Your Kit.
Tell people about your kit:
I have a Pearl Export 5 piece with a ride and a splash both situated by the hi hat which makes for fun two handed stuff on the ride and splash, I also have an Axis Longboard double pedal which is awesome!
so what do you play?

I have an old kit... It's a Tama Artstar ES but kicks ass and has nice deep toms. All my hardware and cymbals are shitty. They are... Sonar pedal, pearl hi hat stand, no name cymbal stands, no name hi hat and crash, Planet Z crash/ride, umm... That's all that I can think of but anyways my kit normally came as a 4 peice 14 inch snare, 24 bass, 12 tom tom, 16 floor tom and I through on a peice of shit Percussion plus 12 inch tom that isn't as deep for now until I can find another 13 and 10 inch Tama ES toms to put on. I have been looking for them for a year now and I only see 5 peice sets (same as mine but with 22 inch bass, I can't find 24) and they are like 800-1000 bucks for the set and I don't wan't the whole thing and have no money for the whole thing. Well I am kind of wondering off the damn subject here so I will leave it up to the next person.

I have a Pearl Export Select. 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, inch toms. 14 inch snare. 24 inch kick. Double pedal. 6 crashes, 2 cups, 4 splashes, 2 chinas, one ride and 2 hi hats. And my other drum set is a Tama Rockstar Double bass. 10 12 13 14 16 18 Inch Toms with 14 inch snare and 24 inch kicks. And I have 3 Crashes, a ride and a hi hat. Oviously my pearl is the one I play the most.

Pearl Export ELX
I have a 5 piece Pearl Export ELX, Vintage Fade with a Zildjian ZXT Rock cymbal pack. In the pack was a 20 inch ride, 16 inch crash and a pair of 14 inch hi-hats. I got a pearl 16 inch crash and a pair of Pearl hi-hats that a got from my old kit set up on my new set. I also got a beat up Zildjian ZBT 14 inch crash on my kit too. For a pedal i have a Pacific double bass pedal, nothing special. Just for kicks i mounted my ride cymbal where the small tom over the right of the bass drum would be and put that small tom on the right of my kit next to my large tom. i put the pearl hi hats next to the large toms. I have the Pearl crash and the ZBT crash on the right of my kit and the ZXT crash over the ZXT hi hats on the left.

that is an interesting setup you have, do you do sorta dream theatre esque stuff (like progressive metal) or just want to have 2 differently tuned basses for the hell of it?

A LOT of style changes mostly, I use the 22x18 a helluva lot more. The other one has the duallist on it, if you're familiar with the pedal, and I can do some interesting stuff with one foot using the double bass function on it and single pedal on the other bass drum.
It's weird but it sounds great, I'll see if I can record something sometime soon.

Oh yeah, and CHECK OUT SALUDA MIST CYMBALS!!! I could not recommend another cymbal, for metal they're just amazing, they're LOUD and they make you feel like your head is going to explode whenever you hit them, the rides especially will rip anything you hear a new a-hole. I like them a lot better than the higher-end Zildjians just because of the pingy sound they make, personally, I think they sound better than the ping rides that are specifically made for the purpose of being pingy. (I'm an advertisement for Saluda. bah. but they're nice, plus you can have plain looking pretty cymbals cause the logos come off easy)

is the dualist any good? becuase it is near impossible to get one in NZ without direct importing from the US and so I have never tried one, I have heard they are okay, but not that great, what do you think?

I know this thread is pretty old but whatever.
My Kit:
Drums: Peace 5 peice
12x10 tom
13x11 tom
16x16 floor tom
14x4 snare
22x18 bass drum
Cymbals: Sabian and Wuhan
Sabian XS20
10" splash
14" hi-hats
16" crash
18" crash
18" china
20" ride
I also have a 12" Wuhan china and an 8" Sabain B8 splash but i never use the splash.
Hardware:
I have mapex and pearl boom cymbal stands
Tama iron cobra power glide double pedal
Tama iron cobra hi-hat stand
Heads:
I have Remo Pinstripes on my tom batters, the heads that came with the kit on the other side. I usually tune my all my toms on the lower side. On my snare i have a Remo Emperor head and i tighten the head a little less than all the way up. On my bass drum i have a Evans EMAD head. Medium tuning.
Im also going to include all my specifications
I currently have my pedal springs tighened up all the way. I usually mess around with that. My beaters are about 3 inches away from my bass drum head. My pedal boards are at about medium height. Not to high, not to low. I have my toms all pretty close together. I dont keep my cymbals that high up. They are about a foot or so above my toms. My ride is realy low right above my floor tom. And i usually sit with my legs parrallel to the floor. I have a few different pairs of sticks but i mainly use 5As. Oh ya, i just got a pair of drumming isolation headphones the other day and they are pretty cool.
THE END

how do you guys tour with 30 piece drumsets?, and how long is the set up time?
i got a 3 piece drumset 24" bass 14"tom 70's ludwig clear vista lite 13" pearl piccolo snare<that guitar center 100 buck deal as advertised in those annoying catalogues>
check this out, dual 20" zil hi-hat<thier old and kinda wasted> and 20" zil ride cymbal<soon to be replaced by a 30"+ gong that im gonna drill a hole in the center and mount to a stand as soon as i get my hands on one>
axis single pedal, i use 5b zil sticks that look the same on both ends, absolute rock i think thier called
sets up in 5 minutes, breaks down all inside the bass drum, i ask this coz ive only been on the road in old toyo vans and minivans, i only take whats necessary, i couldnt imagine setting up a drum or cymbal i may only hit a few times as my band suffers being cramped day in day out in the rear with the gear

I will be posting piccies of my new kit setup soon,
as for setting up large kits, I set it up before I get on stage, and carry it out with 2 bass drums with my rack toms on them, my 2 floor toma and my snare and then my cymbals, since I do this almost instantly the other band comes off and I get everyone to help me it takes about 5 mins to set up, that includes tinker time and drum check/wanking off time.
I am looking to get a drum carpet with bass drum, pedal and everything else's position marked on to aid drum setup.
as for moving it around, my shitty old honda civic has enough space for all of my kit, so I just take that on 'tour' (which is to the various pubs and back that we play at) everyone else takes their own cars and we fit all our gear in 3 cars and then cruise to the gigs.

ive just noticed over the years most drummers<but not all, some people are very effecient> with huge sets take way too long setting up and breaking down and frequently someone on the line up suffers for it, the telltale sign is when they are thru the dude starts unscrewing his cymbal stands, intending to breakdown entirely from the stage, sometimes they have to coz there aint room, thats just something im very concious about, i'd own a terry bozzio/neil pert style kit if i could, id just hate to lug those sets around
also loading/unloading can be dangerous when youre outta town, it has been for me, i can carry my entire drumset in one run minus the rug<i use a golf bag for my stands>. and since im last to load in at the end of the night and sometimes alone, im the guy dealing with the drunks, the crackheads, watching meatheads trying to kill one another in close proximity to me locking up and securing thousands of dollars in gear, and i want that time to be as short as possible. i ve seen bands draw diagrams of thier load in, and follow it to a tee, everything is placed preciesly, i used to own a big kit myself, these situations have just caused me to slim it down

I think theire better as some zildjian (A custom crashes).
Really nice crashes and hi hat, but I dont like their Rides.
And theire much cheaper as the most other same quality cymbals.

NZ, your kit looks awesome. You have your hi-hat positioned weird. How do you play with it back that far?

I´m playing like that too it´s the Curse of a fucking "four Hightom" set...;P
So I´m playing the Hi hat most time with my left hand...(on harder speeds), that means I have to spend a lot of time to put the smallest High tom in the right direction.

I play the hi hat on the other side of the hat, if that makes sense, I also have another hi hat on my right, which I use alot, and I have it there so that when a blast (I do it open handed) it is comfy.

i just went to this shop to see about getting replacement parts on my vistalites.........dudes, theres only one factory left that has the proper tooling machines and has mass producing capacity on the ludwig vistalites in the world......and it is in conneticut, about a hundred miles from where i live. this place is the one source for the whole ludwig re-issue of vistalites, something as simple as a a tom mount can be like 150-200 bucks, lug mounts, bass legs all hundreds of dollars, the sets themselves start at 4,000 bucks and up, i thought id pay like 20 bucks for a new mount, fuck that.
im gonna drive down there and 1>apply for a job<and like the johnny cash song steal me a set, one piece at a time slowly over years>
or 2 go thru thier dumpsters, see what they throw out, if its good, raid that shit regularly
i agree, drum gear is expensive

how do the Gretsch kits sound? I have only played on a crappy school one, and I remember back in the Jazz days they were sorta like Pearl and tama are now (along with ludwig) and if I am not mistaken the CoF drummer (adrian someone) is sponsored by them.

My kit is a custom job built for me by these dudes and I love it. It may not be a well known make, but it's got all the deep warmth I expect from kits costing 3 times this amount. It consists of:
8" rack tom
10" rack tom
12" rack tom
13" rack tom (that I don't always use, because all the rest go up in nice, even 2" steps)
14" rack tom
16" floor tom
2 X 22" kick drums
Yamaha 14" X 5.5" metal snare (I don't like the wooden 6" deep one that I bought with the kit)
All Sabian Pro Sonix cymbals apart from one shitty Stagg 18" china.
All Drumworlduk's own hardware and pedals which, by the way, is all fucking BRILLIANT and I'd recommend it to anyone.
The only thing I'd like to get to improve it is a bigger floor tom (18" or maybe even 20") and a nice rack. The stands I use now are top quality, but time consuming to set up and break down all the time.

I bet I've got the lamest kit out of anyone. I'm not really a drummer--though I can play pretty good. But I'm very limited on my set. When I bought the set (in pieces) I only got the necessary parts: bass, snare, crash, highhat. Imagine trying to jam with that! And the parts are pure shit anyway. My highhat pedal broke off, so I have to keep it slightly open all the time (kind of that Pantera loose-but-not-open sound). I've got two crash cymbals (I can only use one at a time though--with the pole coming up from my bass) and both of them are filthy and nearly dead. And the bass and snare sound kind of cheesy. So you can imagine how pumped I am when I'm with someone who has a full drum set. The only thing worse than what I've got in just sticks and a few cardboard boxes! I'm ashamed...

on one of them he did,the drumming was very slow and basic
it was obvious he recorded the guitar first then synched the drums, its very unusual and hard

yeah, i havent really heard much burzum, not all the albums, and from what hear the guy denounced metal and went synth or something. and i didnt catch the sarcasm of the smiley heads, so sue me. i thought it was wierd he recorded the stuff i heard guitar first which is alot harder than drums first, i used to syncronize this way on a 4 track,i usually would mangle up the tempo, thats why synchronized recordings are drums first
im gonna list upgrades i want for my kit
better picallo
kevlar heads for all drums
24" ride or bigger
longboard upgrade
back to small frisbie like hihats for now<my rides have all cracked lately>
one circular blade put above the hihat
looking for used vistalite floor tom to complete kit
i may change the mount system for the vistalite, i hate rail mounts, never understood why they made them in the first place

Why do you want a 24"+ ride? I would only get up to a 21" or so because i like playing the bell. I think i might get another ride and put it near my hi-hat.

exacrator, the sound is deep, shimmers loud, you should still get the ping sound on the bell, i'd have to try a potential 24 to see ultimately, the different makes of them definately ranged thier attributes, like any cymbal i guess. theres a drummer in my area who uses one, relatively new, ziljian, it sounds great in my opinion, looks fuggin cool as hell. ive seen alot of 2 rides on both sides of drumkits lately, i think thats cause people are using more open arm sticking<especially blasts> and left hand lead stuff nowadays and still want to left hand to strike a ride cymbal, its like a 50/50 ratio on who crosses sticks and who dont. i like to cross myself.
cannibal, a good friend of mine simultaniously plays a synth and drums in a band, they arent a metal band but it definately cool to watch, and they're good

My drummer (I play his set all the time ) has a Pacific CX (made by DW) in black diamond pearl, 10", 12" 14" rack and 16" floor toms, matching 14"x5" snare. for Cymbals, Sabian AAXplosion 15" Crash, Zildjian A Medium 16" crash, Zildjian Z Custom 16" crash, Zildjian A Custom 10" splash, Zildjian Zil-Bel, Sabian B8 hi hats and ride (soon to be replaced with Zildjian Z custom hi hats, and a Mega Bell ride). Has a Pearl Powershifter double pedal. The major downfall of the kit is he has no China........I keep ragging on him to get one...so hopefully soon.
Lick The Wound.......about a year ago my old band was supposed to play a show with you guys in Syracuse but the band broke up...we were a Death Metal band from Rome/Utica area..
DRAGON FORCE IS AWESOME!!!

My kit. Its nothing much but whatever. Im getting a new 7 peice as soon as this sells. Which will hopfully be within a week. Haha, you can see a muscle chart in the background.
Another view. Wow, i just realized how gay that room looks. Its like 10x10 down there. It was just a storage room down in my basement but i guess it makes an ok band room.

Haha... It has 2 bass drums, 2 rack toms, and 2 floor toms, and a snare. It's going to kick so much ass. Ive never played on a double bass kit before sadly...and after over 3 and a half years of playing . Im kind of sick of playing double pedals. The slave pedals always feel horrible. Well, axis did a good job with their double pedals. The no backlash design. But yeah, like i said, i'll post pics after i get everything set up. It should be at my house by at least friday. I cant wait! Oh yeah, it doesnt come with the hi-hat to bass drum connector so im going to have to go a week or so without one. I'll finally get to see what it was like for you, haha.

yeah I would highly advise getting one, it improves the setup ALOT, no more unsightly hi hat reaching. as for playing double bass kits, they are soooooo much better, so much better feel, etc. I love playing double bass.

Yes, it is going to be here on friday if everything goes well . It doesn't come with a drum throne so im going to have to find an alternative. If i can find something that will work fine, im going to save up and buy a nice $130 bike seat throne but if i cant find anything, im just going to get a cheap $30 one this weekend. I will see.

Since I spend more money on my guitar and amps... This is all I've got:
- Tama Swingstar kit (with a Remo skin on the snare, saving up for new tomskins).
- Tama twinpedal (not ICs though, but hell, I'm saving up for either IC or Axis).
- Paiste 502 16"
- Sabian HHX Evolution set (16", 14" hihat, 20" ride)
Meh.

actually my main focus is this minimalist doom/sludge band
lots of mid tempo double bass roll beats, im still getting the hang of the double pedal and this project is excellent for learning.

My new setup
I've been fucking around with setup loads lately trying to forget all the cliched setups and go for what's comfortable. I'm not sure this is it still, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting there.
The hi-hat on the left (normal place) is just an X-hat, and the other one is an Eliminator cable job. The toms are 10", 12" (rack) and 14" and 16" (floor). I'd prefer 16" + 18" floor toms, but this is nice for now. I normally play with 2 kicks, but we're recording soon, so I'm trying to get used to using the double pedal again. I've got loads more cymbals and 8" and 13" rack toms, but the way it is now is pretty intuitive and much easier to haul around everywhere. I just sat down and played and played one day and took note of which toms and cymbals I use in every song, and these are they.
Rack is next on the Christmas list.

Well, they're almost all Sabian Pro Sonix, but as you can see I've got a 16" XS crash on the left, and a 10" Rogers splash. The others are a 16" Pro Sonix crash, an 18" Pro Sonix china and a 20" Pro sonix ride which I LOVE. I normally use a Pro Sonix 8" splash and an 18" Pro Sonix crash/ride, but I'm still unsure about how well they all fit into the setup, plus they need so many stands to hold them all up I fill most stages by myself. MUST GET A RACK!! The hats on the X-hat are some god-awful Pearl bargain-basement things that I'll ditch as soon as I can, and the 14" Pro sonix hats on the remote thing are ancient and scabby as hell, but they do sound good.
Cheers for looking.
