My opinion is that if a chick plays as good as a guy, she's better, because she's "lookable" too. (Yeah, I know, we guys are stoopid....) However, I do have lower hopes when I see that a girl is supposed to do something, quite simply because too many of the girls I see doing stuff are not as good as the guys who get my attention.
But practice, and you'll be good, and I wont care that you're a girl.

When it comes to playing bass, it shouldn't matter if you're an innee or outee. Look at Jo bench from Bolt Thrower, she can keep up the pace, and then some.

Chalice have a female vocalist and flute player, one looked like a total slut, the other sounded so bad i wanted to throw a full stubbie at the bitch, another Ausie band that has a female bass player is Daysend, but they play weird crossover stuff and she looks like a skeleton with skin
and back to the lass from Bolt Thrower, im making the point that a female can be a bass player in a band and not have it as some kind of gimick AND play good metal

yeah i think the question was more about the playing and the looks of the bass player, but when you really think about it, when your listening to the CD or something, are you popping a chubby just because you know that its a girl playing bass?
who cares, im damn sure there is alot of good girl bassists, hell my ex was great on bass. Also, if your going to the concerts just to see a chick with the bass, your going for the wrong reason man

There are probably some very talented female bassists but the odds they play in a metal band really lower the numbers. I don't really have anything new to add to this thread, I might have mentioned Talena (is Kittie still a band btw?), and although this isn't metal, D'arcy from Smashing Pumpkins is an interesting bassist. Not that any of their music is really talented, but still interesting. She uses a pick.
One disadvantage females might have is being on average smaller than men, but then again some really small bassists do their job quite well so it shouldn't be too much of a setback.

i'm a female bass player !
and i guess i play fairly well,i play with3 bands and do a lot of the singing,1 is fender bender and its r&r and 2nd is stark ravin mad and we play metal and rock and 3rd is thunder and we do lite rock and new country,,yes i play for aliving and have played for 13 years and when looks were passed around they must have thrown a whole lot at me,cause everybody says so. i think its good that we have some bass lady's for those that do play i think most of us kickass on bass

Its not only bass, theres just not that many girls playing anything in music. Theres like 5 guitar players for every one bass player, and 90% of them are probably guys.

There aren't many who are more talented than him, but there are tons who can compose better. Victor is a true gem when he is improving, which is what makes Béla Fleck & The Flecktone shows so fun to go to. He reminds me alot of Felix Pastorius, someone who has the skills but can't write the music.
Billy Sheehan (2 handed tapping goodness) examples: this, 7718 (3a17), and Shy Boy.
Michael Manring (most heard unknown player, he is part of everything) examples: Disturbed, La Sagrada Familia, Book of Lies.
Stanley Clarke (Need I say more?) examples: School Days, Lopsy Lu, Goodbye Pork-Pie Hat (Live at the Greek).
Alan Caron (Funkiest Canadian ever) examples: Pac-man, D-code, Trouble.
Jonas Hellborg (His work in the Mahavishnu Orchestra was good alone; his solo career has been amazing though) examples: It's The Pits (Slight Return), Rag B B, Vehicle.
I enjoy Victor alot, I have seen him live twice, and have most of his CD's. When it comes down to it though, he lacks in writing songs.

I think most of his songs are pretty good actually. there weird but theyre full of bass riffs and techniques, and ive downloaded them billy sheehan solo mp3's ages ago, off his website, there very good! some insane stuff, with a p bass! all the tapping and harmonics and tapped harmonics at speed, but i just prefer victor cos of the slapping technique and the groove.
some good points tho.

Our band also played with them last week.. wow, what an oppurtunity, she's very pretty, has a nice ass, but she does sound a little bit like brody armstrong from the distillers..

Well i just saw this topic and thought I would add some shit for the hell of it since I've never posted here before lol......First things first.....anyone who says females cant play bass (or any instrument) as good as males are full of shit! I have met plenty of girls and women who can play bass and other instruments awesome. And I don't think anybody mentioned 'Melissa Auf der Maur'....she is a decent bass player I suppose, she sings really well....and not that looks matter....but she is SMOKING HOT!!! damn i love redheads lol......a redhead that plays bass, what more could a guy ask for? lol.....anyways heres her website where theres like tons of photo galleries n' shit.

To ignore most of the thread and just answer the question originally placed, I say no. Not no as in, "no, women can never be as good as men at bass", just no as in "no, I've never heard a woman bassist that could compete with the better male bassists".
The best female bassists I've ever heard were the lady in Bolt Thrower and the lady from White Zombie around 88-91. Never of them are nearly as good as guys like Doug Keyser (Watchtower), Tony Choy (Atheist, Cynic, Pestilence), Sean Malone (Cynic), Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Death, and tons of other bands I don't really listen to), Jim Sheppard (Nevermore), or Allen Price (Deadhorse), just to name a few. Obviously it's possible, you'd just need to really work at it and get lucky. I'd imagine the largest handicap to overcome is the fact that most women have considerably smaller hands than men, which would obviously make it harder to play great bass. There's an old cliched saying, and one that rings at least partially true, in general if not literally- practice makes perfect.
