I see a lot of girls play basses in bands...Why bass over guitar...wouldn't it be easier to play a guitar because of hand size? I know i struggle at times because I don't exactly have mammoth size hands...

I dont mind female bassists. It puts some variety in the field of music, like Sean Yseult from White Zombie or well, I cant think of any from the top of my head. Maybe if they have a big rack, then its +2 bonus.

the truth of the matter is you won't find a female who can play bass as aggressive as a guy. yeah there sweet to look at during a show but when it comes to brutality there just not hardwired for it. my opnion. if you know of one clue me in, i'd love to see her shred.

My opinion on female bassists - Why are they any different to male bassists? A musician isnt a male only job. Female bassists can be just as good anyday. Although none that I know come close to Slave or Alex.

I havent heard any great female bassist's,they all seem to be mainstream and play easy riffs,but yeah they are no different to guys,but more guys seem to play.

Sorry for the off-topic ness but the last time I heard the word 'shred' (well the last time before this thread), I thought all it meant was playing something that is very fast and at least somewhat technical. By those criteria, you can shred on any guitar, regardless of the octave and number of strings. This whole "you cannot shred on bass" thing is confusing me.

You need to listen to Jason Becker. Once you do, you will realize why it's impossible to shred on a bass. Even if you don't care, listen to him anyway. It's good stuff, I tells ya.

As a newbie to this forum and a female metal bassist at that, hope you don't mind if I have a say.. Agreed there are stuff all quality female bass players esp in the metal arena but on the rare occasion we do pop up we're never given the credit we deserve. I've played bass in death/thrash and black metal bands for years now, mostly finger picking although I am faster at tremming with a pick. No metronomes for me and yeah I fully mosh out on stage. Its always been a issue whenever Ive auditioned for metal bands coz guys are like 'oh chicks can't play for shit' well I proved them all wrong everytime. I have moved onto a progressive metal band for now but so long as i have both hands I will play metal on my bass with as much vengence and brutal force as any guy!!

I don't really see any difference. I'm a girl, I play bass, and I figure I do an alright job. The point is that there aren't many notable female metal bassists due to lack of females in metal in general.

It's quite a pity that even the good female bassists will mostly be underrated and rejected just because of their sex. I really cannot see why so many guys see females as less worthy, even without having seen or heard them play. One should not define someone by his or her sex, but by his or her skills, and any good bassist will gain my immediate respect, male or female.
So ladies, I am glad you stand up to your rights, and show the guys you can kick ass on bass as well.
