death metal was in full swing by 1990. effigy of the forgotten was unleashed in 1991, pantera sounds like j pop in comparison

How could I forget to mention Satyricon? These guys have thrown a very weird light on black metal for their last two albums (Rebel Extravaganza & Volcano) & are seriously original. Love 'em.
But my vote still rests with Gwar.

I hate the new Satyricon with a passion I usually only hold for Hammerfall and Manowar.
Gwar are original in stage show, but the music is nothing special.

That makes me a saaad panda. I think they're the greatest band to ever exist. But yeah, it's certainly not for everyone. They're a little odd.

Eh? They've not exactly done a great deal of techno. As in, I've heard one song & I've got all of their LPs. But anyway, yay for people liking Satyricon!

It's hard to say between Atheist, Cynic, and Watchtower. I like some other bands more than those three (i.e. Suffocation, Malevolent Creation, Forbidden, etc.), but I'd be hard pressed to argue that they aren't the most original. San Antonio Slayer stick out, too, they were playing super technical shit way back when everybody else was either playing semi-technical speed metal or lame ass hair metal.

Atheist drumming really sets them apart from everyone else.
two other original bands: At The Gates early days (there was no melodic death back then, so they pretty much invented the genre) and Entombed when they began the "Death Rock" thing.

Yes they did. Some ex-members formed another project called aghora. Althought it doesn't sound like cynic with their female vocalist, aghora is still pretty good.

Sounded nothing like them. Far more technical and brutal than both. Much better band.

I would say Obituary is pretty original, like someone posted earlier. Their stuff isn't over the top crazy, but you know who is playing as soon as you hear a couple of notes, and no one sounded like that from late 80's-early to mid-90's that I am aware of. The most original album I ever heard (and still think is) Sepultura's Chaos AD. I would say they are the most original band, but if you look at their work as a whole, some of the early stuff wasn't very original. Oh and KMFDM, no one sounds like 'em but you can't really call that metal.

hmm my 2 cents, well i do like nothingface in the metalcore area, but i have heard it before.
stuff i feel is original, opeth, and dream theater have already been mentioned so i'll leave those out, they go without saying anyway. and black sabbath was original considering alot of what we listen to know is because of them
anyway my choices would be
amorphis - i have yet to hear a truly similar sound
battlelore - yeah we've heard the power or viking stuff before but this def doesnt sound like BG or rhapsody etc etc. esp. with the new album
power symphony - never really heard a female singer do power metal before, at least not exclusively, i thought that was pretty cool

I have to agree. When they came out with Tales From the Thousand Lakes back in 94, nothing existing was even close to that. Even their more recent work is quite unique (even if it aint metal anymore).

Stevie Wonder and the Black Vipers of Makaleki
definitely the most original band out there...listen to "I sat on the moon while drinking a dog's intestines" very cool song.
