Metallica was ahead for a while, but when Megadeth released Rust in Peace it eclipsed anything Metallica's done. That's all I can say. I can't choose one or the other, however; it's too close and the pre-eminence of Rust in Peace doesn't make me forget that the first four Metallica records were my school of rhythm guitar for a while.

yeh, Master of Puppets was the first Metallic CD to have nothing written by Mustaine on it. It says so in a book Ive read called "Sound of The Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal" Mustaine has also said so in a few interviews.

i used to be huge into old metallica, but then i realized most of what i listened to was RTL kill, and puppets. considering 2 of the three albums i liked were done by mustaine anyway, and megadeth was much more consistent with quality albums (we'll ignore his alterna album). so overall nowadays i'd go with megadeth all the way. ask me 5 or 6 years ago the answer may have been different though

Reguardless of what they or any of the HRDCRE $tallica fans say, after their last album, I don't even consider them to be musicians anymore.

At least Megadeth never sold out. Ride The Lightning is the only consistent album from Metallica. Megadeth had Peace Sells, Rust In Piece, and Countdown To Destruction. Those three releases are better than all metallica put together. But thats just my own opinion.

Neither side can deny the impact on the music community made by 'tallica.

Ok, here's my opinion. Correct me if i'm wrong, as i'm not entirely sure what went on in the early Metallica/Megadeth stages.

Metallica's earlier albums, and their impact on metal would have been enough for my vote for them. But those earlier albums (Their best IMO) featured Mustaine, who then went on to form another band, that produced another three (Atleast) great albums.

Don't get me wrong. Megadeth is definitely the better band. Mustaine kicks Hammet's ass by far. I just never got into Megadeth as much as I did Metallica. Plus, if it weren't for Metallica, I would not be the musician I am today. Therefore, Metallica gets my vote.

All of Megadeth varies from being fantastic to mediocre at worst. Metallica goes from awesome to dreadful. Megadeth up until 1990 is far better than Metallica up until 1990.

Megadeth's best album is Rust in Peace, Metallica's best is ...And Justice for All. Rust in Peace gets the nod.

#2 Megadeth is Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? #2 Metallica is Master of Puppets. Peace sells gets the nod, the solos on that album alone are better than anything Metallica has ever done.

#3 Megadeth is So Far, So Good... So What? #3 Metallica is Ride the Lightning. I'd say a tossup, 50/50.

#4 Megadeth is Killing is My Business... and Business is Good! #4 Metallica is Kill 'em All. Killing is My Business gets a very slight nod, maybe like 55/45 in favor of Megadeth.

#5 Megadeth is Countdown to Extinction. #5 Metallica is the Black Album. Do you even need to ask? Obviously Megadeth.

#6 Megadeth is Hidden Treasures. #6 Metallica is Load. Here is the point where the differences get ridiculous. At this point Megadeth are still great, while Metallica blow. It is only later on that Megadeth get mediocre, while Metallica manage to suck even worse. Hell, for the sake of proving my point I'll go to 7.

#7. Megadeth is Youthanasia, decent album, not bad but not great. #7 Metallica is Re-Load. Downright terrible.

This is a rather difficult choice...

For the 80's stuff I generally prefer Metallica since I've listened to them for a lot longer than Megadeth. After 1990 however, Megadeth completely owns Metallica hands down(even though that's when they released their crappy albums).

So in a way I love both band just about the same, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Megadeth... just to baffle people who claim to be metalheads/Metallica fans.
