Heaviest, Sickest Guitar Tone
What guitarists has the tone that you idealize and worship....or which guitarists of any metal band do you think has the most bad-assed tone(other than yourself of course)

Wow, AWESOME thread.
The tone on Effigy of the forgotten is pretty awesome. Also, on Tomb Of the Mutilated.

Severed Savior's tone on Brutality Is Law is nothing short of phenomenal - pristinely clear yet at the same time as powerful as your dad's curry-induced flatulence.

The Red Chord (I'd give my legs in a heart beat to pull of those pinches), Pig Destroyer, Burnt By The Sun, Dark Tranquility, Death, Deicide (that lead tone in Bible Basher), Cannibal Corpse. For clean tone, definately Dysrhytmia though (Body Destroyed, Brain Intact has the best clean I've ever heard. Good crunch too.) There's so many and I'm just too poor to afford the equipment and they could all kick my ass in playing anyways. I hate playing guitar.

I like the tone sepultura gets on "beneath the remains", same with "sounds of perserverance" by death, everyones gotta love the "Tomb Of the Mutilated", I'd also like to get similar sounds as nocturnus does on "The Key".

Nothin' wrong with that. I'd have to say Hetfield's tone was the first time I ever perked up and payed attention to the quality of guitar tone. Right now I'll have to go with the tone of Bloodthirst by CC.

Mayhem's tone on De Mysteriis. It's godly. I'm getting close to it on my GNX3 too.
Hammerfall's tone is unparalleled when it comes to clear yet full sounding distortion.

Leng Tches tone on ManMadePredator! Thickest tone ive pretty much ever head with it being as clear as it is. I like decrepit births tone too, thick, and synthetic sounding, almost mechanical.

add:
CC - the wretched spawn
dissection - storm of the lights bane
astrofaes - ancestors shadows (traditional raw black metal with a little bit of bottom end, its an undescribably delicious black metal sound)
amon amarth - once sent from the golden hall
decapitated - nihility
soilwork - the chainheart machine, they seem to have gone backwards in terms of sound quality from steelbath suicide....and i like it.

Euronymous used an Ibanez Tube Screamer and another stompbox with an old Marshall amp on very low volume to create the tone on that album.
Have you heard the album I speak of?

Black Dahlia Murde's tone, and Opeth's. despite my love of Suffocation and especially the Effigy of the Forgotten album, i have to disagree with that being a good tone. im not big on how Terrance sounds on there

its heavy and so is decrepit births. I just wish "blasting death metal" bands would focus more on balancing the mix than making the drummer the loudest thing in the mix.

I don't think that album is very clear guitar-wise and, in my opinion, the tone could be a lot heavier.

I think its clear, but yes, it could be heavier. Don't care though because i'm always too busy listening to the drums on that album.

It's very rare that a drummer can have this effect, but John Longstreth is fucking amazing.

Diablo* has amazing tone on Eternium album, combined with a badass drummer, good bassist and one of the best metal vocalist ever.
Other tones I like, for example Nightwish* (espec. Once), Metallica live, Opeth, Arch Enemy (espec. Anthems Of Rebellion), Killswitch Engage, Mokoma*, The 69 Eyes* and of course RAMMSTEIN!!
*=Finnish bands

I love Origin, but John is nothing special. Leon from Impaled/Exhumed said he had trouble with Exhumed's stuff. 1 word: Pro-tools.

yeah jon must have used that pro tools program the THREE TIMES i saw him live and ripping the shit out of every drummer ive ever seen. i saw longstreth with exhumed and he had absolutely no trouble ripping everyones faces off with his incredible playing ability. the only problem he had with exhumed is that everyone else in the band is a total joke, and thier music sucks.
ok back on topic....
origin does have a pretty good tone in III, i like the tone decapitated has in nihility (which kills me, because normally i hate that dry marshally sound) bodom has an insanely good tone, and i like the guit. tone on the newest fetus album (stop at nothing) but i think arch enemy takes the cake for me. the tone on wages of sin ripped me a new fucking elbow.
by the way, everyone should try to see jon touring with dying fetus this winter....its gonna be very good from what i hear.

It ain't so bad, yet I think Led Zeppelin are fairly overrated.
Decapitated's tone is alright, I think the only stuff I've heard from them is on nihility, I like the wages of sin tone too.

i like the tone of the distortion i can pull from my ibanez and my boss ME-30. but i imagine my amp has to do alot with it too..
it's so punchy and distorted as hell, yet it's really clear. i dunno. i like my tone, hence the reason i use it.

i like sound of opeth. Its actualy quite attainable, just use less gain, and a muff pedal help a lot, if you use some good eq'ing

Spikyhairz's first language isn't English. English is not a very easy language to learn, as it doesn't follow any logical grammar rules due to the fact that it's a bizarre combination of Germanic and Romance languages.
You've butchered a lot of words in your last two posts for somebody who's so quick to criticize. I won't point all of them out as I'm not petty, but you might want to clean up your first language if you want to criticize somebody else's second.

nevermore's tone especially on dreaming neon black and dead heart in a dead world (which i know they use seven strings on).
fear factory - soul of a new machine era (obsolete era was ok too, love the bottom end)
opeth's tone in general

Agreed. A lot of the Dutch folk here have better English than those with English as a first language. It's ridiculous in a way.
Anyway, I think we are all missing the point: Britney Spears had the most uber-brutal tone on her limited-print demo tape, 'The Infernal Darkness Of Our Morbid Times.' A true classic in every sense, this 1992 release put Britney right at the heart of the second wave of Norwegian black metal until she inexplicably decided to 'do an In Flames' and produce bubblegum pop.
This decision didn't go down too well with her fellow kvltsters and a rash of church burnings ensued in protest. A year after the demo's release, Count Grishnackh murdered Euronymous after they entered an argument centred on the reasons why Britney sold out. It was rumoured that Grishnackh favoured Britney's new found direction whereas Euronymous argued that she was tr00, but only in terms of being a cunt.
The rest, as we all know, is history. Now is the time to reflect how this legendary period in extreme music would not have come to fruition without the brutally frostbitten tone of Britney Spears' demo tape.

no way.
English is not the second hardest language to learn, that's bullshit.
Try Russian, Dutch, French, Croatian, Polish or Japanese...
Anyways, heaviest sickest guitar tone? the guys from Congress or the guys from Heaven Shall Burn. I allways wondered what they used, since I've seen them live I figured out they used Engl tops and ESP Vipers with EMG's...

Maybe but english grammar is simple as fuck. Dutch is virtually impossible to learn for Americans it seems, I know an American who lives in Holland but he still can't speak decent Dutch after two years.
He knows the basic words and sentences but our grammar is really unlogical, even I don't understand our grammar, thats how bad it is...

English is pretty much the easiest language. Try learning German, they have the words "die, der, das, den, dem, des, etc" depending on the circumstances, while in English you would just use the word "the".
Just for the record, I can't speak or write German well, but at least I can understand it when its spoken.

I can write, speak and understand German well, it was my major in highschool together with English and French.
German has pretty complicated Grammar, so does French but our grammar just doesn't make any sense, there are rules but some even contradict each other to make it more easier...

I apparently started speaking Dutch at the age of 5, after being exposed to it for a few days when I went on a holiday to see my relatives. My mother also knew dutch.
I also heard that English is the second-hardest language to learn, after Chinese.

Wow, cool can you speak dutch? is your mother dutch or her parents or something?
I don't see why English would be the second hardest language to learn maybe for non-europeans and on a worldwide average or something?
Way to get off topic lol.

after thinking this over, it could mean that to learn it fluently (i.e. control and use of words such as xenophobic, and afflicted, you know the more complex higher learning words) it could be the hardest. But the low brow highschooler "english" that most everyone speaks now is just a dialect of a truly effecient language.

But every language has difficult words... for instance in Dutch 'personeelsinstrumenten-coordinatie' or 'cognitieve-dissonantiereductie'

Haha, sorry. I don't speak Dutch anymore, and I can barely remember that trip (I also went to Disney Land). My Nan is Dutch.

You know the NCAA tried to make "nigger english" into an official language or something? I think I read that at ANUS.
Also, Klingon is a real language now that was invented by star trek geeks. A while ago some mental institution was trying to find a Klingon translator to hire, because one of their patients would only speak in Klingon.
On topic, I really like the cleanish lead tone on Opeth's Windowpane.

The same is true of Elvish, though I think it was Tolkien, who was a linguist first and foremost, and not fans who 'invented' it. It's basically a modified Welsh. There are people who speak it fluently and I think some served when it was filmed. I personally think it's a waste of time to learn to speak a language that won't help you to communicate with the world better, but I suppose there are people who disagree with me.
And I'm a big fan of Kirk Windstein's tone for rhythm.

the most evil guitar tones i have heard are on the following albums:
cannibal corpse - tomb of the mutilated
morbid angel - blessed are the sick
morbid angel - covenant
and also the deicide guitar tone is fucking evil. it sounds so blunt. i dont know how they do it....

Opeth's tone owns, I've finally found a way to match their sound. First off, you need some type of good equalizer in front of a Boss DS-1(new ones) and using a Marshall 1960a cab. I looked at the equipment they used on their albums and I finally figured out that without a good equilizer (unlike amp or pedal eq) your tone will be flat. Get a good eq and hundreds of pedals that seemed weak and thin will now sound good.

hahah, Andrew... that ruled. Anyway, opeth has pretty good tone, but only on still life, thats the only album of theirs ive ever liked. Another great tone is Hate Fucking Eternal! with the sickest marhsall sound ive heard since reign in blood and terrible certainty.
