Megadeth-United Abominations

The album has been out a week now so I'm sure most of you have heard some of it by now. I haven't seen a thread on the album so far so I'm making one. For me this tops even TSHF. It is a true return to classic tone of Megadeth.

I'm making a poll to keep track of general responces.

No way, this was a big step down from tshf, really really disappointing.

I love it! Just heard it a round or two now. There's some good ol school thrash vibes all through it.

It's an average Megadeth album. Thought it would be something very special when I heard Sleepwalker but I find it lacking in memorable or great riffs. Dave plays the same solo(i.e. like the one thats at the end of Holy War) on nearly every song and most of the riffs sound like re-writes of the verse riff from Lucretia. There's some nice bits here and there but sadly it left me unmoved. And why waste album space with a re-recording of A Tout Le Monde????? The production is damn crisp something that was lacking on 'System Has Failed', but the 'System' album has better riffs, songs and ideas.

I almost bought it, but I was a little afraid. I guess I need to check it out now. I've read some of the lyrics/themes of some songs, they seemed a little odd...I'll buy it regardless, along with some more Dissection.

Sleepwalker verse riff reminds me of "Blackmail the Universe" first riff...the only way dave will get back to 80s/90s Megadeth is if he loses his fucking faith and gets fucking strung out...Oh and gets Marty Friedman to do the solos instead of himself. Yeah...that's how...It isn't bad but it doesn't make me want to fucking go crazy like Rust in Peace, Peace Sells... or Killing is My Business... oh and Toxik's rendition of "Out on the Tiles" is way better...

I have to ask. Why does faith have anything to do with how you sound? Dave is a reborn Christian, but why does that have shit to do with anything? He has been that way for 20 years now. I could care less what religion he believes. Dave makes nice music and for the most part writes from the view of someone that has no faith. If personal religious views limit your music appreciation than just step up and say so.

Just a reminder, the 90's were the fucking worst of Megadeth and the main reason being Marty Friedman. The dude was pop bubble rock 100% and still is to this day. He might be a great guitar player who could adapt to play with Jason Becker and later with Dave but he was not metal... only very talented. I can respect that but Marty isn't metal. Were is Friedman today?.... A pop rock JP band. He is doing what he loves. He and Dave are now better off.

Btw, Dave did most of the solos on Killing and Peace Sales. Marty didn't come into the picture until Rust, but even than Dave played a respectable amount of the solos. Check you Megadeth history.

I'm pretty sure Poland handled most of the lead work on those two, especially Peace Sells.

Poland probably did do more solos than Dave. At least on Peace Sells, but Dave still did a shit load of leads too. I would say its about 50/50 really but there are just to many solos that its hard to really measure who did more.

When religion interferes with a band's ability to play songs they wrote earlier in their career...then yes. It bothers me. When dave was doped up, drunk and angry his music was. When he became a born again christian the intensity of the music died. Age has nothing to do with it cuz Slayer has been keeping reasonably steady for 20+ years now. Even though a lot of their recent releases haven't been fast as hell their most recently "Christ Illusion" ain't half bad and a definite start back to their roots. Megadeth on the other hand has just about nothing that shows them returning to their roots other than perhaps a few "modified" riffs from older cds...

Oh and I know Marty Friedman didn't play on Peace Sells. My point was that although Dave is an amazing rhythm guitarist (not recently it seems) his ability to make equally good leads is not so amazing. This is why the earlier albums are usually considered the best because he has two lead guitar powerhouses working with him and it allows for a balance between the two "styles" of guitar. Oh and I don't give a fuck what Marty Friedman is doing now a days...when he was in Megadeth he rocked and maybe the fact that he wasn't metal was what allowed him to shine.

Saw em play a couple of the new songs live, and to be honest, way better than any of the last few albums before it.

I find it honestly hard to understand how you can be so negative to UA - Dave is fucking pissed and he tells us all about it. And to be honest, I like what he's done musically too; it's dirty and it's trash again. Sure, fine, the solos here and there could perhaps have used some more work, but what Dave want's here, the one thing, is to explain why the world situation in general and the UN specifically is making him want to hit someone in the head with a shovel and see their brain substance splatter all over the wall... and to my mind, he succeeds. Keep in mind how many bands out there also go into it on the basis "I'm angry" and remember how cool or touching that frequently ends up...

Considering it was released in 2007, it was pretty good. Dave sounds a bit more angry, the music is aggressive at least... still not as much fuckin riffage as I would like though. But it does sound like thrash metal. To be completely honest, I expected a lot worse

It's too bad there wasn't an option to vote "meh, it's ok, but Rust In Peace and Peace Sells is all the Megadeth I need".

I still have yet to hear all of United Abominations. I'm still stuck on their two best albums.

If I had intended a broader scope of things I might have tried to encompass every musical work Megadeth has ever done in the voting. I narrowed this threads voting to just United Abominations to keep things simple.

I personally enjoy the album a great deal. I like PS and RIP for what they will always be. Megadeth is still making some good stuff as far as I'm concerned. I would be disappointed if it were an absolute repeat from 2 decades ago. I like how some old raw thrash flavor has been brought back, but to repeat yourself and not grow is to sign your own musical death warrant.

How true, soul and MTM.

Still, there are more interesing aspects to this album. The disillusion with the UN is bordering on overwhelming, and at least to a degree I agree with Mustaine on this.
Thoughts, anyone?
