2000 - 2009
Since we are coming to the end of the first decade of the noughties, how do we all feel about this decade of music?
Metalcore, Melodic Hardcore and Deathcore all seemed to reign supreme throughout most of it. But what else thrived? What else did you really hate? What did you really love?
Highlights of this decade so far and lowlights. Also, what do you project for next year? More of the same? What about the next decade? Where will music go?
I realise it's only mid 2008, but unless there is a worldwide musical revolution I don't think a lot will change in 1 year.
Discuss?
Edit; I forgot Emo raged as well. Not only that, a lot of dance pop stuff such as The Killers, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco etc. [although I guess some people here would consider those emo as well?]

So far worldwide, I've noticed a thrash metal revival beginning around 2003-2004 and continuing. Bands from the US, UK, South America, and elsewhere are springing up and kicking ass. Some good, some mediocre, and some outright terrible.

It's actually true. Probably the last thing I expected to happen
As far as popular shit goes though, pop country is everywhere like a goddamn epidemic.

dunno, plenty of good music came out since 2000, but even more junk. good musics good music! i guess the thrash revival was unexpected, along with all the old school DM bands reuniting (at the gates, carcass, pestilence, cynic, etc). nothing great has come of those though

The Bad - Mainstream music keeps getting shittier. Pop used to be an abbreviation for 'popular' but now it refers to the onomatopoeia for bubble gum.
The Good - The internet has revolutionized how people can become exposed to music....whether it be myspace or last.fm. For some people, it used to be virtually impossible to hear obscure music whether it be because of lack of funds or remote location. More and more people are being exposed to better and better music and have all but stopped listening to the radio. The future looks bright for the new and upcoming musicians.

X Japan's reunite pretty much made the whole decade.
The bad things were that Children of Bodom became terrible. So did Dir en grey. Plus many other bands. Also the whole emo thingy. The only thing in music I've ever hated.

because the garbage that was released this decade was any different from the garbage released in the 90s. Or the 80s. Lets not forget disco in the 70s...
Face it, every trend sucks, but there are consistent bands/music scenes out there. 2008 is proving to be a fucking AMAZING year for hardcore albums. Waiting for new Severed Savior. New Russian Circles is fucking brilliant. New Decrepit Birth is still good...

What other good metal stuff is coming out this year? I know I've heard other random news of bands, but I honestly can't remember right now...
and yes, the new Russian Circles is definitely one of my albums of the year. Highly encouraged that you buy it.

We all know the mainstream has been (largely) crap since the mainstream went mainstream. If only the mainstream could somehow become more underground like in the good ol' days...
Seriously, there are some good bands that get a lot of mainstream attention and a few bands who sound mainstream but don't.
