Dude, are you insane? Kirk sucks. Just watch some of their live videos and you'll see it for yourself. He is so fucking sloppy, he fucks up all the time, can't even play half his damn solos, and is addicted to his fucking wah pedal. When it comes to wah, he has zero creativity. It's just wah, wah, wah, wah, stupid. I have heard many guitarists who used a wah pedal and it just gave their playing a whole new dimension, it was crazy; Hammett's not one of them.
I think that even Hetfield is a better guitarist than Kirk Hammett. He is an awesome vocalist, at least was up until St. Anger. He is a much better vocalist than Dave, especially live, but one must keep in mind that while James is singing he is usually playing some pretty straight forward and fairly simply rhythm stuff, whereas Dave is singing and ripping up insane solos at the same time. It's a miracle the guy can sing at all when he's playing that shit.
Megadeth's music is also a hell of a lot more complex than Metallica's. And Dave didn't start doing Heroin until he was kicked out of Metallica. He was just a nasty drunk and used to beat the shit out of people when he'd get wasted.
As far as Metallica still being metal, I don't think that Cliff being alive would make a whole hell of a lot of difference. After all, he was just the bass player, (a damn good one, but still just the bass player). He didn't start the band, James and Lars did, and it was therefore them who decided which direciton Metallica and its music took.
Also, The System Has Failed kicks the shit out of St. Anger any day of the week. I am a huge Metallica fan, but am also a huge Megadeth fan as well.
Anyway, here's my final two cents.
Dave Mustaine = amazing guitarist, way better than both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett combined. Although he may have been an arrogant cunt, there's no denying this.
James Hetfield = amazing vocalist and songwriter, always was way better at singing than Dave, and he's also a pretty good guitar player. He may be an arrogant, self indulgent cunt now, but there's no denying that he wrote some of the greatest metal classics of all time.

Hetfield.

Hetfield has better vocals and riffs, but Mustaine is a better soloist.

They are matched up so as to inspire debate, Mr Transient. If the thread was Hetfield AND Mustaine rather than Hetfield OR Mustaine it would just be a giant love-fest of a thread which, of course, would just inspire jets of vomit to spew forth from all those who only have a hard-on for one or t'other.

Besides a thread expounding the virtues of both would quickly turn into a "Vs" thread anyway.

I dislike James for..... well, being part of the band that released st anger. I don`t really know that much about Dave, but i heard he kicked Dissection of a tour, just because they didn`t exactly share his view on religion. I maybe wrong about him, but from what i have heard, he sounds pretty arogant.

here. i just did some stupid quoting tricks. this is my opinion.
James- Pretty good vocalist, pretty good guitar player, wrote some good riffs, but the fills are just boring.

Dave- Really unique (and IMO better) vocals, Amazing guitar/songwriting abilities, great at fills, great at solos.. so i chose dave, and you know why. I like megadeth better then metallica, but i love metallica (obviously i mean before st anger).

I don't care about their personalitys. It's the music. Dave is an arrogant cunt that likes pushing people around.. but i wouldnt skip a Deth show for that reason. It's all about the music.

Hands down Mustaine wins. I will say that I love Mustaine's vocals and think they fit his music quite well. He has some quite creative rhythmn riffs and solos also.
