Punk/Metal: Thrice
What do you guys think of Thrice?
You can't really call them metal.... and you can't really call them hardcore punk, but they don't do a bad job of combining the two.
check out stuff from their album: "The Illusion of Safety", like the songs "Where Idols Once Stood", and "A Subtle Dagger"

You're right. It's very much crossover. In fact it's pretty much their own sound.
Metal elements - Riffing, bassline, some drum patterns
Punk elements - vocals & backing vocals, drum sound esp. 2 & 4 snare beat
Neither - lyrics, breaking into a piano tune
There's all sorts of bits that are reminiscent of heavy metal bands, there's certainly plenty of variation in the music.
I like it.

I heard their song Phoenix Ignition(and a few others) , but I liked that song. Haven't heard "Where the Idols Once Stood". I've always thought they were a screamo band... If you haven't heard the Phoenix Ignition song, you should, then you can see where I got the impression that they were a screamo band.
I learned thrice means "3". Once, twice, thrice...
I think they're a decent band.

I like everything I have heard from them, I havent been able to get a hold of the cd yet though. I think genrewise they are emocore but I hate labels so fuk it.

Those guys were best friends with my friends brother.. Eddie Breckenridge or whatever.. used to know that guy. never really listened to Thrice though but I saw them for free at a church thing a few years ago

their new Cd: "The Artist in The Ambulance" is pretty fricking good man. it definitely has a different mood than their last album, they have a few creepy keyboard and electronic bits sprinkled into the songs. They're using the double bass drums and leads less, but the songs are still pretty strong. i personally liked the mood on the last album more , though. here are some awesome tracks from it:

#8. Melting Point of Wax
#10. The artist in the Ambulance (this is a bit more punkish)
the only problem i have with this album, is that some songs sound kinda similar.

Thrice are very good the songs ''Dead Bolt'' and ''To awake and avenge the dead'' there very good and sound a lot like funeral for a freind which r also metal combined with punk.

i personally think Thrice's smartness makes up for their lack of heaviness. those melodies and chord progressions are genius.....
oh and their recent album is darker and heavier than previous albums.

i like thrice alot, bands like that(we call it screamo because it heavier than emo) are anything but new here in ut. ever since "the used" came out all mainstream. i think they're ok but there are alot of better bands in this state that should be representing us instead.
if you guys like bands like thrice, you should chack out alot of acts from slc utah. we have a huge melodicore/screamo scene out here.
a couple of the larger acts are her candane and day two. you guys should check them out, they have some shit on mp3.com/hercandane or mp3.com/daytwo if you guys are interested.

good point.
a lot of so called 'hardcore' listeners don't even know what genre they are talking about, when they say screamo they think of emo with screams (go listen to DEP or Converge!)
also, Metalcore is oftenly mistaken as a gay mix of hardcore and metal, if you want to hear some good metalcore stuff, check out Caliban, Deadlock, Fear My Thoughts, Destiny, Underoath, ZAO, Heaven Shall Burn etc.
I can only stand metalcore and real hardcore/sxe hardcore like xShockwavex, xDisciplex a.d., xMaroonx, Earth Crisis, Backfire!, Day Of Contempt, Reprisal, Congress and those kinda bands.
