Building up vocal chord muscles..

Hey all, first post

Been trying to learn to scream and teach my band's singer how to scream for quite a while now, fairly unsuccessfully.

Personally I can't scream but I think I've learnt how to 'rasp' correctly, but my throat is still a little sore afterwards, and it sounds like I have a cold. I'm not a singer, but want to learn - my throat also hurts a bit after singing, or after talking for a long time (say, almost constantly for an hour).

What exercises can help build strength in my vocal chords so this won't happen?
