The point is you just don't go buy equipment because your favorite band uses them. You have to know how to set them up and what complements or strenthens them. You don't just buy a marshall because everyone uses them. I was trying to give people advice. What an overzealous bastard!

Most fucking definetly Trey Azagthoth's guitar sound on Covenant, and of course on Gateways to Annhilation. Their both the best tones on any record of any genre.

I love that 'eeerr' that the 7-string guitar produces on Covenant. It's clean, I think it must be a case of mids to the sky and highs to the floor.
Personally, I think Meshuggah's sound on the Nothing album is the most crushing. Listen to the song Spasm. Those fucking palm mutes!!!

Ooh digging the dead.
I like Metallica's tone on And Justice For All (ewww he likes scooped mids)
I like Carcass's tone on Heartwork
I like Decapitated's tone on Nihility
I like Jason Becker's tone Perpetual Burn
I like Pantera's tone on practically all their albums.

Origin - Echoes of decimation has flawless tone.
Cannibal corpse - wretched spawn is awesome
Suffocation - souls to deny
Cryptopsy - Once was not (yeah I know many people say the guitar part is lost but if you can't make out the riffs you must have problems and regardless of the mix the tone is killer)
Nile - ITDS It's perfect for what it is

I agree, the sound on MA's Covenant, Heretic and especially Formulas Fatal to The Flesh is one of my fav's, but I love that dirty classic oldschool sound on Altars of Madness.
Other ones include:
Decapitated: EMG's into a Peavey 5150.
Sodom's tone on "Persecution Mania".
Kreator's tone on "Coma of Souls".
Suffo's tone on "Effigy of the Forgotten".
Wormed's on "Planisphaerium".
Behemoth's tone on "Zos Kia Cultus"(the production had more to do with it I guess).
and Immortal's on "At the Heart of Winter".
Hate Eternal's sound as well, what pickups does Rutan use for those solos? I'm guessing it's either a Dimarzio Fred or PAF Pro in the neck.
and for something a little less brutal:
Bathory's tone on Twilight of the Gods and Hammerheart.

I'd have to say Cryptopsy's tone on None so Live
Aborted's tone on Goremageddon
I hate to say it but I like Metallica's tone on St. Anger(I know I know)
Cky's tone
Omar's tone from The Mars Volta
I like Ler Lalonde's(Primus) tone sometimes
Yngwie's tone
and I hate to say it but I really like the tone that that guy from System has
I wouldn't call many of these the 'heaviest' or the 'sickest' but I like them.

necrophagist - mutilate the stillborn (those palmmuted 0's sound like drum blasts to me, i love it)
cryptopsy - soar envision soar vision (or whatever its called)
thats perttymuch the only sick sounding guitar tone i can think of so fast

I think the tone on Justice was much better. Especially Kirk's for his leads...its such a classic sounding heavy

Seriously, put sandman on, from the start, and listne to the chuginess that follows, how can one have a better tone than that?
Cool that you like the justice tone and the lead tone on that album, I think the exact oposit

Nile and Bloodbath on "Nightmares Made Flesh". Pig Destroyer's tone is so wiry, I love it.
On recording though, it seems more about how the guitar tone interacts with the bass guitars than how the guitar alone is EQ'd. That being said, for me nothing beats Mortician blared out of a super-super-high quality sound system.

As I've been into metal for over 15 years now I must say that nothing compares to the blistering buzzsaw tone featured on old-school swedish bands like Grave, early Entombed, etc. made famous at Sunlight Studios

i really DONT like that guitar tone. i like the amount of bass and power it has but you can't hear whats going on unless its done just right. left hand path has the best example of that tone being good but just enough to obscure the riffs.. it doesnt quite do it for me. and the tone on the second bloodbath album just makes my speakers fart. theres no fun in that

My tone is a belter!
Quite like Nile, but louder and more powerful, with a more brutal hiss. All generated by pedal.
I can't wait to feed it through a bigger amp'!

tone. id say Jari had a pretty great sounding guitar tone on the Wintersun self titled. and Fear factory had a great tone on Demanufacture, actually a great everything on that particular album. Agathodaimons tone on Serpent's embrace is also quite nice.

bloodbath - resurrection through carnage
wormed - planisphaerium (could also be considered a lack of tone)
Iniquity - the hidden lore
Splatterhouse - the house that the dead built

Rotten Sound on "Exit", similar to modern Nasum's sound.
Terrorizer(oldschool grind).
Decapitated on "Winds of Creation".
Wormed.
Suffo on "Effigy" and "Despise the Sun", but I also liked the super sterile tone on "Souls to Deny".
Vader's tone on Revelations and Litany, as well as De Profundis.
Morbid Angel's tone on Gateways and Formulas, but production has a lot to do with that.
Behemoth on the last 3 albums.
Sepultura on Beneath the Remains.
Sodom on "Persecution Mania" and "Agent Orange"(fuck yes).
Kreator on "Coma of Souls".
And Napalm Death on "From Enslavement to Obliteration".
I like tight sterile tones, but not so tight that it actually sounds extremely nasally or massively compressed(ie: Vader on "Art of War", modern hardcore garbage, Decapitated on "Organic Hallucinosis", or any other extremely high-tech sounding high gain tones).
I saw an Immolation sticker in that slipknot video.

Nile because of its low tuning and very thick sound (new album)
Morbid Angel - a bit messy but very dynamic
Bloodbath - buzzsaw tone

I'm sure somebody must've already said it, but Meshuggah's 8-string guitars (the Nothing album is what I'm thinking of since I haven't heard the ones after) are fucking HEA-VY! I know, I know. The riffing is a bit simple. But with that low of tones, you can't use chords or get really fast. So while the technical aspect of it is less than impressive (unelss you're talking about the time signatures), it's one hell of a sick sound.
Oh and by the way, if you want the heaviest sound on earth, use a Dive Bomb Whammy effect pedal at it's lowest. All you can hear is staticy rumbling. You won't even have to bother with writing riffs. Just bang on the strings.

Pat uses the same stuff he's been using all along. A 2 Channel Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier (tubes unknown), through Crate Cabs with Celestion V30's, A Boss MetalZone for "added disto" (????? not sure why), His custom made B.C. Rich Flying V's with an EMG 81 for the six strings, and an EMG 81-7 for the seven strings. Also they are equipped with an EMG-PA2 (preamp) for more distortion of course.

Lots of great tones mentioned in this thread so far. I like the well produced tones off of Annhilation of the Wicked-Nile. Vogg of course, all the decap albums have differant tones, and I like them all. Shaeffer from Iced Earth has an incredible tone. Necrophagist.

|
1. verstandszkeizen is not a norwegian word
2. In norwegian, nouns have three forms, aka "sex", male, female or non-gender.
En <something> = Male. (I.E. A car, That car, Several cars, Those cars= En bil, den bil en, flere bil er, de bil ene)
Ei <something> = Female. (I.E. A girl, That girl, Several girls, Those girls = Ei jente, den jent a, flere jent er, de jent ene). Notice that female nouns in the 3rd person singular form end in an A. Male nouns sometimes become female nouns in dialects and vice versa, since you could technically call almost any female noun male (but not vice versa, but some male nouns are considered "ok" to be made female), and female nouns flow more freely in speech unless it has been a female word made male. I.E (En Jente, Jent a, En melkekartong = Ei mjølkekartong (Milk carton)). However, in most cases the second form (3rd person singular form) is still required to end in an A, if a female word is made male. (I.E. We don't say den jent en) Wierd, eh?
Et <something> = Non-gender. (I.E. A table, more tables, that table, those tables = Et bord, flere bord(er)(sometimes "er" is added in dialects, including mine), det bord et, de bord ene(OR a instead of "ene", used in dialects mostly (like mine)).
This is really just a load of random crappy ranting, and i ain't no grammar teacher (texas grammar intended ), but maybe you'll learn something.
