Tell me if you guys think of this as a good idea;

I've been thinking of one day getting a little brass ensemble together and cover various metal bands, such as Death, Necrophagist, Opeth, maybe Strapping young lad, and so on. Get like trumpet, baritone, trombone, tuba, and have a rhythm section consisting of piano, drums (of course), electric/stand-up bass, and clean/accoustic guitar. Vocals would be clean as well, but as far as what notes to sing to accompany the music, I dunno. I'm thinking it could work, but I was wondering what you guys think. Do you think it could work? If there's even a remote chance, I'd really love to pursue it as like a side project.

eh, it's sort of been done before with Metallica and I really didn't like how that came out. Songs like Nothing Else Matters came out alright but for songs like Master of Puppets it just sounded retarded. Yngwie Malmsteen did something like it where he stood in front of an orchestra and played leads on an acoustic, and I did sorta like that. So it's not like it's a particularly bad idea, it just seems like it's an idea that is extremely apt to be frowned on by most people and ultimately become a fiasco. With Yngwie it would naturally work out because he plays neo-classical as it is. But with more contemporary style bands it'd be extremely hard to pull off and sound good, especially with the bands you suggested. But by all means, try it if you feel strongly enough about it and feel like you won't fuck it up.

The kind of folks who make our shoes for pennies, the non-unionized slave labor elsewhere that make it possible to buy cheaply, poorly made shit.

Some people are catching on, the fact that nearly every item of food on the supermarket shelves is unhealthy, factory automated shit covered in pesticides and treated with god knows what. Every product at the Wal-Mart,K-mart,Target,etc is junk. It's made to fall apart in a given amount of time, it's not made to be repaired, all parts are proprietary and it's soon to be obsolete.

If our descent from being a superpower changes this country in a more positive, less fragmented, less arrogant, less jingoistic direction......I'm all for it.

Technological advancements, the prosperity of wealth, power itself can take a backseat as we are forced to live in greater harmony with each other and the world.

And the current generation, and even future generations, don't seem to be getting much better. People in this country need a wake up call. The problem with wishing for an economic dowturn is that it leads to high unemployment (as companies fail), high inflation (as those still in business attempt to stay afloat by putting prices up) and high interest rates (in an attempt to reduce inflation). What does this lead to? High crime and increased levels of poverty along with low levels of government investment in public services.

I can't believe anybody gets excited by stock markets falling. Companies are basically the reason why the Developed world is as prosperous as it is. They are responsible for employing millions and millions of people and contribute a huge level of taxation to the public coffers.

They are also large enough to absorb the additional cost associated with "green" activities. Can your average self-employed person afford to put into practise more expensive green policies? Probably, but at that level margins are tight; economies of scale are not obtained and it is invariably cheaper to, say, run a diesel van than a hybrid-electric van. Saving the planet comes a distant second to putting food on the table at this level (which would be the only level if companies failed).

I'm not saying the large publicly traded companies are perfect - far from it - but to dismiss their contribution to the economy and their vital role in maintaining the standard of living we have taken for granted in the Developed world is absolute folly and naive.

Rich people are the last to suffer when the economy goes south. As Mansley just pointed out, every time a rich investor loses a few thousand or hundred thousand or million dollars he can afford to lose, a couple dozen or more workers get laid off or an entire factory gets relocated to a country with more lax labor laws than our own in order to counteract the downswing. Necessity is the only force that seems likely to bring about positive change, but rich assholes are by their nature the least likely to be touched by necessity. They also have a tendency to be good at getting justified anger inspired at them pointed in the wrong direction, at easy shadow targets.

And, of course, there's always the simple fact that a lot of what's worthwhile and needs to be done by our country can only be done by men of means, and if it's being done at all, and it usually is on a smaller scale than would be desired, it's being done by the same people who are hurt when the stock market dips.

Don't forgot PMC's to make the mix more interesting (where applicable).

Yup, it seems to be a very populair choice to outsource work to a country with low wages. The employment rate seems to skyrocket in some countries whilst there is a lot of economic growth. Figure that one out.

I think both you and John are forgetting one important fact here, if the North-American economic climate crashes then the (western!) world economy is pretty much fucked. We all know American economics are a soap-bubble that's just waiting to pop but nobody knows when it's going to happen.
European company's are pretty much done in investing over there and they invest in India and China which are both 'booming business' at the moment.

The Dutchies for instance will get a big blow because we're the perfect example of an import/export economy, thus relying on the basic streams of bulk cargo. If these change it will take some time to re-adjust but we'll survive.

Ofcourse it is very doubfull to say that the bubble will eventually pop, so long as the western world doesn't 'want' it too, it probably won't happen. But who knows what will happen if Eastern country's throw in an insteresting marketing mix.

Low-tech has a very good point though, if America can live in greater harmony with the world, then this basically means the whole world can prosper from that. Just look at the past, when political relations with America and Europe where better, the business was better. Lately it's been blooming again but it was pretty shitty when the war in Iraq started. If relations keep deteriorating who knows what will happen, I might be talking like a dark propheth here but it's just a mind fart, so consider that when you read this

If we recap back to 9/11 you could say it has had it's benefits and downfalls for the American economy and politics. But it's been crucial in the developments on some fronts and in that way that terrorist attack has had way more impact then Bin Laden would have ever imagined. Which in it's turn is a quite interesting topic.

I just see it as necessity will force change, hopefully positive change........my stock market comment was more or less a joke.

People are more curious about alternative fuel sources and their behavior and attitudes do change in small ways from the high gas prices, especially at a time when a lot of people own monsterous vehicles that go about a mile per gallon.

10 years ago, alternative energy sources, possible alternative fuel sources for vehicles was not even remotely taken seriously, people would baulk at such notions........nowadays when folks are getting pinched hard in the wallet they seem a little more open to the idea.

It's a good thing tho, that's what I want......and I think things like that, re-examining the bigger picture beyond personal comfort and distraction is positive.......if that requires some hardship to realize the status quo must change to better survive, I'm all for it.

It just seems like the warning signs have been out there for decades and no one gave a shit unless they are personally compromised.
