GUITAR HEROS/IDOLS
I don't know if this kind of thread was posted, but I was just wondering who or whomever is your guitar hero/idol?
For me it would be Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Randy Rhoads
Galder and Chuck Schuldiner.

I have to say Dimebag. Not for his skills, or techniques, or whatever, there's plenty of guitarist better than him but he's the one who made me pick up a guitar and want to play it. I heard him and I said to myself "that's what i want to do".
I can't post this without mentioning: Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Petrucci, Steve Vai,
Malmsteen.

Kurt Kobain is the best guitarist ever
not
Mine would have to be Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, or that one dude who does the really fast solos and has 6 strings on his guitar. His guitar is made out of wood too. He plugs cables into his guitar then into the amplifier. He is in a band. He likes to play guitar.

Your an idiot. Your friend saw a "video" of someone saying that he was. And me being a huge Chuck fan (and alot of other people who I am sure would have mentioned this) is the first that I am hearing of this. You shouldn't fall victum to rumours unless you hear it from the person its about's mouth. Your an idiot for believing it and an even bigger idiot for assuming that its true and posting something that has much speculation about its truthfulness with out making clarity of how you came to that conclusion. And as Chuck himself said:
"Support music, not rumours."

Rudolf Shenker only did rhythm in the scorpions early years. Listen to some of the old stuff on the album "fly to the rainbow" by the scorpions. The lead guitarist then was Uli Jon Roth who was far more talented than Rudolf. I reccomend listening to "Sails of Charon" , "Fly to the Rainbow", and "Speedy's Coming" which are all early scorpion songs. Uli Jon Roth was known as the first shredder (listen to the part near the start of Sails of Charon)
If you didn't notice Uli Jon Roth is one of my guitar heroes too

I don't care, it wouldn't bother me or make his music any diffrent. It's the fact that people spread rumours and such that irritate me.

There are far better technical guitarists now, yes. But you have to look at it from then. He was probably the most innovated guitarist to have ever lived. He made licks, sounds, effects, ect that no one had ever even imagined. He was the first to use full blown distortion and his technicallity was unseen.
It dosen't matter how much you hate his music, you cannot deny his profound change he made in the guitar world, and music all together.

He used to be my hugest inspiration to me about a year and a half ago, before i knew what shred was. Then i met this 16 year old from a small town i go to every summer. He showed me a video of Michael Angelo and played me some stuff and i was sorta like . After that i was like "screw hendrix". He may have made the difference like Darko said but me...i dont really care who made the difference and changed stuff. I don't care much for Kurt Cobain or those "innovators" because they only started something in my opinion. The people nowadays perfected the genre to what it is today, which in my opinion is 10 times better (im talking about shred, death metal, some rock). I think that sure these people created something, but someone would have thought it up anyways, maybe just a bit later.

Kurt? Innovated? In the same sentence?!
I think thats a pretty apathetic approach Shred. With out that person who started it, then you wouldn't have it and where might you be if you didn't have it? That seems disrespectful to me.
Without Nintendo, where would video games be?
Without Socrates, where would philosophy be?
Without guitars, where would music be?
Without distortion, where would rock be?
Without T.V., where would society be? (probably better)
Without computers, what the fuck would I be doing right now?
See? You've got to give credit to people who have contributed to your happiness. It's reaping the benfits with out giving respect. Like getting into heaven without believing in God.

See? You've got to give credit to people who have contributed to your happiness. It's reaping the benfits with out giving respect. Like getting into heaven without believing in God.

You would be surprised how many people would say how innovative Kurt Cobain is (not on this forum) but anywhere else believe me. And i respect Jimi Hendrix he's just not MY guitar hero.

Mantas- Venom, listen to some of his soloes. He's great.
I'd also have to say the guitarist of Possessed, he's talented as well.

Shenker did the best Scorpions songs in the world, man. Hurricane, Still Loving You, and so forth.

Without Gerard Houllier, where would LFC be? (challenging Arsenal probably!)
Without Yorkshire pudding, where would roast dinners be?
It's all very well saying that "someone would have come up with it eventually" but they didn't need to because someone came up with it earlier. Hendrix was an innovator and I don't think that anybody can deny that fact, whether they like his music or not.
Anyway, my guitar heroes (in no particular order) are:
Karl Sanders
Trey Azagthoth
Daniel Mongrain
Jason Mendonca
Slash

Jimmy Page (BOW DOWN!)
Jack Owen
Pat O'Brian
Karl Sanders
Alexi Laiho
Hendrix
and recently i've seen some Akercocke stuff, the guitarists seem to have a similar playing style to mine.

Actually, I'm of the opinion Newton contributed more to physics (with his theories on dynamics) than to math (although he is mostly responsible for Calculus). Anyway, back on topic:
Steve Vai
Jon Schaeffer - actually stresses the music over being a guitar hero
Adrian Smith
Kirk Hammett
Cliff Burton R.I.P. (even though he played bass)
Gus G.
Chuck Schuldiner - R.I.P.
Randy Rhoads - R.I.P.
and I'm influenced by a lot of non-metal stuff musically - listen to a bit of Jazz (Chet Baker one of my fav's) and lots of Trance/Electronica

Physics is basically a subset of maths called applied mathematics (the use of mathematics to describe physical events). I haven't come across a subject in applied maths that doesn't use Calculus in almost every aspect. However, maths as a whole is a larger subject than physics and has much more Calculus within it's confines than physics (for instance Calculus is used in Pure Mathematics).
To see this more clearly consider Einstein, who devised Tensor Calculus. Tensor Calculus is very specific to General Relativity and doesn't have many applications in other mathematical fields. Newton's Calculus in comparison was far reaching and is used in practically every sub division of mathematics. That is why I believe that Newton contributed more to maths than to physics.
Anyway...
In my last post I missed out someone who's style I absolutely idolise. Dimebag Darrel from Pantera. His soloing style is so fluid and his riffs are awesome too. Also, how could I forget the riffmaster general himself, Tony Iommi.

Mick Thompson from Slipknot is a good guitarist as well, though he doesn't exactly show it in most Slipknot tracks. Dimebag is great as well.
(Am I the only person here who is bollocks at maths? Everyone seems to be argueing about physics and maths, i'm more of a language and literature person myself...)

Don't worry about it, most people feel the same way about maths. I think you've generally got to be interested in maths in order to study it to your full potential. It's like reading a book, you've got to be interested in what the book is about in order to take anything enjoyable from it.
Anyway... Yeah, Mick Thompson is an awesome guitarist. He had a feature in Total Guitar magazine and he can shred with the best of them. Actually it was that article that finally persuaded me to try and learn how to sweep pick, so you could say that I'm influenced by Mick Thompson.

guitar heroes huh?
hendrix was a god - not because hes better than anyone else(which hes not)
nor because hes innovative(which he is)
but because he made the guitar sing, and you can feel his shit when you listen. for those who dissagree, listen to watchtower.
micheal angelo, malmsteen, paul gilbert, eric johnson have to be given a mention.
alvin lee from ten years after was shredding before anyone else. well maybe not, but shred is just the next step on from his stuff.
jimmy page, santana can be given a negative mention
- dont get me wrong, i respect them and dont claim to be better, but i find listenening to the solo boring.
riffs get
dimebag
guys from machine head
guys from mettalica
guys from soil
whoever is rob/white zombie
jimmy page
but my all time HERO (aside from yours truly of course) is a bloke no one has mentioned yet...
Jeff beck
listen to his modern stuff 80's onwards

"All Along The Watchtower" isn't Hendrix's best track, i love "Castles Made of Sand", beautiful song.
Chuck Schuldiner is (was) pretty good, just heard "Zero Tolerance", good track.
(well, i say i'm bollocks at maths, did two tests at college today and got 97% and 100% somehow, mind you, it is GCSE lmao!)

"All along the Watchtower" is good, but I think Hendrix did much better music than that ; and it was just a cover from a Bob Dylan's song.
To me, it's all about his sense of rythm. Of course, I can't deny he was gifted for improvisation, but he also created such great, funky rythms. Just listen to "Band of Gypsys", in my opinion his best album ever. "Electric Ladyland" is also a good album. But I can't stand "Are you experienced" and the other one, forgot its title.
Another good guitarist was that guy from Queen. Not necessarly because of his technical abilities (even though his solos were great), but more because of the way he harmonized all these guitar parts together, just like a symphony. Listen to "A Night at the Opera" on a good sound system and you'll see what I mean, pure genious (of course, he might have been nothing without Freddie Mercury).

Man, you're doing better than me - and I went to uni to study the bastard subject! I only got an A at GCSE (A* is tops, I believe). I followed that mofo up with an A at A-level and then went on to an upper second (2:1, about 60%) at uni. Man, you've got potential! Well, more than me anyhow...
I think it was SpiritCrusher who mentioned Brian May from Queen. It was him and Freddie who did most of the songwriting and arranging for Queen and I have to admit he was a pretty good guitarist. He used the Hexatonic scale a lot and was quite an innovative guitarist if you ask me.
Brian uses an old sixpence as a pick. A sixpence, for anyone who doesn't know, is an old English coin that is around about a centimetre in diameter and and a millimetre thick. These coins where phased out in 1971 for fucks sake (although I think you could still use them for many years afterwards - until 1986 or something)!
On the subject of Jimi Hendrix, I have to say that the piece of music by him that moves me the most has to be the intro to Castles Made Of Sand. Simply brilliant; although my favourite song (or interpretation) by him is All Along The Watchtower. The solos in that song give me one of those "eargasms" every single time. Some of his rythms and improvisations are just awesome - I don't think there'll be another guitarist like him for years/centuries/millenia. Except for SRV of course...
Oh, and yeah, Jimi was left-handed but he played a right-handed Fender Strat turned upside-down (hence the inverted headstock).

Hmm, I guess I have an odd list.
Hendrix - Neverending Trip
Dan Moore - From Sheavy. His riffs may be simple, but he has a great style.
Jack Owen - Cannibal Corpse
Arto Huttunen - Enter My Silence. I love his style too.
David Gilmoure - Pink Floyd

I know it's a late post, but all the songs on the albums you just listed were written by Rudolf with the exception of like two. I looked it up .

Dude, i'm having to re-take it at 6th form, i got a D at GCSE math last time, pretty much 'cause I was a lazy bugger and I have a big arrogance and pride problem, but i don't have much potential in maths, i'm a wordy and philosophy person really.

Brian May, hummmm, not mentioned much really is he? Pretty good guitarist, not as good as Page though!

My hero? Well of course Alexi Laiho from COB!!!
Why? Well because his technique is awesome, speed is incredible, he's Finnish, and he writes great songs and most definately great guitar solos. Listen to the solo of "Sixpounder". It's perfect. Not exactly hyper-speedy but it fits like a glove to the song. Every single note is perfect. So harmonic. I could listen it all day. Oh, and his signature ESP kicks ass!
other great guys i like:
-Chuck
-Mick Thomson/Thompson
-Hetfield
-Van Halen
-Kerry King
-Zakk Wylde
...and of course other great guitarists but they're not exactly MY heroes...

My idols:
Steve Vai(once he had a 10 hour practice regime)
Yngwie Malmsteen
Joe Satriani(because he taught Vai)
:hey, look at my user name!:^^^
Jimi Hendrix(I love the Woodstock DVD)
Stevie Ray Vaughn(first saw him on a DVD, and he was the first person to show me how much you can do with simple blues riffs, and he played the guitar incredibly)
This may sound weird, but the first song I learned on guitar was Father Of Mine, by Everclear, so I have to thank them(it's horrible when I look at what they've become now)
I recently discovered Jason Becker, and he has showed me how great a guitarist/composer can be. He's STILL composing even with ALS, which is absolutely incredible.
Eddie VH never had much of an influence on me, but I learned that it is possible to shred on an acoustic guitar(same with Yngwie).
After taking a history of Jazz/Blues class last year, I now respect and admire many Jazz players.
