Right, as some of you may know,
I'm a REAL scales, modes and chords freak.
Completely meshuggah (no reference to the band).
And my career has been successful.
Especially in the scales and modes department.
This is a compilation of the stuff I've started
threads on in the Theory Forum. And just some
scale-y stuff. If you want the original theory
and stuff I found out about them, visit the
original threads.

Sorry about those two last penta' modes.
They are two I have not as yet come across.
Here are the symmetrical scales.
Built around the symmetrical chords
(Augmented and Diminished), they have cool,
almost 'swirling' feels, and produce
patterns on the fretboard which make them
easy to learn and improvise in, especially
on seven-string guitars.
Eight Tone Symmetrical
AKA Octatonic (Half-Whole)
AKA Arabian a).
AKA Auxilliary Diminished Blues
Code:
[----------------------------------------6-7-9-10~~]
[--------------------------------5-6-8-9-----------]
[------------------------3-4-6-7-------------------]
[----------------2-3-5-6---------------------------]
[--------1-2-4-5-----------------------------------]
[0-1-3-4-------------------------------------------]
A favourite of Karl Sanders from Nile.
Six Tone Symmetrical
(don't know any AKA's)
Code:
[------------------------------8--9~~]
[------------------------9--10-------]
[------------------9--10-------------]
[------------10-11-------------------]
[------11-12-------------------------]
[12-13-------------------------------]
Then there are Japanese scales,
which are highly melodic and from
them can be drawn HUGE melodies.
They have what I call 'stacked' intervals.
I'll do the Japanese a). on seven strings.
Code:
[------------------------0-1-5~]
[--------------------0-1-------]
[------------------2-----------]
[--------------2-3-------------]
[--------0-2-3-----------------]
[----0-1-----------------------]
[0-1---------------------------]
Then there the Southern Far Eastern scales,
some Vietnamese and Malaysian, such as
Kumoi and Pelog. Sound right odd.
[FORGOTTEN-THEM,-SORRY!--------]
Then there's the Persian scale. DAMN odd.
Starts quite Arabic then goes off on a blues
tangent.
Odd shaping as well.
Code:
[----------------------------0-1-4-5~]
[------------------------1-4---------]
[------------------1-2-3-------------]
[------------1-2-3-------------------]
[------0-1-3-------------------------]
[0-1-4-------------------------------]
Now, here's the daddy of oddness.
The Nonatonic scale, or Nine Tone scale.
Yes, NINE NOTES.
Code:
[------------------------------------0-2-3-4-6~]
[----------------------------0-1-2-4-----------]
[----------------------0-1-3-------------------]
[----------------1-2-4-------------------------]
[--------1-2-3-4-------------------------------]
[0-2-3-4---------------------------------------]
Now, the Promethean scale. Having no common chord
in it, it sounds melodically amorphous. Puzzling
listening.
Code:
[------------]
[------------]
[------------]
[----------0-]
[------1-4---]
[0-2-4-------]
Lydian Diminished!
A favourite of mine!
Has some nice, moody Diminished-style modes.
Code:
[----------------------------0-2-3-6~]
[----------------------0-2-4---------]
[------------------0-3---------------]
[------------1-2-4-------------------]
[------1-2-4-------------------------]
[0-2-3-------------------------------]
Let me present to you a scale that I have
never seen ANYWHERE ELSE and thus named
after myself:
THE MACDONALDIAN SCALE!
Code:
[----------------------------0-2-3-5~]
[----------------------1-2-4---------]
[------------------0-2---------------]
[------------1-2-4-------------------]
[------0-3-4-------------------------]
[0-2-3-------------------------------]
Has the most awesome modes.
Not named them as yet.
The mode starting on the 4th string
(3rd highest) starts like a pentatonic
(to be exact, the Egyptian penta' mode)
and vanishes into kind-of harmonic minor,
diminished-ness.
Hope it's all helpful.
