so, so good. I'm still listening to it. I'm listening to it now.
2. Corrosion of Conformity
- Likewise. Their best yet.
3. Porcupine Tree
- This is certainly will not be everyone's bag. Typically, that would lead me to criticise the quality of your bag. Deadwing is a genuinely beautiful album.
4. Pig Destroyer
- I have very little time for grind in general, but PD turn my head at fifty paces. Well concieved and disturbing instead of pointlessly brutal garbage, unlike so much other grind.
5. Demons and Wizards
- I know, I know... I'm not mad about power metal and may have on previous occasions said rude words about Blind Guardian AND Iced Earth... but this album still works. If you ever have to listen to power metal, it should be this. I was fucking surprised.
Some honourable mentions for being well brutal:
Bloodbath, Nile, Blood Red Throne, SYL
And some where my expectations were too high:
Opeth, Exodus, Marduk
Oh yeah - share. Person with the most KVLT choices wins a free swipe at Dissection's smelly little man-crevice.

1 - Savage Circus "Dreamland Manor"
best power metal of the year by far. amazing debut.
2 - Domination Through Impurity "Essence of Brutality"
it eased my tech death metal needs for months. another great debut.
3 - Dragonforce "Inhuman Rampage"
great, but not as good as their previous album.
4 - Nile "Annihilation of the Wicked"
Nile keeps the bar high, with another excellent album.
5 - Hate Eternal "I, Monarch"
their best album so far. good stuff.
6 - Majestic Vanguard "Beyond the Moon"
it was a great year for power metal. another awesome band.
7 - Exodus "Shovel Headed Kill Machine"
still making good trash after all these years.
8 - Falconer "Grime Vs Grandeur"
another band that keeps making quality albums.
9 - Dreamtale "Difference"
more power metal. why? because it's good.
10 - Cryptopsy "Once Was Not"
very good on its own way.

1. Burst
-Origo, snuck in so late in the year, and what a great CD! All i've listened to since its release a week and a bit ago.
2. Hate Forest
-Sorrow, Last album from the Ukranians...and what an exit. Bleak as anything Black Metal with death vocals.
3. Red Sparowes
-At The Soundless Dawn, Blew me away. One seriously good piece of music. Haunting and well thought out. A truly great release.
4. Nile
-Annihilation of the Wicked, What an album! Heavy...'nuff said
5. Yob
-The Unreal Never Lived, Heavy as shit doom with great vocals
Most Dissapointing Release - Opeth, interesting ( ) use of keyboards completely ruined the album for me.

1. Hate eternal - I, monarch
Each time HE releases a new album its christmas and birthday at the same day for me.
2. Nile - Annihilation of the wicked
Nile are always amazing, and this time they had kick ass production aswell.
3. Cryptopsy - Once was not
Alex Aburn proved to be an awesome songwriter after all, so the record turned out great although a little bad production guitar wise.
4. Blood red throne - Altered Genesis
Kick ass death metal..... and its norwegian! wohoooo
5. Domination though impurity - Essence of brutality
Damn, these fuckers are crazy, and soooooo underrated.

In my opinion, Soilent Green's best work.
Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer

Nevermore- This Godless Endeavor My second favorite band in the whole, wide world is hard-pressed to disappoint me.
Opeth- Ghost Reveries OMG itz s0 nU m3t4l!!! l0l! Haters, fuck yourselves. The keyboards are barely noticable. There might as well be no keyboards on the album. That said, this is probably my favorite Opeth album yet.
Enslaved- Isa
Dark Tranquillity- Character
It's actually been a sub-par year compared to last.

Nile- AOTW
Great album, nice production
Hate Eternal- I, Monarch
Great song writting. Derek really shines on this album, sick drum patterns. Great production compared to KOAK
Aeon- Breeding The False
Really brutal and raw sounding. Great writting(Besided the country song )

Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine - Not their best, but it's a relief to know bands are releasing that type of music in 2005.
Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution - A few classics here, and also some garbage, but again, good to know this stuff is still being written.
Immolation - Harnessing Ruin - HEAVY. It's Immolation.
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked - Best Nile yet, production has vastly improved over any of their previous albums.
Death Angel - Archives and Artifacts - Pure aweome oldschool thrashness. The dvd kicks ass.
Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian Rerelease - Labels should re release more old stuff like this.
Atheist - Rereleases - Looooong time coming.

Yeah it does because Steve and Greg both LOVE black metal. It has the guy from Xhaster(sp?) on it and they do an Immortal cover that sounds absolutly nothing like the original. It's only like the Whites in the drone sence otherwise it's pretty different. Nothing beats "Flight Of The Behemoth" for me personally, but this is second best so far. Get it!

Well since the year is not over and a few releases have not yet come out (Bile, Blood Freak, Ghoul, Frightmare) these are my favourites so far.
in no order
COFFINS-MORTUARY IN DARKNESS
Where most bands said "Look at how fast we can play!" Coffins decided to go the other way and create 10 min long songs of pounding slow sludgey Doom/Death. In the vein of Autopsy and Winter. I love it for standing out and being different.
KREATOR-ENEMY OF GOD
The mighty Kreator are back! Raising the level damn high for other old school thrash bands. This release fucking rips. It is a combo of their melodic eras of the 90s such as Endorama and their thrashing return Violent Revolution. The album has a very gothenburg type feel to some songs (something which I don't prefer) but instead of a wimpy idiot on vocals we have Mille. His rabid pitbull like growls and snarls mixed with his calming whipsers make this album wicked. Did I mention amazing drum work and damn good guitar work as well?
IMPALED-DEATH AFTER LIFE
AH!! My favourite doctors of death are back! Although I don't like the production and the new guitarist's vocals I still love this album. With the orcastra playing behind shreding guitars and Carcass-like vocals this album rocks. Some songs have some Anthrax riffage to them. But again the shitty production is annoying. Also the guitar work was much better on their magnum opus Mondo Medicale. Impaled went for a raw sound instead of their sharp clear production of their last album. Although not the best from Impaled it is still a good album.
MACHETAZO-SINFONIAS DEL TERROR CIEGO
A full concept album about the Blind Dead films from the 1970's, this album fucking grinds. Spain's Machetazo's 3 album is a killer one. Pure unrelenting Dark Death/Grind. Also a guest vocal appearence by Chris Reifert of ABSCESS! The production is thick and dark and the vocals are evil. Recomended to all grind freaks.
I'll do more latter...

It's got to be said, I haven't bought many albums that have been released this year but those that I have bought have been really good. the best of the bunch are as follows:
1. Isis - Panopticon
This is far and away my album of the year. I've listened to it solid for nearly two weeks now. So heavy, yet so ambient; this album drips with the quality of Hydra Head mainman Aaron Turner. Genius.
2. Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
The first two tracks make this whole album for me. The ethereal introduction of Dusk Falls Upon the Temple Of The Serpent On The Mount of Sunrise gives way to the maelstrom of Cast Down the Heretic which simply brims with consumate Nile brutality. The contrast is just mindblowing. Throw in the best quality of production and you've got yourselves a monster ready to rip your bowels out. With a rusty spoon.
3. Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone
I'm not sure whether this is as good as Chronozon, but I'm not sure blackened death will ever be as good as Chronozon ever again. However, as a stand alone album this is miles ahead of their nearest competitors and Jason Mendonca's voice continues to be one of the best and most versatile in the business.
4. The Red Chord - Clients
I quite liked this album, even though a lot of critics claimed that it was not up to the standard of what had passed before. Fortunately, I'm in the position of not hearing Fused Together in Revolving Doors to this date and so I can fully realise that this is a quality offering irregardless of past glories.
To date, I have not heard Cryptopsy's Once Was Not but it is currently winging it's way to me as of now. Cryptopsy would seriously have to be sliding at a rate of knots to disappoint me, but we'll see...

The Universal Favourites :
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Flo and co. reinvent themselves successfully, and make a great work instead of playing the "more brutal than thou" game. Innovative production, too, like the fluctuations of bass frequency saturation in 'Carrionshine'.
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
The release date of this monstrous disc has to be in a Mayan or Sumerian calendar somewhere.
Hate Eternal - I, Monarh
Nimble, dextrous power trio work. With Derek Roddy resting in the upper eschalon of metal drumming, along with Rutan and Anderson's quirky fretwork and forward thinking lyricism make Hate Eternal one of death metal's most promising ambassadors.
Meshuggah - Catch 33
You all know how much I love this band. As complex as anything they've ever done, this is their most sprawling and far reaching effort.
( You know what? Besides those I just listed, I have no clue when my new favourite discs were released. I'm just going to list music I started listening to
in the last year )
Now to my personal favourites, in addition to the previous listed :
Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer
Listen to this album on repeat, while asleep.
Goratory - Rice on Suede
WEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!
Wormed - Planespharium
This band should be famous.

Best In '05
My top 5 in '05:
1. Defeated Sanity promo track - Hideously Disembodied
Yep that's right, one track has quite simply destroyed 2005. It's just a cheaply recorded pre-production track avaliable as an mp3, and the production is rather crap, but the song is mindblowing. Lille Grueber has shown that he can write incredible songs in different death metal styles, making me wonder if he will become the Luc Lemay of this generation of death metal. 2006 will surely be the year one of the greatest albums of all time is released.
2. Disgorge - Parallels Of Infinite Torture
I can't believe it, I think I'm the first in this thread to mention this album. For fuck's sake, this is one of the greatest DM albums ever, and certainly the strongest release by this band. This time they had two guitarists, and Diego has sure as hell made the most of this, the harmonies and variance between the parts are constructed brutifully (ok that sucked). The number of riff modifications in the songs is astounding, and he hasn't gone too heavy with the random pinch harmonics either. The vocals are great too, brutal as shit yet I can find myself making out some words in most songs.
3. Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Well, everyone's got mixed opinions on this one, but I loved it. It's not their best but not their worst either (actually I can't decide which is the worst!). It's got more of a NSV feel to it, but hints of the more recent albums as well. Alex's riffs rule, and his solos, while not as good as the mighty Levasseur's, still are great for the music. LW's vocals are fine for the most part, and his lyrics are the most insane shit he's written so far. I've only got one thing to say about Flo: WHAT THE FUCK IS HE DOING AT 3:27 IN 'ADESTE INFEDLIS'?? I only wish the bass was louder in the mix, Eric deserved better.
4. Beheaded - Ominous Bloodline
These dudes don't play the most original or technical stuff, but they sure have the 'rule factor'. Vocals are fucking killer, riffs are solid and grooooovy and I just dig the shit out of the drummer, he's got a lot of style.
5. Nile - Annihilation Of The Wicked
Many will disagree, but I find this album to be better than ITDS. Not quite at the level of BSOV, but it's still great shit. George is my favourite of the Nile drummers, this guy is insane, particularly with his feet. Karl and Dallas are solid as always, and Dallas' vocals really kick arse on this album. The production on this album was brilliant as well, the best I've heard by Neil Kernon, no complaints whatsoever. Unfortuneately, like on ITDS, some of the songs get a bit on the long winded side, I'm thinking track 6 in particular, that overused Nile riff goes on for at least two minutes too long.
Others:
Neuraxis - As always with this band, a very solid album, packed with good vocals, guitars and drumming. Still need to listen more though.
Odious Mortem - Damn this album was badarse... a couple of the songs were a little weak but ones like 'Morten's Neurnoma', 'Carpal Tunnel' & 'Golden Excretion' more than made up for them. Ripper drumming from KC Howard.
Deeds Of Flesh - I liked this a lot when I first got it, but grew bored of it too quickly. Not nearly as good as Reduced To Ashes.
Immolation - Their weakest effort, but still a quality release. I hate the production though, way too clear like on Unholy Cult, they need a muddier production like in the Here In After/Failures For Gods glory days.
Gorod - Now this was a pleasant surprise. Great guitar musicianship, drumming was a bit weak but considering it's a chick on the skins she gets my respect.
Origin - Not bad, drumming was sweet, but the songs really lack individuality.
Insidious Decrepancy - Haven't heard it yet but if it's anything like 'Decadent Orgy...', and I have heard that to be the case, then it would be siiiiiick.
Devourment - I've only heard one track so far, but it was awesome. Looking forward to this, any day now it'll be out.
Cephalic Carnage - Loved it at first, but I haven't listened to it for a while.
Mortal Decay - Pretty crap, nothing special about it but I kind of expected that. At least Forensic had the equivalent of at least two albums worth of ownage.
Hate Eternal - It's better than King Of All Kings, but still pretty ordinary. Roddy busts some sick shit though.
Beneath The Massacre - Ripper. Insane musicians, technical as fuck but the songs were actually good. These guys will get better at songwriting I'm sure, but this was really promising.
Domination Through Impurity - A more brutal version of Psyopus. Ie, killer muscianship, shit songwriting.
Ok, I think that covers the albums I bought that were released this year.

Everytime I try to listen to a Disgorge song I feel like beheading pig man. That said, I have never gotten through a full one.

Black Dahlia Murder- Miasma
Definetely my favorite of the year.
If Dillinger Escape Plan's "Miss Machine" were from this year it would definetely be a favorite too. I just never got a chance to hear it last year.

Most of the usual suspects have been mentioned..
Akercocke, Nile, Hate Eternal, Nevermore, Boris, ...
Plus new albums by older bands...Exodus, Kreator, Obituary, Judas Priest.
New album by Cancer wasn't as hot as I hoped it would be nor was the Tony Iommi/Glen Hughes.

BTBAM - Alaska
Fuckin' rules.
Akercocke - Words that go Unspoken..........
Back with another unique release.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Many have mixed opinions on this - I think it's the best Opeth release since Still Life.
Kreator - Enemy of God
People forgetting Kreator!?!??!?? The best album of the year, Kreator's best album ever and perhaps even the best thrash album ever.
And then there's Nile, Behemoth, Arcturus, Nevermore.

This year has been good for metal I think.
1. Meshuggah - Catch Thirtythree
It's almost like Meshuggah are studying atonal music theory. Unique and utterly brilliant this album. Very transcendental and obviously spawned from a brilliant mind that really pushes itself musically, lyrically and perceptively.
2. Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour
Where such great and natural musicianship and technical skill (in all musicians) comes from is perplexing.
3. Hate Eternal - I, Monarch
Very progressive. VERY, VERY progressive. Progressive in the brutality aspect. An aspect not really the subject of progressiveness. Flattened fifths in the place of powerchords (on guitar and perhaps bass) makes it quite hard to even stomach. The cultural touches add that completeness that seals excellence.
4. Chimaira - Chimaira
The songwriting and musicianship quite surprised me when I first heard this. It's pure sound just makes me want to mosh and headbang.
5. Fear Factory - Transgressions
Quite different to the FF known. Almost experimental. Has quite a mature metal sound if anything.
I deserve a flogging for not being able to place:
Nile - Annihilation Of The Wicked
Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine
Soulfly - Dark Ages

I didn't get many albums that were recorded this year but
here are the ones I get
1.Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies
In the beginning I didn't like it much but after a few listens
I liked it very much. The best I've heard this year.
2.Nile - Annihilation Of The Wicked
Not as good as ITDS but it's still very good
3.Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour
I expected it to suck but it was great.
4.Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Good but probably their worst so far.I like Mike Di Salvo's vocals
better than Lord worm's,although he writes better lyrics.
5.Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies
To be honest I haven't listened to it much yet.Hestnaes' vocals
seem like he is trying too hard to sound like Garm.
6.Deeds Of Flesh - Crown Of Souls
Very good but as usual you can't tell one song from another
Well,that's it

Let me correct myself, death metal.
I love the fact I can randomly skip to different tracks in the middle of songs on the Nile album and almost make myslf think I didnt do it. Death metal is just redoing itself. I went though the "br00tal tech death" phase, and it's over. On a related not, Digorge may just be the worst death metal band out. It almost scares me I listen to Al DiMeola and Jason Becker more than I listen to death metal.
Wait, Orgin. "Echos..." was fucking amazing. I think that came out in '05. Nevermind, it was good year for death metal, that albums makes up for the regurgitated shit that was put out.

That would be funny if it were true. I guess if you've listened to the album as much as I have you can tell the difference. anyway
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Can't think of anything else. I can't stand alot and it's hard to come by new music. All my stuff is pretty old.

Anyway, I find it funny that you said you can skip through the Nile tracks without knowing it etc, (which is true with some of their songs), and then say the Origin album was amazing.

Arch Enemy's Doomsday Machine is the only thing that made me pop a chubby this year.I was let down by the Anthems album and let the new album slip under my radar. It's a mean fucking album. I am way behind this year. Being broke sucks.

I think Once Was Not can make it on to my list. I'm liking this album and I've only heard it once. In keeping with Cryptopsy tradition, it's different from previous offerings but there are still the same constants: brutality, technicality and Flo's awesome drumming. I'm also digging Alex's solos - sure, he'll never match We Bleed, but the guy can play.

Nevermore- This Godless Endeavor
enough has been said about this one
Detonation- Portals to Uphobia
awesome, sort of "sequal" to An Epic Defiance, lots of awesome drumming and guitar work, sure to be a hit for fans of melodic death metal
Opeth- Ghost Reveries
enough has been said
Dredg- Catch Without Arms
not metal, but enjoyable none the less. Not as proggy and experimental as El Cielo, but its very catchy and just an all around cool jamming album.
Frantic Bleep- The Sense Apparatus
cool, weird, experimental metal unlike anything I've heard before
Mors Principium Es- The Unborn
different from Inhumanity but still awesome. Lots of shredding guitars, better quality than their first album, and very tight drumming
Nightingale- Nightfall Overture
rerecordings of a bunch of old songs with a bit of a twist
Rapture- The Silent Stage
Right up there with Futile, but with better quality. More distinguished clean vocals and great growls.
Looking forward to new Riverside and Deadsoul Tribe (and Katatonia if it ends up coming out before 2006)

Picking on minor mistypes is always an awesome way to back up your opinion.
Anyway, Disgorge is terrible because of a number of reasons.
1. Writing technical riffs for the sake of being technical, if you believe for second that thoes riffs someone thourouly thought through in a musical way, you are fooling yourself. a.k.a. "OMG they are as technical as Muhammed!" technique
2. Majority of songs just regurgitate the same idea over and over. Listen to how many songs start off the same way. a.k.a. "You cna tell this song is br00tal by the first 2 seconds!" technique
3. "GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG" a.k.a "Growling this low makes us brutal" technique
4. "Abhorrent Desecration of Thee Iniquity" a.k.a. "Look at the cool thesaurus we got at Borders." technique
5. "This production makes us brutal, too."
Honestly, you think Origin's riffing is similar in as many songs as Nile's? Don't get me wrong I really liked "In Their Darkened Shrines" but seriously, they use that whole blast beat + open string trem picking beginning a whole fucking lot.
You "brutal tech. death" guys are funny. Always waiting for someone to say they dislike one of the bands so you can jump on them and tell them about how it is super tech brutality. It's all cool, I went through the phase too.

I shouldnt have to listen to an album over and over before songs start to stick as individuals. Sounds like you made yourself like the album.

That may very well just be the case. But I must say if I didn't listen to music over I wouldn't like anything. Matter of fact one of the recent albums I listened to and took a liking to right away is in flames the jester race. I took to it right away which is rare for me. Never the less annihilation of the wicked was really good.
Edit I have a problem adapting to music without melody for some reason.

Me too. It isn't uncommon. If a band isn't about hook, it's kinda hard to let it get to you the first time.

I wasn't jumping on you, just wanted to know why. You stated your opinion and personally I think you're looking at it a little "shallowly" (can't think of a better word). I certainly don't think they write riffs with the intention of making them as technical as possible. But, to each their own.
As for the spelling thing, how was that using it to back up my opinion, and come on, you know you've done it before as well.

I can agree with THIS point. And that is one of the reasons why I'm not much into Disgorge's later efforts.

Grow up, please.
Cloaca, you came off different than what you said your intentions were. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't think they try to write the most technical rifs possible, just being technical is very very important to them.
obrien, seriously, doesnt the concept of someone having different tastes in musice make any sense to you? What about when they actually explain why they don't like something? I am utterly confused by your stuck up posts. Between the whole "OMG DONT TALK SHIOT ABOU CHUCK !!!!!!" and this, you may be one of the dumbest posters here. Oh and Pat O'Brien sucks.

Stuff with melody. I hardly know any bands and finding stuff I like is pretty difficult. Plus I can't afford it. Took me most of this year before I got into death metal. Before it was all thrash.

Well, I hardly listen to Deathmetal, but try these:
Emperor (Anthems to the welking at dusk, or Prometheus)
Immortal (At the hearth of winter)
Anything made by Opeth
Behemoth (can't think of a realy good album)
Borknagar (The Olden Domain, Epic)

Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer
MABYE SHE'LL BREAK HER WRIST DOING CARTWHEELS!
Isis - Panopticon
Definatly one of my new favorite ablums.
Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
Just saw them live. Good stuff.
Cephalic Carnage - Anamolies
Expected a bit more but nonetheless; it kicked ass. I heart Cephalic Carnage.
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Again, expected more but I still swallowed it. Not their greatest though.
Solient Green - Confrontations
Kick ass.
Nevermore - Godless Endeavour
Whats right and can never be wrong? An angle. But Richard was right, too.
Sparkle Motion - Still Sparkling!
Naturally.
Dissapointments: Circle of Dead Children, Opeth

Battlelore - Third Age of The Sun
-Greatness
Moonsorrow - Verisäkeet
-Great epic album. Little black metallish. Songs were too long, but still, great album
Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet?
-Very good stuff. Not Bodom stuff, but still good stuff.
Lemuria - Tales, Ale And Fire
Ensiferum - 1997-1999
I still need to buy Falchion's Legacy of Heathens.

Sure they do.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Corrosion of Conformity - In the Arms of God, though a return to Wiseblood and Deliverance makes me realize that this didn't kick as much ass as I first believed.
Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer, though I think this came out in '04. But if everybody else gets to include it, so do I. Nyah.
Isis - Panopticon
Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies
I'm interested in hearing the new Akercocke, but am broke and incapable of downloading music. That kinda sucks.

Perhaps I should say it like this "In my humble opinion, I just dislike Disgorge." Will that be less offensive to you? Hehe, and I'm the pussy?
Uhh, right.
You were offended by me not liking Disgorge, so it only amde sense.
Crotchduster came out this year didnt it? Yeah that was good.

Shit, tis is tough. I got a lot of stuff this year, but most of it was released quite a bit earlier. Just to piss you guys off, I'll post it here anyway.
I'm really digging Iced Earth's Dark Saga. Very cool album, pretty heavy, and very melodic. Sure, Shaffer ran out of original riffs after Night of the Stormrider, but Matt Barlow is such a kickass singer, he more than makes up for the ever repetitive gallopping.
I've heard bits and pieces of the new Demons and Wizards, as well as the last one. Liked 'em both. Will be getting them soon.
Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution. My first Priest album. I've heard only bits and pieces of their older albums, mostly the popular stuff. With the exception of Loch Ness, this album kicks ass.
Pretty much anything by Iron Maiden. I just got into Maiden recently, and am listening to stuff spanning their entire career. I absolutely love this band.
Megadeth - The System Has Failed. I think this album came out in 2004. I really dig it.
I can't remember much of anything else. It's too late for me to think. Honorable mentions include: Dragonforce, Stratovarius, Dream Theater, John Petrucci.
I don't know, that's all I can remember. Nothing br00tal or for that matter kvlt here. I am not very hardcore, what can you do?
