Seriously though, it was almost kind of strange seeing that sound coming out of someone so little. I guess it was pretty good, but I don't know how long you've been doing it or anything, which seems to be part of the gauge to see how good you are at it. If you've just started those vocals, it was pretty good, but I'm more of a fan of bassier tones a la Steve Tucker.

I have been trying dm vocals lately and I think I have the technique part down. It seems like you are doing a more black metal approach, but I'm not putting you down, I like the sound of the way you are doing it.

When I do death metal vocals (in my car usually) it takes a different technique all together. I push and strain on my vocal chords, at the same time trying to make them go very low, like forcing my adams apple down... to the point where my vocal chords are flapping around sorta. It takes some of straining and the volume of my voice is pretty up there when I'm doing it.. just some thoughts.

Anyway, were you doing that from the gut? I couldn't distinguish it extremely well from Muhammed, so I guess that's a good thing? Yours was not as low, but for a first try I guess it's pretty damn good if you're into the burpy brutal DM vox.

Whoever mentioned Steve Tucker, +1. That dude is the only death metal vocalist whose talent I truly admire besides David Vincent(on anything before Domination), Peter Wiwczarek(Vader), Mark Greenway(Napalm Death), Nergal(Behemoth), Sauron(on Decaptiated's "The Negation", the best feature on that album). Actually I'd say he's my favorite extreme metal vocalist.

Tucker's vocals are far more convincing and brutal than any other extreme metal act I've ever heard, especially on Formulas. I've actually attempted some of his singing when I knew the neighbours were not around, because in order for me to do it like him I have to be pumped up(as in energetic) and standing(for more diaphragm movement). It came out really really well the first couple of times I tried, I have a very loud booming sort of grunt all from the stomach, no strain on my throat but it really showed me that I have jack shit lung capacity. LOL. But the fact that the verses on Formulas Fatal to the Flesh are so long and fast don't really help either. If you want to sound like Tucker, I hope you take steroids. Doing some songs from the Vincent era are fine but I can't do anything from Covenant without actually screaming slightly from the throat, that one's pretty vicious(ie: Pain Divine). I like to sing along to some Motörhead, Sodom and Vader less loudly and it comes out nice.

And I have a very soft voice in normal talk, I never knew I could do such grunting until I tried it without holding back because of the neighbors. Noone who knows me could imagine I can grunt like that.

Unfortunately I have not been able to practice more(nowhere to try, and neighbors are always around in the afternoon).

I definitely agree. I didn't hear Formulas until quite a while after Gateways, but from the first few lines of Summoning Redemption, I was pretty much convinced that I would never like another death metal vocalist nearly as much as Tucker.

Tranny, like I said before, since it was a new attempt at it, it wasn't too bad, and you'll probably get to be pretty good at it with some more practice. Whoever said "burpy" was right though, I think it would sound better once it gets somewhat smoother.

I totally agree. Formulas and Gateways own Vincent's vox. I was actually kinda annoyed when Steve left again right before I was due to see Morbid Angel, and then Vincent rejoined for the reunion thing and announced they would only be playing early stuff. As great as it is, I'm a bigger fan of F - G (Heretic isn't great. How many actual songs are there on this album?).

But my comment on the dude who video'd his vox, you should video yourself without the backing, to hear yourself properly. It sounded like you were just talking really. Practising vocals at home is hard, because to do it properly (from deep down, not from your throat) you have to be really pushing it, screaming/shouting/murdering someone kinda volume, and it does sound a bit silly without the music, whether your neighbours dig the style or not.

Pushing the volume like this is the only way to make the vocal distort without putting too much pressure on your throat, and it's the only way you'll be heard over a band live or in a practise studio regardless of the PA you're using.

But... I guess this topic shouldn't stray too far away from Guitar related videos...

Yeah, I friggin love Tucker. I've got some Tucker era live videos and seriously man, he just commands your attention(but doesn't come up with the coolest things to say between songs. ). But I don't hate Vincent's vocals, I just think they went to shit on Domination, sounded way too lazy. But on Covenant and Blessed they were so fucking vicious, they really brought out the meaning in the lyrics for me. David-Era and Steve-era were like 2 completely different bands, and I treat Morbid Angel as such.

I'm seeing them NEXT WEEK w/ D. Vincent and guests: Behemoth and Krisiun, got the tickets already plus I recently bought the rerelease of Altars of Madness with the DVD. Bet your ass I'm getting it signed. I'm excited as FUCK. Also gonna buy tickets to Arsis/Necrophagist in May soon.

Yeah I don't know a lot of lyrics from brutal DM bands, but stuff like Vader and Morbid sticks quite easily. Just read them a few times I guess. Thrash is fun to sing(Kreator, Slayer, Sepultura, and Sodom especially(working on singing and playing shit from Persecution Mania)I know all the lyrics to Arsis' first album, and I've known those lyrics for 2 years now.

the 1st year you wrote the riff right?if yes its up to you how fast its played you made the riff you decide.im not good at hearing whats what in terms of tone but it sounded fine with me your better off letting a more experienced gear geek fill you in,in that department lol.you looked a tiny bit tense but who dosent when they are trying to play the riff right and trying
to look controlled on camera.keep it up and when you can solo post it.

The reason i do it was because my camera was on a tripod, and all i did was set it once and then i could sit down and play and knowthe shot would be good, if i was standing up i could move foward left right and all over and mess up the shots... next time i make a video ill do it standing up just for you bitching metal tabbers ! But really with standing you couldnt be zoomed in on the fretboard as much/accurately.

Sitting down is far more appropriate for filming though, especially with spacial limitations in a room that may mean you can't get everything in shot, or certain bits frequently go off the camera...

I'd upload some videos, but this shat webcam doesn't work, and even when it did the capture seemed far too slow for some reason. Also, my digital camera on it's lowest setting, made a 2 minute video that is almost 100mb... Weak :/
