various strings

Do different strings vary much in sound ?
I got a 0.10 e string instead of a 0.09..does that make any greater diffrence since I am a total guitar newbie ?

The higher the gauge the heavier the string (in sound). I have .11s on my guitar and it gives it a heavier sound than .9 strings. Thats all i know...

You wont be able to tune a .09 as low as a .11, and 10 is just in between.
.09's are good for a standard tuning and D. If you go any lower like C, B then use 10 or 11's. If you go to A use a .12

You shouldnt really change a single string to a different size, buy a whole set with sizes you like.

I use 52, 42, 32, 24, 16, 11 and I cant tune my guitar higher then C. So depending on what you play i guess.

why cant u tune .11 strings to E on ure guitar?

with putting thicker strings on ure guitar the sound of your guitar will cange. on condition u don't tune the guitar down to get an .10 feeling with .12 strings on b tuning(u stay in E or Eb), the sound will be effected by more ....brilliance. u also can get a nice distortion throught the strings even without much gain from the amp depending on how hard u hit the strings. good example for that is ac/dc as far as sound is concernd.

Because they would break if i did. I've broken them a couple times doing that. Maybe its the setup i use on my les paul that stops me from tuning that high.

.09-.11 is the high e by the way.... I think a lot of people get the sizes confused somehow.

yours break??? wtf?? i use 11's to tune to e.... it's probably your bridge, the sharp knife edge likes to eat strings. it's a good thing i have and edge pro II, with rounded saddles

the string guage does affect the out put sound. 8's have less 'heaviness' as opposed to 11's when tuned to e. i also find that since the tension of higher guage strings need to be higher in order to reach e tuning, they offer more sustain and are great for faster playing (trem picking) and are easier to pinch on. i dunno, maybe it's just me, but thats what i find.

11's are the only thing i can tune to e with, maybe 10-52's cuz my bridge is crap (jackson fr licensed) but i have to have my strings tight as hell to play without a buncha shit noise.

I use .12s to tune to either B or C depending on what style I'm playing. If you've never used them before - check out Elixir strings, they're a bit expensive to say the least but the sound quality and lifespan of the strings is pretty much unbeatable

^ You just need to adjust the truss rod and maybe file down your bridge slightly - bridges set up for lighter gauge strings have a tendancy to slice through higher gauge strings

.9s

I use .9s. if u want to play faster instead of heavier than lighter gauges are what u are looking for. speaking of heavyness, Tony Iommi uses .7s or .8s and he gets a heavy sound. (must be his gear?)

guitarenvy on the new june 2004 guitarworld they have an interview with zakk wylde and he says that in order for him to get to not break strings on his les paul so fast and allow him to get a normal tuning with a higher string gauge he wraps the strings over the top of the bridge piece. U should try it maybe itl work. Plus it looks pretty shredder (lol) u should check out the mag itl seem more clear.
