You should be vibrato-ing with your wrist, not your finger. Same goes for bends; doing it with your finger often sounds uncontrolled and uneven, and in a live environment these things make your playing sound nervous
I'm not sure if you were doing that because you were tired, but when you bend or vibrato you should use the base knuckle of your index finger as a pivot point, and rotate your wrist. If I ever do a video, I'll stick some vibrato in to show you what I mean if my explanation's a bit shit
Nice guitar, btw :P Is that a RR or a V?

Thanks for the feedback.... there are a lot of things i need to work on to improve my speed/how clean i play and what not. Mostly my technique... you should do a vibrato video, my bends do sound kinda sketchy and uneven, i would like to fix all this but yea that was my RR, http://ranguitars.floriandecher.de/custInvader.html

hmm..... well i "played" for a while, like got my first guitar like 6 years ago, never touched it for 3 years, then started taking lessons, but that didnt help much, so i quit again, then i just started taking lessons again like 9 months ago, and prolly played like 6 months before that... so ive been playing good stuff/actually trying to play for about 1 1/2 to 2 years.

Very nice. I finally saw your backwards videos as well. Those were very well done. I can't wait to see a backwards guitar video from you.
As far as the vibrato goes, there are many ways to do vibrato and your goal should be to master all of them, not just one. Finger vibrato rules if you're good at it. It's the same story with artificial harmonics, there are many different methods of getting them and they all have merit.

Hey, I'd love to get some videos up here, but how do you? Your link was to some other site or something, and I don't know how to do that. Did you have to compress the file at all?
By the way, nice playing. My friend is trying to learn that solo, and it's quite sloppy at the moment, but you played it well.

I just watched the Crazy Train one and it was very good. I was most impressed on how comfortable you looked doing the solo and the tremelo bar stuff. Hell if you made that song look so easy what is some of the harder stuff you can play? I don't know how to play the song, but I'm not sure that I could have done that last shredding part of the solo. Nice work man.

Here' my video contribution for today: http://www.xergenics.ws/
It contains 5 important lessons for beginners:
1. This is one way of mixing two guitar parts into one using "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" as an example.
2. You don't necessarily have to bend your thumb around the neck to play "Purple Haze"
3. The harmonic squeals in the Van Halen classic "Mean Streets" were obtained by using the old "Hit the string with your right hand thumb immediately after picking the string" technique (at least that's how I did them).
4. Only Yngwie should be allowed to play "Far Beyond the Sun"
5. If you intentionally try to come up with something random and clever on the spot when recording a video, you will most likely fail miserably.
For those asking how to record video, here is what I did:
1. Recorded in low-res mode on my digital camera.
2. Removed the Sony memory stick and stuck it in my laptop.
3. Opened the 6.5MB .mpg file with Magix Movie Edit Pro and exported it as a 1.4MB .wmv file because I have limited space left on my website.
(When I get a good high res video take, maybe h4x5839283748392 will host it for me. )

That guitar is a B.C. Rich Warlock NJ, it's pretty old, over 10 years. It goes into a Morley wah pedal, and then into a Marshall MG100HDFX.
I started spanish guitar 7 years ago. Did that 2 years and then switched on to electric. I have lessons from a classical educated man, i started out with a lot of blues and rock 'n roll, i'm glad i did that, because i can dream all pentatonic scales now. Then he wanted to learn me jazz scales, but i didnt really liked it, and now i'm playing Satriani songs, A Train of Angels, Midnight, Always with me Always with you. That stuff, i love it.

(When I get a good high res video take, maybe h4x5839283748392 will host it for me. )
|
lol Yes me the all mighty h4x3209409u52983ycs0d920392n209fu2098r209c032023023434-2394 will be willing to host it for you, i like that vid, the yngwie wasnt that bad even though you fucked up, it was still badass. Can you explain that EvH harmonic your talkin about?

im going to get a vid of me playing at a talent show soon. We played top gun and power rangers and i screwed up power rangers pretty badly because we hadnt ever practiced with the drummer and i had to sing (i had never sung in my life). Besides all that i have no good way to host it once i get it. Oh yea, i started bsing the speed of light solo during the drummers stupid ass improv drum solo at the end, so i'll see if that made it no the tape.

I guess that would be a good video to make.
Here are the three basic methods that I use:
1. Pinky squeals: I'll explain this one first since it will help you to understand the theory behind the other techniques. Fret any note with your index finger while lightly holding your pinky on the same string at any harmonic interval and release your pinky after picking the note. To understand this, first think about natural harmonics (where they are and what they represent)
- 12th fret harmonic - doubles the frequency - half of the string length
- 7th fret harmonic - triples the frequency - 1/3 of the string length
- 5th fret harmonic - quadruples the frequency - 1/4 of the string length
- 3.9 fret harmonic - quintuples the frequency - 1/5 of the string length
- 3.2 fret harmonic - sextuples the frequency - 1/6 of the string length
- 2.3 fret harmonic - septuples the frequency - 1/7 of the string length
Now fret any note with your index finger. Then use your pinky on the same string to iniatiate a harmonic vibration by placing it above the fret that is five frets higher than where your index finger is. Do the same thing at 3.9, 3.2, and 2.3 frets higher than where your index finger is. You may not be able to go 5 frets at the lower end of the fretboard, but you should be able to go 7 frets at the higher end (i.e. fret the 12th fret and rest your pinky above the 19th fret, pick the note and lift your pinky).
If you understand that, then all you need to understand at that point is that you can also initiate harmonic vibrations using your right hand by contacting the mirror image location on the string (i.e. the same distance from the bridge as it would be from your fretted note).
2. Pinched harmonics - This is the technique used by Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. You rest your pickhand middle finger against the desired harmonic location while you are picking the note and then pull it away. You are "pinching" the string sort of.
3. Thumb harmonics - This is what I mainly use because it is generally more flexible as a technique IMO. When you pick the note, you follow with your thumb and brush your thumb into the string at the desired harmonic location.

Well I can play it much better, but I just wanted to test it out and see if the recording and the uploading worked. I had a shitty tone and I fucked up like 20 times, but I don't care about that one, I'm just glad I got the recording going though.

Awesome playing, and an awesome transition between the Hendrix and distorted stuff.

its a natural harmonic around there on the bottom string. I think thats what you mean? at the third fret. theres others at 2.5, and 2.25 and other places. you can get the same harmonic around the 15th, 16th and 17th.
fuck im confused! was that even directed at me? what are you asking? was it even a question? what does f.e. mean?

cheers.
as to your questions um uh ah
i got this good by practising. on and off for 6-ish years
I'm not as good as some guys round here who have been playing for much less time than me. though, 6 months is fucking nothing. if you spend all your time, doing nothing but good practise(as opposed to bad practise) you can expect to be bloody good within a year or 2.
learn stuff you want to learn.
(that may sound obvious)
learn easy things by your favourite guitarists.
