hey everyone

ummm i recently decided to take over vocals for my band, i was just wondering
about diff techniques for growling and screaming. its the latter that i actually need help on!

growling- cup the mic with your hands for a deeper sound. just keep practicing, when i first started growling practice, i could barley talk after like 20 mins, now, i can go for many hours straight........

screaming- well, dont cup the mic, and combine a real scream with more of a clear sound (its hard to explain)..... but dont just scream or you will sound like old cradle of filth.......

Well, if you want to have original, cool screams, just do it that way, you're sure you won't be able to talk after 5-6 minutes.

drink yoghurt, lots of it, it keeps your throathe ready for action and it won't stop after 5-6 minutes!

when you drink water, don't drink cold water, that's really bad, but do take care, drink enough water, just get a 2 litre bottle.

I do lots of backing vocals and I even sing a part of a song in my screamo/hc band, so I've tried them both, yoghurt sounds weird but it really works, you'll get the 'psycho' sound cuz of the slime yoghurt builds up in your troathe, try it !

I don't use any special stuff, but the more my voice goes away, the more harder I have growl... This ends up a really painful and brutal sounding..

yeah, cool.
for me, my voice is the deepest when i'm sick. and sometimes
i get a head cold from growling too much.
but for growling: don't try from the throat, that for me hurts too much,
you should "speak through the balls", suck in you stomoch and growl from
within.

i got a question about growling and i guess this topic works.

at the beginning of the song Quintessance by Rotting Christ there's this really deep voice. does that qualify as growling or just deep voicness?

When I smoked, I recognized, it just makes my growls sound shit.
More like a hard imitation of AC/DC.

if you can growl then you should be able to scream. the way that worked for me was when i wanted to growl i made myself picture someone beating all holy crap out of a friend or loved one then i would be so pissed off that it came naturally. and then to scream i did the same thing only in higher pitch. this probably won't work for everyone and if it does then it will take some practice.

I DO LEAD VOX AS WELL AS LEAD GUITARS IN MY BAND, IT'S REALLY NOT THAT HARD TO GROWL AND SCREAM. I'VE NOTICED THE LESS YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH, THE DEEPER THE GROWL.
