Last one for me was either Death's "Voice of the Soul" (I know, there's nothing but guitar, but I played the harmony leads in the higher registers) or "Flattening of Emotions" Can't remember which we learned first.
Cheers.

Symphony X - Sea of Lies (by ear)
Well I found out the intro riff (it's also the chorus) but that fill at the end of the intro I'm not even going to try to figure out right now ... I tried following the guitar exactly even though the bass only does this after the first section of the fill but when I listened to the whole thing I realized the first part of the fill was the easiest.
Say, would any of you know whether they tune down one step or if they use 7/5 strings?
The intro riff is in G and that would be really crazy if they did that on the 3rd fret instead of on the open A (tuned down to G) like I am doing. By the way I'm just getting into that band, this is the only album I've heard so far, and already they are one of my favorite bands! How do they write that stuff?!?

I can't believe someone can mix up Mudvayne and Primus. That's mudvayne.
Speaking of them, the other day I listened to their song 'Dig' and realized how cool the bass is on that track. It's not too complex, but he has this awesome/strange sound that must involve some sort of weird pedal or something ....
He plays slap on a 5 string and he pops tritones on the G and D strings (both at the same time). It sounds great. I had fun with it by improvising a diminished lead throughout the song - mostly fast diminished runs ... THAT by the way is something that's really fun to do. Grab a nu-metal disc and play leads/solos to it: since there usually isn't already a lead and there is no clean singing and the rhythm is simple and has many pauses, it leaves TONS of room for a lead. You have so many options of what you can do because there's practically nothing else going on. It can be hard to follow some riffs solowise though, since writing a chromatic piece to a chromatic rhythm can be pretty hard ...
Anyway I bet everyone will find the last 3 songs that I learned pretty damned funny: Blink 182: '21 Days' A Perfect Circle: 'Judith' Thousand Foot Krutch: 'Phenomenon'
Why on earth did I learn these songs? You must think I'm crazy. Well actually, I teach bass, and those are the songs that my students wanted to learn. Surprisingly all 3 have some interesting bass parts and aren't that bad of songs (excluding apc, I liked them before having to learn that song). They're good songs for beginners, but I think a bit too hard for my students right now ....
And isn't She-Wolf fun Downfall?
Do you play it on a 5 string or do you tune down?

You'd think! but he uses no pedals at all, it all comes from his technique, and his amazing tone from his Warwick Thumb Bass.
Last song i learnt..
Jeff buckley - Last Goodbye (awesome bass intro riff, catchy as hell)

Its not a bad thing!!
Can you get that fast slap bit after the first chorus on Laquer head?
the Slap, Hammer-on-mute, Pop, slap, Hammer-on, sixthlet thing.
it sounds good in overdrive!

Manegarm - Sigrblot
This is my first song that I learned completely by ear, will write a tab If anyone is interested. The song isn't difficult but they are one of my favourite bands, so I really enjoy playing it.

Well,
Badge - Cream
Shapes of Things - Yardbirds cover
When I play bass, it's for classic rock. Metal wise, I play the guitar.

i thought it was going to be a lot harder than it is, i figured the right hand part would be tough to memorize after watching the video but its really pretty easy, you can even play most of the song on 4 string if you really want to.

Haha, not note by note, but close enough imo. Most of the parts follow an easily recognizable pattern, though there are some little parts that are hard to play because i never have done that kinda stuff before
for example:
C|---------------------------------------------|
G|-------7-9----------------------------------|
D|-----8-----6--------------7-----3-----------|
A|---7---------5-----and-----6-----4---5-----|
E|-6-------------4-------------5-----5---4----|
B|---------------------------------------------|
^all 16th notes at 124 tempo
Not John Myung + Play this song = Pain

did you slap/pop the song or you use your fingers? cuz the GP tab i DL'd (i havent heard the actual song) had the bass as a slap bass

Just keep practicing it and the pain shouldnt be as much, anyone can play it, its just having the muscle and stamina, which all comes through practicing hard.
