if you wanna get your voice perminatley lower... eat lots of cheese for a while! it worked for me... not really on purpose, i just eat alot of cheese.

but seriously, i find it helps if you do some warm up growls for a little bit, then go smoke a cig, and then drink some water. try not to drink anything carbonated... and maybe even swallow a little bit of honey for a mucus coat.

if you smoke first i find it really does help alot... but you HAVE to drink something after or your voice will be fucked when your done.

I've been smoking actual tobacco out of a pipe. And this is 23978349025x better than cigs for growls, I've found. For what a month's supply of Marlboro's might cost, you can get a decent Dr. Grabow pipe and an ounce and a half of Borkum Riff. Not the finest, but once you get used to a pipe you won't go back to Camel's.

Okay, I smoke MARLBORO. But, then again i am not a vocalist. So fuck it.

I would like to know one thing though, if you light the pipe tobacco, it doesnt go off right.... My friends do something like a pipe (really small)...but the thing is that they have to light it up everytime they take it in.
(they themselves dont know what it is called in english).

I tried to get into pipe smoking, and it was fairly enjoyable for a while. It's just such a hassle trying to light it and pack it properly...especially in windy and generally shitty weather.

Once you get trained to a pipe you'll start to take really huge hits, because you have to take a mammoth hit to keep the thing lit. This has actually increased my lung power some. But yeah, they don't light like cigarettes.

Lol, yea, smoking may make your voice sound deeper (talking from experience) but it is not the best way to have low/deep growls. I can personally say that I have low/deep growls. I did none of your suggestions. Practice, practice and more practice. It all depends on the position of your lips and of course the amount of practice.

You're absolutely right. When I first started growling I sounded like a pig, but I practiced a shitload and finally got a growl. Don't try to use weird methods to make your voice this way or that, just practice.

Also I find that lowering your head slightly while you growl helps. Sorry if that's been said a hundred times already.

Does the baking soda thing work?

Inducing phlegm and the like is horrible advice. The air blown will blow most of it out of the way, and only large amounts could really effect your voice. Milk is definately not a good choice. Drink slightly warm water to clear your throat, not cold water. Liquids won't help much aside from effecting your muscles because of the fact that your vocal chords reside in the larynx, and liquids go down the pharynx. Smoking will only coat your voice with a sort of "Artificial sweetener," and the idea of that is just stupid. The best way to achieve a deeper growl naturally is to to open your throat, and practice an "O," becoming a sort of windpipe as you push with your diaphragm.

I tried gargling baking soda with water once, it tasted bad and it didn't do anything to my vocals.

Everyone is going to hate me for this, but too fucking bad I find that in my case, if I smoke right before I growl and then drink some cola at room temp. I can growl deeper. However it doesn't last forever, and there are those health risk thingies, and the terrible smell; but I am not too concerned because I am not addicted, I mainly just smoke on the weekends when I really practice my growling.

I don't know about the cheese/yogurt/milk thing, but the cola helps with phlem, if that is a desirable thing. I find that coke is better for that then pepsi because it is easier on your throat and not as bubbly, even though I think pepsi tastes better.

Well I found smoking makes my growling more raw, black metal like, but my growls don't get any lower. Drinking milk gives a soft feeling at your vocal chords, really handy if you have been growling for a long time and your throat begins to hurt, but I can't say it improves your growling, it just makes it more easy to growl for a longer time
And baking soda... well I don't think that will help much either, but I usally do gargle with salt water when my throath really hurts, but that should help against infections and stuff, not your voice

I do gutterals, and I can go lord gore low. There is only one secret, and it is practice to fucking music. Sit there, in your room, blast some brutal death metal you know well, and practice along with it.

one thing i found very important especially during the winter is listerine and i dont mean the pussy mint or orange stuff... and ive found that the bakeing soda helps amazingly with guttural stuff

After heavy lifting/football/etc and your muscles are sore if you drink i think 1 teaspoon with 16oz of water yor muscles recover very very quickly.

So i would think gargling baking soda would help recover the throat soreness and get it ready or some more death metal violence!!!

I need to get educated on some technique.
Our vocalist wants to do something like nile and have all of us doing vocals.
I am expected to do the low gutturals because I have the lowest voice, but I havent the slightest idea how.
Im talking about the stuff he does in the end of user-maat-re on annihilation of the wicked and it almost sounds like a long low belch.
My guess is that it is an inhale but I dont know.
Any ideas?

Nah man, you go ahead and yell into a mic, you'll never sound like him, all you'll get is a fuckload of distortion. I'm not a huge fan of Slipknot, but I do like a lot of Stone Sour songs and his cleans are also quite good. Hes not perfect, but at least he doesn't fake his voice through effects 'n stuff. I kinda respect the guy ;-)

well, I'm not too into clean vocals myself......so I wouldn't be the best judge, but I like the way Ihsahn does clean vocals, and vortex. Corey taylor isn't near them at all, just in my opinion though.

Well, of course, we all got different taste, but i like his clean voice. Vegard Sverre Tveitan(Ihsahn) is pretty damn good too, but Corey Taylor has a total different way of singing. I like Corey better, but Ihsahn also got a place in my favorite list :P But as i said before, we all got different taste.

Well, of course. But, as this is the vocal zone, i was focusing on the vocal part. And both are good vocalists, but they have completly different styles, so its kind of pointless comparing their vocals.
