Nile tune down so low for reasons other than heaviness. Like the range of the vocalists. Consider the fact that the first metal guitarist to tune down (Tony Iommi, to C#) did so because his singer's voice couldn't go high enough. Your tuning should reflect more than desire to be heavy, because, as noted, you don't get much heavier than D or C no matter how low down you tune.
I'm usually in standard, Eb, or D. With the limited materials at my disposal I can't do much else. Occasionally I'll use one of the open tunings I know from Zeppelin songs, but not often.

Nope. Nylon strings don't put enough tention on the neck anyway. I have a classical guitar with nylon strings and it doesn't have a truss rod 'cause it isn't needed. Just don't ever put metal strings on a guitar built for nylon strings or else your guitar will implode

I've had the same classical guitar for more than 1 and a 1/2 years and it's had the same strings and they haven't broken once, that probably explains why.

Have you heard how low Karl Sanders' vocals are? Listen to the intro to The Black Flame - tuning to anything other than A (or B at a push) simply would not match up with the vocals.

sorry, little off topic...
D-players, what kind of strings do you use? I'll buy some thicker ones soon for my Ltd, I was thinking of .10-.52 or .10-.46... Don't want too thick, I like to play every string fast, but can you play the higher-e-string (well in this case higher-d) fast for soloing and such even with a .52?

I used to use .11's, but I had to keep it in standard tuning for my band so i just said so what if i can't perfectly imitate low tunings and went back to .10s.

for D, i now use 0.10s
earlier it was 0.08s (which heck i also used for C )...then changed to 0.09-0.08 hybrid (string 1,2,3 of 0.08 gauge).
now its 0.10-0.09 hybrid...the 0.09s make it easier while soloing

Exactly my situation. I'm too much of a noob to convert tabs in other tunings to standard, so I just go grab a GuitarPro tab and switch the tabs to standard tunings(although most of the time that fucks up the tab).

Because when you play live you only get half the heaviness of two guitars and there is no scope for incorporating harmonized guitar parts and also solos with the correct/relevant backing. Pretty simple.

That's a pretty limited view of the scope of things guitars can accomplish. They can even do things that aren't heavy.

I like the strings all loose so i can bend easier and
it's real heavy and low.
Eb only when we cover Metallica, Black Sabbath,
and Iron Maiden,etc.

Sabbath tunes to C# starting with Master of Reality. I don't think Maiden or Metallica tuned to Eb regularly, though I'm almost always in Eb when playing them. Slayer's always been Eb though, and god love them for it.

Half step down or Eb tuning is standard tuning but every thing sounds 1 fret lower. Normal standard concert pitch is 440Hz A but Eb is 415Hz A. Basically, if tuned to standard then tune one string 1 fret lower and from that one string that is 1 fret lower retune the rest of the strings to it.

I have a question:
Will a set of 11's tuned in D have a similar tension of 10's tuned in E???

I really dont know. It's just a number game when it comes to guessing tention on different string gauges. I would gueass that it might be close, but I would have to try it out first in order to discover the properties of string tention vs string gauge.

they also used Eb on st. anger, a waste of effort, as well as Drop C and drop A, and a funny seven string tuning that i cant remember off hand.

The fact that you know what tuning new Metallica uses further emphasises that you are a stupid christian bitch.... do everyone a favour and fuck off you overly aggressive cunt.

Aside from that, your post was useless. Nobody here cares what Metallica tunes to anymore. Yelling at somebody who's already been gently corrected with the loving touch only metalheads bring is pointless, and will contribute to your useless antagonism to this site.

That's for a 7-string. Six-string drop A is A E A D F# B.

so is D tuning correctly said Standard tuning, 1 step down
B tuning must be Standard tuning, 2.5 steps down
how many times has the latter notation been used in this thread?
|
D tuning? you mean drop D or D standard? two totally different things... D standard has all of the strings in standard E tuning tuned down one step and is commonly reffered to as D standard.
drop d is standard E with the low E tuned down a step to D, with all other strings the same..
technically drop C is standard E with only the low E tuned down two whole steps.
but many people will commonly reffer drop D down a step as drop C... even though it isnt exactly correct, just common terminology.
B tuning CAN be called E standard tuned down two and a half steps, but for the ease of things it's usually called B standard.

First off, there is a character used in the english language to punctuate sentences. It is called a question mark, aptly named as it indicates that a question is being asked. It looks like this: '?'. Now use it bitch.
Yes, I wouldn't mind a hug, but not from you or any other christian childraper. Now go do what you're good at, putting rubber tyres around black peoples heads and setting them on fire.
And to innardsdecay, on some old metallica songs they use drop D. One that I can think of is 'The Thing That Should Not Be' off Master of Puppets.

I'm interested as to how exactly you reconcile your use of profanity and virulent and obstreperous behaviour with your beliefs in a Christian ideaology that is predicated upon conventional morals and values.

My favourite tuning is standard probaly, because most songs I play are in standard.... but I like to play a whole step down for stuff like children of bodom!

Drop D & B, C#, and standard.
C#: because it's really raw, it something you can have you distortion pedal on, and crank it up, and it sounding dark
Drop D: It's an alternative, and is a good one. Plenty of bands (one of them being Rammstein) uses this turning constantly.
Drop B: A bit down from D, and is just great
Standard: It's just standard...but it still has it's feels

this is a little off topic but... has anyone used power-bright strings? I just put a .10 - .50 power-bright set of strings on my guitar today and WOW it sounds a lot better than it did with d'addario .10 - .46.

I have used them, I didn't really like them that much. I prefer smaller strings, like .9 - .42 or for droped C i use .10 - .46. I think i might try playing in droped C with some .9s.
