i dont get what people see in lemmy from motorhead?... someone explain why they think hes so good? he uses a rickenbacker, a pick, and some overdrive.. whats the big deal?
Victor wooten - classical thump
Stu hamm - quahogs anyone?
Jaco pastorius - portrait of tracy
probably the three most inspiring songs ever! for bass..

Until now I never really played like Pete though. I played pop, rock and brute nu-metal. Mostly fingerstyle. But since I bought a Boss ODB-3, I'm exploring the overdriven pick bass sounds, which are fab in my opinion.
Type O's a great band. Varied with a great sound. Every album again. And thus a huge influence on the way I experience music.

He is a wonderful bass player, original tone, great expessionist, just don't see them live unless they are sober. I've seen petter use a beer bottle as a pick, live, drunking between notes. Totally sucked as they were so drunk!

I agree. Peter Steele is my favorite bassist and he's reason I play bass today. He may not be the best, but his bass playing isn't drowned out by Kenny's guitar. I love it that I point out the bass instead of struggling to hear it. Plus he's original.

Oh, I've been wondering, what kinda distortion does Peter use. And I notice that his strap is a chain, can you buy those or do you have to make them.

When bored, my friend took a chain and put it onto his guitar by unscrewing the things that hold the strap. It fit perfectly when he srewed them back in. Just find the right length chain and I guess connect some leather strap to it so that it doesn't kill your shoulders. I should also mention that my friend didn't care about his guitar because it was a piece, and also that guitars weigh less so the chain may hurt alot.
Someone once told me they thought Peter went through a distortion pedal that goes through another distortion pedal. If I ever wanted to imitate him I'd just play around with a dist. pedal and with the equalizer until I got the desired sound. I don't really like distorted bass though, it sound too much like guitar for one, and it's more difficult to play fast stuff because there is so much interference and you can't hear as well.

It sounds like Peter only uses that heavy distorted sound when he plays slower songs anyway. He has a great clean sound too. Hell, I like all of peter's sounds. He is just a badass bass player, even though he may not be completely metal, still just incredible soul in his playing.

My most influential album would have to be versus the world by Amon Amarth, they have shaped my music the way I want to play and they just have an inspiring message... To fight till death

Slayer - reign in blood, that has had the biggest affect on my life as a bass player, due 2 the sheer speed of it. Tom Araya, bass god!

Ok, I respect Tom Araya because he's able to keep up, but come on, "Bass God"? Yeah he sings and plays, but his playing's nothing special. Steele runs circles around him, and even Lemmy has him beat.
And, adressing an above post, Lemmy gets alot of credit because he's fucking Lemmy. He's doing the same thing he did in 1975, withstood hair metal without succumbing to it, and lived through grunge. Plus, I don't know, he's just Lemmy. He's fucking Lemmy.
