Not often. I used to about 5 or 6 hours a day, lately, maybe twice a week for an hour.

Normally I practice atleast an hour a day when I have the time, but the last 2 weeks I hardly ever touched a guitar. I'm planning to start practicing again this weekend.

Yeah, lately I've only been having one 3-4 hour practise session a week. I want to practise more but unfortunately for me, I simply don't have the time.

At least 1 hour a day. But I use to play guitar instead of sleeping, so I use to play 4-5 hours a day.

Whenever I get the urge really, whenever I can be bothered. Probably not the best way to improve your abilities but I don't want playing my guitar to just be another chore, I just play when I'm in the mood, sometimes I don't play for days, other days I play for hours.

i usually practice scales/lead exercises for about an hour each day. but i play all the time. when i whach T.V. and shit. when i get high i like to play.(thats all the fuckin time! ) and usually i just pick up the guitar for at least an hour just to jam out some songs standing up. you got to practice standing up alot. thats something i didn't realise when i first started to play.

i found that too panterica about standing up, i never tried till the other day and i was like 'woah, wtf? this is dumb!'. but yeah i dont usually practice so to speak. i learn a song every now and then, but otherwise im just sitting watching t.v. or chatting or fiddling with the amp just doing crap [all of this while simply playing casually with the guitar]. BUT - just doing this i realise i get better. i think back to like fortnghts and months and think hey ive gotten that bit better.
so there you go :P

At least 2 hours a day. More on the weekend. And even more during summer break. I pretty much only play standing up because whats the use of getting good at guitar but you can't play for shit when your'e standing up.

If I have a lot of things to do then I'll try to get at the very least a half hour of practice in. Somedays, guitar is all I do all day. Those days kick ass

I try to play the whole setlist of our band every day. But the enthusiasm of this "everyday the same" gets low. Then i try to create new songs.
But it's just about one hour a day and it's not real practising. So that may explain why i'm not getting better, although i play for some years.

i play for prolly 3 hours a day , ill just be sitting on my computer and be like "dude , i didnt know i had a guitar!" and start playin ,this happens abotu every 30 minutes . playing standing up is easier for me , use to be harder but all these months standing up pulloffs and hammerons seem easier. ive only been playing for almost a year so maybe that's why i play a little more . dont know , plus i have about 10 hours on my hands. also im getting to the point where i can just jam and make up shit as i go so its funner

When I play I usually stick on a slayer minidisc i compiled with 30 songs i can play on it. Some I have smooth, but others are a bit sloppy. I put it on random and just play through it, the easier ones are like breaks, and you gradually get better at the sloppy ones.
I dont practice scales or exercises any more - i don't have the motivation/time to do alot more with my guitar playing. i spend more of my free time juggling these days. Go circus boy!

Practising more would be so much easier without school, friends, and all this other shit. If i could i would go 5 hours a day but im lucky to get 1 in.

I practice a minimum of 1.5 hours a day. Plenty more on the weekends. There are so many things to learn out there. I feel like I waste a day if I don't practice. I practice all the time standing up. (except for those 3-5 hour sessions.

1-2 hours a day for me generally. 30-60 mins of real practice.. tough licks im not fast enough on yet, chromatics with the metronome, sweeps, etc.. pretty much just metronome work for an hour a day to build chops. another 30-60 minutes playing new and old songs for fun.

I mostly play about an hour a day but lately i haven't been doing that due to exams and spending a lot of time at the gym. Anyways i usually just practice scales and learn new ones, and then i'll piss around with them and perhaps solo over a backing track, then i'll play some songs and then carry on trying to learn Symbolic (the whole album) by Death.

I don't really practice on a set schedule. If I'm watching TV I'll bust out my SG and do some scales and chromatic exercises. Most of the time I play when I'm inspired and try to write new stuff.

Dont practive 5 hours strait, thats just stupid. Break it down. Practicing 5 hours strait wont help you much unless you plan everything out like what scale your gonna practice, what song you wanna try and nail ect...

yea cause other things will get in the way, and youll get "guitard out" it wont be fun any more that what playing is all about is having fun not spending countless hours just so you can play better then some other guy

Hummm, I usually play guitar throughout the day, but instead of just bunching it up in one 5 hour long session, i play for like an hour and then piss about with something else for a while and then back to guitar, learning "Masturbating The War God" by Nile ATM, gods but the solo is solid.
Hummm, scales is were i'm going wrong though, i've never bothered learning any, I should be beaten.

Not too much. I play in a band every few weeks (4 hours or more) and I have guitar lessons (1 houre) every week. I don't play often aside from that since it gives my phrasing a chance to breath. I usually play when I want to learn a song or I'm using guitar pro. I do a lot musically other than that though so I still keep pretty fresh.

It all depends on what it is to you. To me it's a hobby and I practice when I want and only care about how good I am, not anybody else.

I used to practise for 1-2 hours a day
but the last 2 months I don't practise
at all cause I don't play in a band(and probably never will)
nor can I record my stuff with my computer(the sound I
get is too bad).I'm kind of disappointed

i play in a band, we practice twice a week for 3 hours. we can sound good together but we need to work on writing songs that don't do the, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-end thing. too simplistic. as for solo practice, i practice everyday but like someone mentioned earlier i tend just to practice randomly through the day. i find that more enjoyable and less frustrating than just sitting down and practicing for like 3 hours in one sitting

in my band, if we don't practice twice a day then we usually practice once a day.... other than that, i occasionally practice on my own. and every week i have private lessons(i'm still taking em' but this dude is soooo good).
insomnia is what allows all of this.

I have been playing 3 hours a day for the last month or so, and my playing has improved dramatically. I doubt it will last too much longer.
Yea, people don't ususlly like old threads dug up, but this one may slide, I dunno.

This was an OK revival in my book.
Anyway, the last time I managed to sit down and practise was two weeks ago and even then for only an hour and a half. Such is life, unfortunately.

I play for about an hour a day in weekd-days.
In the weekends I play about 3-4-5 hours, most of them is either practicing or making up riffs or leads.
In the weekends I also practice playing with distortion, and practice playing with different effects. Most of my playing these days is on my acoustic guitar.
How do you guys feel about practicing, playing with distortion. I feel like it is also something you have to practice and learn. It is not the same as playing without.

I play for about 2 hours a day
I practise about 4-5 hours a day generally between 1am and 6am
Been doing this for the last 2 months or so and my playing has got a lot better.
My practise regime is like this:
Warm up exercises : accending and decending 1-2-3 2-3-4 etc until I am at about 170 bpm (then using 4 fingers, string skipping, different fingerings etc)
get speed up in my strict alternate picking playing plug in baby by muse.
Modes, Scales, Theory
Sweep picking ( i am truly awful)
4 note runs
Finger stretching Legato runs
Attempt to play the cool ravenous solo and fail (can play it all but not at speed apart from the last decending part)
Play some bodom stuff
Tremolo Picking
Two hand tapping
Go through it all again
Sleep
Until i have that ravenous solo nailed and my picking is exceeding 200 bpm in almost everything i do then i will calm it down a bit. I normally play clean so i can hear mistakes - distortion can hide them.
Maybe I am quite sad but of the few times i do go out to parties etc, I normally end up thinking i am wasting a night of sweep picking. Sad i know

You will have a great life one day as a guitar god if you keep practicing like that. It's a hard life to live at the moment, I'm sure, but it will pay off big time in the future. I would think in a few yaers at least.
Push hard brother And have some fun too.

Most of the time i get bored and go play for 20 mins-30 mins 5-6 times a day. Usually depends if i have learnt anything interesting that needs work, or if i have found something interesting that need learning.
Some times ill play for like 2 hours if i feel the need.

but other than that i guess 1-2 huors but more if im trying to learn a song or in the process of making up a riff

Thats pretty much the same here... it's great having a teacher who is into the same style of music that you want to play. My first teacher used to tell me what songs I would learn, and it was all crap that I wasn't interested in so the motivation wasn't there.

Hi, I'm new here to the Metaltabs forum.
I probably practice an hour at least everyday. Not necessarily proper practice, I just stuff around. Every so often I do some theory.

I practice from 0minutes to 2-3hrs a day on and off. I don't have anything set...I'll practice some songs or try to learn new stuff. I also just fuck around and sometimes come up with something I like and keep going with that.

i find the best way to improve playing is by playing with other musicians. We normally just jam for 3-4 hours once a week and even just played gigs with jamming sessions (made a dialogue and just went from there). Each time we played we just chose a scale and a tuning and went with it. From improvising like that you learn to appreciate the need for other musicians. I could wank on guitar all day and night but it means nothing if you can't play with other people.
In an earlier thread i talked about practising 4-5 hours a day. I did that for 2 months but now i have a job i only play for about 2-3 hours. There is a huge difference from making riffs and practising. My songwriting goes to shit if i don't play with other musicians, and while i can play with the best of them, that at the end of the day is the most important thing.
Listening to Nile makes me want to chop my guitar up into firewood and piss the flames out. Hopefully one day i will do the same for someone else

I made a regimen for the summer which i try my best doing. It calls for 10 hours, i achieved that for at least 17 days this summer, but we been moving. You won't find me playing less than 6 hours a day, almost ever. I have an hour for everything, and there is the regiman on the back of my guitar notebook. And this is what is basically is:
1 1/2 - Learn New scale everyday, and perfect the previous one the day before, i am not going to lie, i have been not keeping up with this hour as much as i should.
1 - Chords- i just like put on the metronome and play through alot of chord inversions, this summer it consisted alot of all the 7th chords, and i know over 60 places of where to play 7th chords on the fretboard from this hour.
1 - Exercises - i always always always make up my own, because doing that really pushes my limits and makes me be more innovative in general. I have the metronome, and i just pick a goal thats extremely hard, and get it done, no matter what, often i go over the time limit with odd ones. (try double picking each note of a scale, but do them in triplets, and accent on the beat, much hard then it looks, the last thing i conquered which used up the whole hour)
1+ - Musical meditation - dont make fun of me for the name, this is where i probably gain the most from. I pick something i need to work on, like vibrato, and sit there an consentrate on what i am doing for an hour plus straight. I have gotten pretty good at this, and now the hour often turns into an hour and a half becuase you seriously dont even realize.
1 1/2 - music writing - the most important aspect of music. I just come up with the most creative ideas that i can, and thats at times a drawback, cause my ideas sometimes arent expanded upon to be a song, but they always turn up later.
1 - Ear training - another hour that is often skipped because i forget how important it is. Its probably the second most important to music writing, because i feel making music is done so others and you can LISTEN to it, i try to make my ears as good as possible to be a accomplished listener, and get the ideas i have in my head out easier.
1 - Song learning - This hour is often skipped, because i find it less and less important to play others songs, but i am working on Tender Surrender to make a perfect track of it. You guys can play as fast as you want, and may think that is the hardest, but to appropriately copy and mimick Steve Vai and others like him (not many) is probably one of the hardest things you can do by any artist.
1 - Classical guitar - Whatever my classical teacher assignes.
1+ - Jamming - just me playing while watchin tv, or on the computer, i made up a regiman where the guitar is pretty much in my hands at all times, so really i probably have the guitar in my hands for way past 10 hours everyday, but they are just exercises to keep my accuracy up with legato exercises.
(This regiman fluctuates depending on my schedule, this often goes to be less, but i have had days that have easily reached 15 hours of FOCUSED playing, and you can practice for all 24 hours of the day everyday, but if your not focused it dont mean shit)
I know this regimen may be a little extreme and alot of you probably dont believe it and just think i am just making myself look better, but i know how much i practice, and how it shows will be the important part. I dont do it so other people think i am a hard worker, i do it for the results i want. . . to be an accomplished guitarist as any of you want to be as well.
Edit: Sorry for my long replies people, i just get going, and dont feel like erasing any of it

all i can say is a credit to you!
i agree with you about learning other styles in your practise time - i learn flamenco and classical on alternate days to give me different solo ideas
keep it up! you will be more then accomplished!

If you play for 10 hours I dont think thats much of a problem. Tremendous dedication you have. i play for around 2-4 hours but some days i dont fit any in.
