My favorite is Muhammed Suicmez of Necrophagist, he just stands out in his writing beyond anyone I have ever heard. I bet if he wrote popular music instead of metal, he would be on the cover of every magazine that has to do with music today. Naming his band "Necrophagist" probably hurt him too.

Me neither, the guy wasn't innovative, he didn't have anything special about him. Guitar playing sucked, vocals weren't anything to brag about, and the lyrics!

"..It's ok to eat fish because they don't have any feelings.."

Right now I really like Zakk Wylde as a musician, his vocals/acoustic playing/piano playing are kick-ass on the Pride & Glory, Book of Shadows, and Hangover music albums. Especially on the latter two, really moving stuff. And of course there's BLS.

I appreciate Paco de Lucia and Andres Segovia - really awesome Classical/Spanish guitar playing.

Other than that;

Randy Rhoads

And the guys from Blue Cheer!

ofcourse, Randy Rhoads is a fucking legend, I totally agree.

Zakk Wylde is pretty good in songwriting and shit, his guitar work is great but I like more melodic guitar players, don't get me wrong, Zakk's kickass but his stuff all sounds pretty similiar to me, he's not that inventive. (MAFIA is damn good though)

Shut the fuck up. There is nothing special about Alexi Laiho or Children of Bodom. John Petrucci could play circles around that wanker.

[Edit: This is in relation to Guitar World's Virtuoso issue]

Because technical prowess is all that matters.

If anyone is the wanker, it is Petrucci (although I do like DT a lot more than CoB).

Randy Rhodes is the best "modern" musician, but if you want to talk all-time, then Mozart. He was a genious and nobody in modern times can even compare to what that man has done.

uh ok, heres my list with their best examples listed

classical:
Grieg - peer gynt suites
C.P.E Bach - solfegietto
J.S. Bach - toccata & fugue in D minor & air on a G string

Modern:
jeff beck - solo career
Dimebag - most
Randy Rhoads - most
Hendrix - are you experienced?/axis bold as love
Alice in Chains Blokes - some
Jonny Cash - last album
Pachabel - cannon in D major (aka pachabels cannon)
Roy Wood - most

note: this is about musical genious, not virtuosity.
i have separated classical and modern because the classical composers i have mentioned out rank the modern musicians by so much, yet i felt they needed a mention too. modern takes much less composing, yet can still be mindblowing. pachabel is listed as modern because his cannon in D major is one of the best pieces of music i have ever heard, but lack the concentration and thought of other classical composers. it maintains a modern style of song writing, compared to the complexities of classical.

This is quite simple. Me. Nobody can compare, not even Mozart. Don't even talk to me about Paganini - he was trying to rip-off my style before he was even old enough to read music, the twat.

That is a really, really hard question.

Frederik Thordenhal.
Danny Carey.
Bach.
Charlie Parker.
Jaco Pastorius.

Those are some of my personal favorites. There are several more but that's way too many. I really cannot pick one.

Dave Murray of Iron Maiden, he is a Guitar Player that has stood the test of time, trends and fads, he play fast as hell if need be, or those down to earth type stuff as well, his creativity is unrivaled.

Steve Harris of iron maiden, he writes THE best songs ever, he is an incredible bassist, and you can alwyas hear it, whereas other bands drown their bass with guitars, whereas his shines through a three guitar lead, he is a musical genius, bar none, He is Iron Maiden.

Paganini would and could smoke all their asses. he is the founder and the master of shred. Becker, Malmsteen, or no other man can touch his speed, skill, and songwrighting.they try like malmsteen/ becker (i think becker does it better though) but they still cant match any of his stuff. like that steve vai song, he used some of (http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/do.../Caprices1.html check it out his 5th)paganini's 5th caprice(most famous song) some of the songs based of this peice are: eugene's trick bag(crossroads duel), arpeggios from hell, evil eye..... so so many more. zakk wylde wouldnt dare trying to attempt this song. and all rhoads classical influence was a song called april sky which u can hear in good bye to romance and thats about it.
also check out his 24th caprice if ur a becker fan http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/Caprices3.html
and if u are wondering this guy was from the 19th century and started the sontana movement with mozart and them.

What the hell are you rambling about? This is about musicians, but you can't even compare them considering they play different instruments. And of course fucking Zakk wouldn't attempt it, it's not his fucking style.

You can, This is the best musicians freind, not best guitarist, Hes comparing paganini other people as musicians not how talented they play there instrument. Paganini played violin very similar, plus he was a fucking genious. Same with all the great composers. They were mentally born and chosen to do such work, geniouses. No one can even get close to touching them, with out them nothing would exist.

If you like that you seriously need to check out Uli Jon Roth http://www.ulijonroth.com

He is the man and deserves to be listed on this thread without a doubt...

His latest release was "METAMORPHOSIS OF VIVALDI'S IV SEASONS * U.J.R. SKY ORCHESTRA- "

And check out this jam session with his orchestra of "renaissance girls"...

Its a loaded question BUT here goes.. I`m taking it as "all around" musicianship & chops..& since there are MANY instruments here goes...
In no particular order.. Remember we`re talkin "Musicianship"

Guitar... Chet Atkins, Al Dimeola,Tommy Tedesco,Jimmy Hendrix, Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Drums. Buddy Rich, Gene Kruppa, Neil Peart.

Bass.. Billy Sheehan, Geddy Lee, I personally like Robert Trujillo He`s a monster, & Flea from Red Hot chili peppers I`ve seen em live & he can slap. & that guy nicknamed "Spaz" who plays stand up bass on alot of Brian Setzers BSO stuff woah!!..

Horns.. Charlie Parker, Myles Davis, Chet Baker, Quincy Jones, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Dizzie Galespie, I could go on & on in this section

Keys.. Oscar Petersen, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Fats Domino, again many greats including Mozart, Bach, etc..

There are MANY PROLIFIC "musicians" threw history naming the "best" would be impossible... There are however "standouts" that threw sheer talent & ability to make people go WOW & shake their heads & tap their feet or pump your fist in the air...

Everyone of your folks selections mean something to you & thats all that matters, enjoy them & be glad we got to witness their greatness..

Compression + Overdrive + Controlled Feedback (roughly)

Heavy compression is the key ingredient and it should come before your overdrive.

I for one am glad to see someone with some self respect around here.

I personally consider those old classical fucks as musically retarded compared to myself since they were raised in the dark ages and shit. If some asshole in Ethiopia played some basic scales on some handmade custom string instrument would I applaud him? Hell no. I would laugh at him and hand him a stack of CD's to bring him up to my speed.

Good for their day? Sure. Good now? Not even close. That is why they are only suited for elevators, movie scores, students, and old people.

Classical music rules. The musicianship is without parallel in any era - Mozart wrote his first symphony at the age of four! Not a neat little melody on a guitar; not a fluid passage on the piccolo; not even a string quartet. A whole goddamn symphony! The man was a musical genius and outstrips any modern musician, even Jason Becker who I'm sure would be the first to admit as much.

Close, but not quite. Stuff like "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" should not be mistaken for a symphony.

"Wolfgang was the greatest musical child prodigy who ever lived. He began composing minuets at the age of 5 and symphonies at 9. His father took him on a series of concert tours together with his sister, Maria Anna, born four and one-half years before Wolfgang; she, too, was a child prodigy. Both played the keyboard, but Wolfgang became a violin virtuoso as well."

"Mozart was four when his father decided to give his little boy his first music lesson. A year later he started to write his own music, some of which were the Minuet in F, Trio in G and the melody of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. He only had to hear a piece played once and he could replay it all from memory."

I'm not trying to downplay his or other ancient composer's contributions or genius considering what little they had to work from. I went through my classical phase between the ages of 5 and 21. Since then I've lost interest in it because it's quite literally old and uncomplicated to my ears at this point. Absolutely everyone should study classical as well as classic rock, blues, jazz, punk, metal, speed/thrash/death, etc... They all have an important part in musical history. Only after studying a comprehensive collection of historically important artists and styles until your brain is able to resolve them will you then be able to create something truly new and worthwhile...

EDIT: Concerning your claim that classical composers are unparalleled, I would argue that people like Danny Elfman have been doing the same thing just as well or better throughout history, but they will never get the same type of recognition because the book has been closed on that style of music.

Elfman's a one-trick pony and a bad example. Even film scorists like Bernard Herrman or Ennio Morricone pale in comparison to the accomplishments of older composers. Much of film composing 'throughout history' has deliberately ripped off old themes; the most famous example is probably Star Wars, for which Lucas had assembled an actual classical soundtrack, then, because it would be cheaper, just played it for John Williams and asked him to rip it off. You may be right that the book is closed on that type of music, but if so it closed fairly recently and won't admit Elfman for other reasons, such as for being insipid and anachronistic.

I'm not sure I'd say they're unparalleled, but as for knowing their shit about music, Muhammud Suicmez comes off as an illiterate child in comparison, especially as you get into the 20th century where harmonic theory got especially, uh, dense.

I'll buy that, Elfman just pops to mind as both a prolific orchestrator and pop icon combined. I haven't really studied 20th century composers due to lack of interest, but you gotta love Carl Stalling at least for his work on Looney Tunes, etc...

"his most notable compositions include "Putty Tat Trouble," "Porky's Poultry Plant," "Speedy Gonzales Meets Two Crows From Tacos," "To Itch His Own," and hundreds more."

It just doesn't get much better than that my friend...

Jason Becker because of how he is not able to hear a piece in his head and put it to a computer note by note, he is basicly doing classical composers did.

Daniel Mongrain. He is just insane.

Actual, Carl Stalling's a fairly important if overlooked figure, mostly for the freedom of his compositions and his 'quoting' style, which suits perfectly a cartoon that can go from a cat chasing a mouse to a loving parody of Impressionists or Surrealists.

I loooooooove Looney Tunes. I hope that space age redacting crap dies out and they keep the originals on tv until I have kids. Then they can stop.

Can't say just one musician.

Guitar: Steve Vai

others who deserve to be noted:
-Zakk Wylde
-Yngwie Malmsteen
-Joe Satriani
-Alexi Laiho
-John Petrucci
-Jason Becker
-Marty Friedman(uhhh... sp?)
and Justin King and Kaki King are pretty awesome!
-Oh yeah, John Mansley

Composers/Piano guys(now I'm being Lazy)
-J S Bach
-Mozart
-Anybody mention how great Beethoven was?
-I got respect for Paganini, cause I'm learning his fifth caprice.

Best Soundtrack: Shine! Go get it!(sorry, OT, but it's incredible)

EDIT: almost forgot, Jeff Buckley is great. St omg wow! My dog just fell off a chair.
EDIT2: Yeah, about Jeff, listen to So Real, and try to hit the note at the end(you'll know what I'm talking about) without falsetto.

I really need to LEARN about more guitarists and composers. I have a friend who's a (sorry for how dumb this may sound) sick pianist. Awesome, and been playing forever, so I should ask him.

And for people who don't know him, check out Art Tatum! <--Best Jazz pianist, ever. He was blind, and much better than tons of other dedicated jazz pianists.

Despite my obvious lack of understanding in the English language, as kindly pointed out by Chris, this is a singular answer question. So it's a toss up between the following

Bach or Hayden, you find a modern day musician in your lists that can write they shit they did. All without the use of pedals, triggers, studio recording & post effects, amps etc.etc.etc.

Yes it is, but if you're going to dismiss somebody else's non-metal suggestions then you better have your own house in order before doing so. Or at least come up with a more ridiculing retort. Besides, the thread title is 'Best musician of all time' not 'Best metal musician of all time'. I, of course, am top of the pile in either case.

I would say zack wylde damn good guitarist, alex laiho is one of the best in my eyes, not every day you get to be a virtuoso, randy fucking rhodes exalent guitarist kerry king and jeff hannaman are good but if you look at how they play there solos, they just rip and tear on the stage they aren't really done correctly, dont get me wrong slayer is badass but they just dont have any music theory in there playing, pat-o-brian, mick thompson with those bad ass sweep pickings oh my god they fucking rock, i can name a whole shit load of players but one of my likings is jimmi hendrix, kurt cobain is a great guitarist but he was for grunge not metal, but i say the best would be paco de lucia, a damn good guitaris the guy doesnt even use a fucking pick.
but the best musician would be niccolo pagganini, his fifth caprice is a bitch to learn how to play, but he is the best and will always be the best.

to see a creature of the dark you must be a creature of the dark
