Looking to get a new head...

So I'm shitting around, looking at new gear. Anyone ever play out of a Green head? Made by the same people who make Orange heads.

http://www.greenamps.com/green-tubeamps.html

Same question about an Emperor cab. If anyone has one, what do you have, and how much did you pay for it.

Right now I'm running a 5150 (OG, not any of the shit remakes) and a Marshall JCM 800 cab. Looking for something a little heavier/more full.

oh man. You need some edumacating.

Green has NOTHING to do with orange. NOTHING.

and also, there is no difference between 5150's and 6505's. Just the name. The remakes aren't shit. Theyre identical.

Heres how the story goes.
Dude starts company called matamp. Dude builds matamps, green amps, and orange amps (which jimmy paige used for some time). Dude's partner takes orange name and continues orange amps (this happens in like the early 70's). Matamp continues matamp/green amps. Swing way forward to the 90's. Matamp still makes oranges, and makes their own amps. But quality sucks. Dude from the states (Joel) BUYS matamp, and becomes the USA distributor.
Quality of matamps suck dicks for this period. Every one that goes to the USA needs a complete overhaul because of inconsistency in parts/using old parts/bad construction. Resistors are not to spec, transformers are not to spec, they just dont work. Joel is epically pissed.

Fast forward near to the end of Joel's ownership, he designs Electric Amps, and outsources some of the work to the matamp guys in huddersfield. He gets something like 14 of them, and they all suck. All of them need overhauls, the instructions are not followed, they just dont measure up to what Joel designed. Reference:
http://www.planetoftheamps.com/elec...comparison.html

so he changes his sourcing of electric amps to florida, where they are hand made with USA military styled components. Just heavy duty beefy shit. Main website is http://www.electricamp.com/
Other websites he has all direct to eachother and include:
http://www.greenamps.com/
http://www.purpleamps.com/
http://www.blackamps.com/
http://www.whiteamp.com/
http://www.motorcitymadamp.com/
http://www.matamp.com

Some reference: http://www.matamp.com/mat-mathias.html

I'm still going though. Matamp UK now makes their old amps, and some new amps. Quality is back up and amazing. Fully customizable. And a good idea for doom/stoner stuff. As well as lower gain classic rock stuff.

Electric Amp USA makes their new electric amps, and have 4 types. Volume unit (no master), master volume unit, power unit (poweramp), and dual rectifier unit (nonmaster, master, and tremolo available). ]
Some idiots think that electric amps are old orange OR120 ripoffs, but they arent. They are very very different. They use hand made point-to-point construction, are nearly indestructable, have a different tonestack, and have more gain. Much more gain. Also, the transformers are built to destroy worlds. Fantastic amps.

Now for their use, they pull off doom and stoner QUITE well. Here are some clips i have foudn in my long searching. I heard that they can also do a tight thrash tone, but i have never heard one used for it.
High on Fire apparently used electrics on the album Surrounded by Thieves.

Thanks! And I guess I was a bit misinformed about the relationship between Orange/Green; guy on another forum told me otherwise.

And about the 5150/6505 thing; I meant the remakes as in 5150 II and III's (I could swear the II was the one that was shit, but don't quote me on that). I'm thinking of putting a Tubescreamer re-issue on my effects loop to boost it a little, but I'm not sure.

Out of all of those videos, the dudes in High On Fire seem to be the ones getting the best tone out of those Greens. I'm in a slightly heavier hardcore band these days, and I'm starting to think the Green might be a bit too thick, and not clean enough. I've never gotten to fuck around with an Orange either, since there aren't any higher end guitar stores around me. I'm probably going to hit Guitar Center this week to check out some new heads.

If you can suggest one of the other Matamp heads that'd go better with what I'm looking for, feel free.

I've heard a lot of good things about Green amps, and I believe Sleep also used them as mentioned in one of those youtube videos.

The sound the guy is getting in the second-to-last video is seriously massive. I would really, really like to play around with one. Keep us updated if you ever get your hands on one.

2nd to last? You mean the Hank III video of him playing the same amps that Sleep used on Jerusalem?

I talked to the guy who recorded my band's EP about gear last night. He's suggesting I steer clear of Electric Amps (overpriced for the tone they put out), and started telling me how a Sunn Model T head would be perfect for what I'm looking for. I dunno. Like I said, I'm not even sure if I'm in the market for new gear. I'm happy with my 5150 when I'm not playing a venue where I'm getting Mic'd (dipshit sound guys always ask me to turn down, and that 5150 doesn't start purring till its up at 4 or 5 at least).

...Actually that would make any other argumentation useless. Holy Cow I would kill for that Speedwolf-sound, including the accoustic part.

1. Theres 3 5150s. A 5150/6505, a 5150II/6505+ and the fender 5150.
They are all good for metal. Though the fender one has better cleans.

2. Tubescreamers dont go in the fx loop. You COULD use a clean boost like a microamp for a volume boost, but it wont add gain. If you want gain, put the tubescreamer out front.

3. Sunn model T's are incredibly overpriced these days. Going for over 1000$ used. 4 years ago they were 400-500$. That, and they are very low gain. They are essentially a fender bassman in tersm of gain. In fact, the only differences between it and the bassman is a slight modification to the tone stack, a little modification between the channels, and a super clean output section. The way you get them dirty is you turn them up loud, but they put out 120 watts clean, and near 190 watts dirty... and will destroy everything in terms of volume. The preamp is possible of turning otu dirt, but nothing up to metal. Its more of a plexi type distortion. But if you get the poweramp cooking, it will destroy planets. Check out the band Sunn O))), they use sunn model t's cranked to full.

4. Electrics are not quite overpriced. You are paying for an entirely handmade head that has a HUGE range of tones, that will probably never break down.. The deep knob is essentially a tonestack switcher that switches the amount of low end. With that you can go from fendery clean, to thrash, to all out doom. It is expensive, but reasonable for what you are getting.

5. about the volume. Yeah, you're guna get asked to turn down with a sunn. They're louder than fuck. And same with an electric. Although electrics can have good toans at lower volumes.
If you want to fix up your 5150, you should get it modified to have a hotter bias circuit. 5150's come biased stock with very cold tubes (like 40-50%). When you heat them up to 65-70% dissipation they will seriously start singing. It will make it sound like sex.

UPDATE!

New videos of electrics. Notice the camera shaking from the bass.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-bwJAzgxLM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63TqCE17hNo

Boosted, it can apparently cover At The Gates?
Note on this one, he said he turned the DEEP knob all the way to the right. For anybody who doesnt know, the DEEP knob is a switch, i think 6 position switch, and as you rotate it right it adds more capacitors infront of one of the later gainstages, which acts as a high-pass filter. Essentially the further right you go, the less bass and gain you get. It is analogous to vintage Orange's FAC knob.

I can't edit the title of the thread, so:

Anyone have any experience/opinions on either the Sovtek Mig 100, or the Sunn Model T re-issue? Almost certain that I'm getting rid of my 5150 for one of these.

I'm not completely sure, but the mig 100 is either a fender bassman copy with more gain, or a jcm800 copy. Takes pedals like a champ. xdislexicx had a modded one for a while.

The Sunn re-issue is an interesting amp. Thick and heavy yes, but i've heard it has some problems with clarity... but the guy who was telling me that told me 5150's sound like shit, to which i wholeheartedly disagree. Yes it can get heavy, but not to the levels of gain that a 5150 has, nor the tightness at all.

Have you bias-modded your 5150 yet? It will make it sound loads better. and its easy and totally reversible.

The Sovtek Mig100 to my knowledge is a JCM 800 clone, most that I've seen run 6l6's. Very under rated amps.

If you're looking into that realm of amps, also check out Red Bear amps too. They're certainly ugly. But all PTP built. JCM 800-ish tones but with more gain. They're hard to come by sometimes, but they go for stupid cheap. I just saw a 60w not even sell for $350 on Ebay.

With amps like that. Playing hardcore and things needing a tighter response, I'd suggest a clean boost, tube screamer, or EQ. There is plenty of gain in them, they just aren't voiced very modern like your 5150.

That said... 5150's are some of my favorite amps. I'm running a 5150II that's been modded by FJA mods(Bias, Clarity, Transformer, Choke, Noise Reduction, MKI Lead Spec, Low Tone Shift). It's been my main amp on the road for the last couple years. But I also just love stock 5150's of any variety. If you play anything gainy and aggressive, I think the 5150 is a solid amp to go with. Even if it is generic. The biggest eye opener for me when I joined a touring band was when I bought a beat to shit 5150 for $400 as a backup to my VHT Pittbull... Then sold the Pittbull because I just had to be honest with myself. All that money I've shelled out on top notch over priced hype amps over the years, and I'm just happier with 5150's.

I'm going to play around with a Sovtek when a friend's band stops through here on tour in a few weeks. Dude loves it, but says it won't be enough gain for me.

Honestly, I don't think i'll be replacing either my head OR cab right now... I just finished re-tolexing and fixing my JCM 800 cab, and now that I look into the date codes on the speakers, this thing is from 1981... its loaded with Celestion 65s.

I can't believe I bought this setup for $1.

not that anyone cares, I'm sure, but I ended up trading my 5150 for a JCM 900 (2100 MKIII series), and I got a Maxon OD 808 to boost with. The 900 fits the tone I'm looking for perfectly, doesn't mud up, and is still heavy enough for what I'm playing.

Didn't get that job, so a Green head and/or Emperor cab are out of the question haha. I'm going to end up getting another cab, maybe a Marshall 1960a/b.

sounds great. I love the 2100's. Second best sounding jcm900 out there . But seriously brings the thick brootz.

One thing i do with my amp (30th anniversary, jcm900-alike) is i put an eq in the loop to boost the low mids and tame the super high fizz. Makes it super thick. I dont even have to boost the mids, i just like doing it haha.

When I find a cheap MXR 10 band on Craigslist, I'll jump on it. Its probably not 100% crucial that I get one, but I think it'd tighten up my tone.

I care about my tone waaaaaaaay too much for the style of music I'm playing. Hah.
