Best opening/closing riff to a song.
I usually don't start threads like this but i gotta see what others think.
Opening: Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe" (mabey one of the heaviest and best riffs ever)
Closing: Thorns' "Interface to God"
what are your favorites?

I love the intro to Slaughter of the Soul by At The Gates
And i hate closings that are just feedback

i hate intros where they just jump right into the riff with a whole lot of blastbeats
"you gotta warm up the oven, before sticking in the turkey"
i love the meshuggah - transfixion intro, where it sounds like it's fading in, and then there's a sudden increase in volume, that's awesome.
i really like the nile - the howling of the jinn outro, it's all dark and depressing, and it just fits so great after the brutal music.

actually this is a pretty nice thread.
there are a lot of starter riffs i like.
Dark tranquillity-punish my heaven. its instant energy!
mithotyn-upon raging waves. a nice calm ocean intro that goes into guitar.
kalmah-hollow heart. a nice fade in melodic riff
arch enemy-ravenous. i like how that one starts
in flames-moonsheild. nice acoustic intro.
theres a lot more, but im going to stop there. i can even think of more anyway.
I dont like the closings that are fade outs. ESPECIALLY when it is a different part that wasnt played earlier. thats just wrong.

The opening to War, Burzum
I hate the opening to Raining Blood/Reign in Blood - Slayer, are they two songs? or are they just the one song misinterpreted?
I hate the closing of The Last With Pagan Blood - Amon Amarth, fading people talking is crap

Opening riffs. Hmm. These aren't exactly "beautiful" or "touching", I just happen to think they are great riffs:
Vile - Interrogation Rites
Deeds of Flesh - Human Trophies
Necrophagist - Only Ash Remains
Mortal Decay - My Mind Bleeds Tragedies
Pyaemia - Impaled on Stakes

Openings:
Morbid Angel: Caesar's Palace
Slayer: Metal Storm/Face the Slayer
Slayer: Hell Awaits (album intro)
Megadeth: Lucretia
Endings:
Obituary: End Complete
Carcass: Empathological Necroticism
Slayer: Hell Awaits (album ending)
Impaled Nazarene: Suffer in Silence
This is crazy, too many songs to list.

AHEM... Vile - Unit 731 just starts off and you seem to like that song.
Slayer - Raining Blood has that awesome thunder effect, then the tom drums... than BAM! the song starts.
As for outro's i like the outro to Arch Enemy - We Will Rise... the solo's just kinda fade out.

davidian - machine head. starts off with probably my favourite riff of all time, and ends with a heavy repetitive riff that fades out.
fire in babylon - shadows fall. opens greatly (and if you include the acoustic prelude it has a good buildup) and ends with a great solo riff underneath all 3 vocalists.

I hate closings that begin to fade, but don't decrease volume all the way, they just cut it off at mid volume.

some blood red throne intros are great, like the opening to unleashing hell is awsome, maybe my favorite. Unfortunatly the songs do get borring after a while.
Raining blood is the song name, Reign in blood is the cd name. But that's an amazing intro and outro because of the crazyness at the end. The beginning is just classic.
The intro to phobophile-cryptopsy is just plain awsome

he says "At my signal unleash hell")
Slayer-Raining Blood
Dying Fetus - Scum(All that coughing and stuff)
Cryptopsy - Cold Hate,Worm Blood
Cryptopsy - ...And Then It Passes[(You hear that?) and the
opening riff]
Dying Fetus - Schematics
Nile - Unas,The Slayer Of The Gods (the riff with
the acoustic guitar, which thanks to Johnmansley I
can play !)
Closings:
Dying Fetus - Scum(Take that motherfuckers!)
Nile - Ruins(the whole song as a closing to the album)
Thorns - Interface To God
Dodheimsgard - Wrapped In Plastic(same as ruins)
well most of them aren't riffs but anyway

Open Riffs:
Amon Amarth - Across the Rainbow Bridge - opening riff rules and the lyrics of the song are just so god damn awesome
At the Gates - Blinded by Fear - just a kick ass riff period
As Hope Dies - Legions Bow to a Faceless God - sweet emotion in the riff i think
Kataklysm - 1999/6661/2000 - another great riff that just gets me pumped and start banging my steering wheel while driving.
Forest of Impaled - Forward the Spears - I love songs about war and death and this song has an awesome little sound clip and then immediately puts you into the song
Amon Amarth - An Ancient Sign of Coming Storm - Great opening riff off the new Amon Amarth cd. Nice heavy shit of course
Ancient Rites - Dim Carcosa - just a nice sorrowful song and riff
Dimmu Borgir - Progencies of the Great Apocalypse - Love the riff, the song, the lyrics, it absolutely kicks ass. Orchestra is a big part of getting the mood going there
In Flames - Rerout to Remain - just cool is all
Closing Riffs:
Ancient Rites - Dim Carcosa - not all of the ending is guitar but the riff for that...
The Black Dahlia Murder - Contagion - Just a cool mean riff at the end of the song. Lyrics go with it as well which i sure as hell love to bellow
Elvenking - A Poem for the Firament - the acoustic on it is just so damn cool and peaceful. a great way to end a cd
Elvenking - Seasonsong - another acoustic that just kicks ass. not that it is hard but just sounds so sweet
GWAR - Happy Death Day - good song about school and society ha good riff to finish the cd again
I think that's it...

This is a nice tread.
I really like song openings that starts with vocals only. Not just a growl but a full line that set the tone for the main riff.
For example: Metalwrath - Amon Amarth
This opening is sick.

no not true, it doesn't start with a blastbeat, it starts with some snare rolls
i'm talking about songs like Retaliation.
and just because i don't like the intro doesn't mean i dont' like the song as a whole.

What I can think of, in no particular order.
Openings:
Dark Tranquility - Punish My Heaven (gets the song going, but doesn't sound all too raw)
Entombed - Chief Rebel Angel (both the noise and the intro riff. Especially love the noise)
Opeth - The Drapery Falls (Just a niiice build up)
Ac/Dc - Thunderstruck (sure, not metal, but it's good)
Closings:
Opeth - Deliverance
Entombed - Chief Rebel Angel (just the lovely noise again)

Vlad Tepes has made good intro for their both splits, Wladimir's March and Raven's Hike (both are actually same song, Raven's Hike is just expanded version of the other). Good war themed riff and fittes perfectly to the theme of the albums.
Other good opening/closing riffs are from Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northern Sky songs. Some of these end with a good addition riff which perforces you to listen the song again from the start, plus the atmosphere of the album is so grim and cold and with these old-school influenced riffing the album sounds marvellous.

The words 'shitty', 'boring' and 'riff' can never be uttered in the same sentence as 'At The Gates' without some kind of precursory negative.

some stuff that annoys me:
as has been said, a new riff that starts at the end, then fades out. grrr.
also, the pointless techno/industrial intros at the start of most songs of "incipit satan" by gorgoroth.
something i like is when they have an intro track thats a part of the next song. like in the case of strapping young lad, "dire" and "consequence."
anything that adds a different channel build up, like in CC's "severed head stoning" or slayers "behind the crooked cross" (that last ones a mad song )
lastly, blood dusters spoken word intros. HEEHEEHEHEHEHEHH.
"oh hey joe!!"
"hi dave"
"you did a good job in there today man!"
"thanks"
"now i dont wanna sound like a queer or nothing, but id kind of like to make love to you tonight!"

I like The Black Flame intro by Nile, it's kind of creepy but leads well into the song.

Starting at 50 seconds into the song Mr. Tinkertrain by Ozzy Osbourne (dunno if you can really consider that an opening riff, but not much happens before this part of the song, so it's basicly the intro), there's an incredibly awesome sounding riff, they only do it 3 times for some reason, but it sounds so awesome.

Opening:
Immortal - At the heart of winter, its a big long ass thing of amazingness
Slayer - Metal storm/face the slayer, in my opinion the best song slayer ever wrote, but for some reason very few people who like slayer know this song
Burzum - Dunkelheit, ambient greatness i just cant stop listening to
Emperor - I am the black wizards, builds up into probably the greatest song of all time
Graveland - The gates to the kingdom of darkness, just a great, greaat opening, thats all i can say
Mayhem - Freezing moon, its a classic, and its one of those things that is so good, you swear that you heard it somewhere before, but you really havent
Closing:
Darkthrone - Cromlech, best riff in the song is only played at the end, and its a fucking fantastic riff
Blind Guardian - Mirror, mirror, cant describe it, its just so good
Emperor - The loss and curse of reverence, another "best riff is only at the end of the song" things
Opeth - The leper affinity, weird ass piano shit

Anata - Any Kind of Magic or Miracle
Fear Factory - High Tech Hate
Behemoth - Horns ov Baphomet
Opeth - Apostle In Triumph
Closings
Pantera - 5 Minutes Alone
Dying Fetus - One Shot, One Kill

Death - Flesh and the Power it holds. The whole first two minutes is a barrage of great riffs.
Exit riffs:

My favorite opening riffs would be
The bass intro to "The God That Failed" by 'Tallica
the celtic guitar in the intro to "Hate Me!" by Children of Bodom
and the intro to "Raining Blood" by Slayer
as for Closings
The piano outro to "Closer" by NIN (which I just noticed is played as the intro to "Downward Spiral" by NIN)

Since I kept my list brief the first time, I'm going to add some more now. I'll keep this list relatively brief as well. I'll probably come back to this thread once in a while and add a new list. My favorite Iron Maiden and Monstrosity intros/outros probably deserve their own seperate lists.
Intros-
Death- Killing Spree
Exodus- Bonded by Blood
Exodus- No Love
Exodus- Parasite
Exodus- Chemi-Kill
Fates Warning- Anarchy Divine
Fates Warning- Silent Cries
Kreator- Ripping Corpse
Kreator- Pleasure to Kill
Kreator- Riot of Violence

Opening: Pain of Salvation "Iter Impius", "!", "Winning A War". Morbid Angel: Any song where an instrumental builds up to it, for instance "Inquisition (Burn With Me)" after "Dreaming".
Closing: Borknagar "Sealed Chambers of Electricity"
Not really riffs that make these special, more like the overall presentation.

Wait let me guess, it's near the end when he says "Caw! Caw! Caw! BANG! Fuck... I'm Dead!"
I haven't heard that song yet but I know that's what your talking about. I watched the movie a couple days ago when I noticed he said Fuck... I'm Dead. I was thinking, "Hey, they should use that in a song". My favorite movie ever.

No, there is some sort of brutal slashing/smashing sound with a huge groan, followed by this actor (damnit I know exactly who it is, just don't know his name) saying "Hurry up and die, will ya?" then he shoots him twice, before saying "thanks" in a rather dry fashion.
I have a feeling the movie might be THE CROW, as the actor I'm thinking of is the main bad guy in that.

That line is from The Crow I think. But they should have used the Fuck I'm Dead line after he does the funny bird hand gesture.
