Instrumental killer songs?

Anyone know any good instrumental metal songs? Specific genres doesn't matter very much, just blurt out whatever you happen to like.

Isis - Altered Course (always gets me)
October Tide - Dear Sun
Augury - From Eden Estranged
Bongzilla

I'm drawing a blank as I don't have anything in front of me.

Capricorns and Behold... the Arctopus are pretty good, as are Red Sparowes, Dysrhythmia and Grails although the latter triumverate are more like progressive rock with metal influences or parts.

And there is the mighty but sadly now defunct Synergist, of course. Ask Dylan to send you the demo.

There's also my favourite instrumental of all time: Desolate Ways.

Everything that John said is fantastic, most notably Behold... the Arctopus and Dysrhythmia, though they're more "intense". Zevious is another great instrumental band to check out (has the drummer from Dysrhythmia in it, check out this live version of "Coma Cluster") if you're into crazy jazz kind of stuff. I got the pleasure of having a couple beers with them a few months ago in LA.

I've got some more to throw out I'm sure when I can take a look at my CDs. For some reason the shit I recalled off the top of my head was more sullen, relaxed stuff.

And yeah, if you want a copy of that Synergist demo I'll throw you one . PM me your e-mail.

John: Many thanks for the plug. Speaking of which! I know I mentioned this a long time ago, but I do have a live set sitting in a VHS that I totally need to digitally convert, along with two studio unreleased tracks. I will do it some day. I've been throwing around the idea of re-mastering the Synergist demo and pressing a couple hundred copies but, who knows. Also worth mentioning is that the new Deadhead Roses album that'll be done in a few weeks has the keyboardist from Synergist in it now.

Haha, fucking awesome subject. I've been goofing around with my thrash/speed type stuff and compiled two instrumental thrash CDs. I've been rummaging through my death metal to do the same with that subgenre, but there isn't as much instrumental death metal, it seems. Gorguts had some great instrumentals, though. If anyone has any instrumental DM recommendations, send them this way.

Here are the two thrash comps I made. Don't mind the formatting and track info, I'm just copy-pasting. Also note that many of these bands have several excellent instrumental tracks, but I restrict all bands to one appearance per volume when I'm making compilation disks. Just a weird habit I have.

Volume 1
1. Living Death - Polymorphic (Killing in Action, 1991) 3:12
2. Mekong Delta - The Hut of Baba Yaga (Mekong Delta, 1987) 4:17
3. Defiance - Tribulation (Product of Society, 1989) 5:07
4. Nasty Savage - ? (Indulgence, 1987) 3:52
5. Destruction - Upcoming Devastation (Eternal Devastation, 1986) 4:06
6. Coroner - Arc-Lite (Punishment for Decadence, 1988) 3:19
7. Darkness - Tarsman of Chor (Death Squad, 1988) 5:20
8. Metal Church - Merciless Onslaught (Metal Church, 1985) 2:55
9. Flotsam & Jetsam - Flotzilla (Doomsday for the Deceiver, 1986) 6:08
10. Dark Angel - Cauterization (Leave Scars, 1989) 7:20
11. Metallica - Orion (Master of Puppets, 1986) 8:25
12. Annihilator - Schizos are Never Alone (Alice in Hell, 1989) 4:32
13. Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence (The Ultra-Violence, 1987) 10:35
14. Heathen - Guitarmony (Victims of Deception, 1991) 3:31
15. Megadeth - Into the Lungs of Hell (Paul Lani Mix) (So Far, So Good... So What?, 1988) 3:31
16. Testament - Confusion Fusion (Practice What You Preach, 1987) 3:07

Volume 2
1. Razor - The Marshall Arts (Violent Restitution, 1988) 2:46 - Instrumental
2. Obliveon - Access to the Acropolis (From This Day Forward, 1990) 4:14 - Instrumental
3. Coroner - Nosferatu (R.I.P., 1987) 3:34 - Instrumental
4. Nuclear Assault - Live, Suffer, Die (Game Over, 1987) 1:07 - Instrumental
5. Addictive - The Forge (Pity of Man, 1989) 4:55 - Instrumental
6. Metallica - The Call of Ktulu (Ride the Lightning, 1984) 8:55 - Instrumental
7. Laaz Rockit - Necropolis (Nothing$ $acred, 1991) 3:52 - Instrumental
8. Arcane - Mirror of Deception (Destination Unknown, 1990) 4:21 - Instrumental
9. Enslaved - For a Friend (Where is the Meaning?, 1994) 4:46 - Instrumental
10. Agent Steel - The Day at Guyana (Unstoppable Force, 1987) 6:37 - Instrumental
11. Attacker - Octagon (The Second Coming, 1988) 1:54 - Instrumental
12. Juggernaut - Juggernaut (Baptism Under Fire, 1986) 2:30 - Instrumental
13. Protector - Palpitation (The Heritage, 1992) 4:43 - Instrumental
14. Tankard - For a Thousand Beers (Chemical Invasion, 1987) 7:23 - Instrumental
15. Whiplash - Ticket to Mayhem (Insult to Injury, 1990) 4:07 - Instrumental
16. Rigor Mortis - Welcome to Your Funeral (Rigor Mortis, 1988) 3:30 - Instrumental
17. Sabbat - A Dead Man's Robe (History of a Time to Come, 1988) 4:49 - Instrumental
18. Sepultura - Inquisition Symphony (Schizophrenia, 1987) 7:17 - Instrumental

I would also highly recommend you to check out Blotted Science. They are an excellent, avant-garde extreme metal band and 100% of their work is purely instrumental. The founding and stable members and primary songwriters are Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink) and Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse). It's really kind of an instrumental supergroup with revolving drummers. It's some of the best metal I've ever heard in my life and, despite being highly technical and borderline death metal, it's very accessible and can be enjoyed by non-metal fans.

Since a lot of those bands are lesser known, I can throw these comps in a compressed folder and upload them if any wants to check some of this shit out. PM me if you do.

Waaaooow. Chris, you've just single handedly secured my study pace for weeks to come. I'll get back to you once I'm done browsing the more easily accessible stuff.
And yea, already a fan of Blotted; friggin awesome.

Instrumental death... ha, yea. I immediately come to think of Death's "Cosmic ocean" but then I pretty much run up against a wall.

Hmmm, instrumental DM...

Morbid Angel - Desolate Ways (not strictly a DM song, I know, but...)
Death - Voice of the Soul (ditto)
Nile - Ruins
Nader Sadek - Nigredo in Necromance (given your love for MA - well, A-H MA at least - you should check these guys out. Flo Mounier drums for them and Steve Tucker handles vocals)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

ARGHOSLENT - INCORRIGABLE BIGOTRY

Also the Nefas - Seven Times Seven album. Ffffffffffffùcked up shit. No note is played for longer than 0.667 seconds and then doesn't come back for 5 minutes. Swirling fucked up shit right there and there's vocals but the instruments just take up so much attention this album is physically draining to listen to holy fucking sssssssssssssssssssshhhitttt.

Also Chris maybe you'd like Ulcerate (NO YOU WILL ALL LIKE ULCERATE). It ain't exactly instrumental but it IS all about the instruments and the vocals are there for like what, 10% of the time or some shit.

I never got Arghoslent, honestly. It just sounds like some kids from Virginia trying to rehash the Gothenburg sound that I never liked in the first place about 10 years too late for it to be original or interesting in any way. Beyond that, they don't employ any particularly odd or interesting scales, chords, structures, time sigs, or tempo shifts to at least make their music different. Their music has a very hollow, disconnected, unfeeling air to it, almost though it it's entirely disingenuous. I honestly feel as though they've simply co-opted an aesthetic they don't truly feel or even appreciate in order to push their ideological agenda onto a crowd more willing to receive it than some others.

Maybe I'm just biased as a half niggard when it comes to shit like this, but since my favorite band on this planet are Morbid Angel, I tend to think I can let shit like this go when the music is actually good.
