New Boss Metal Core ML-2 pedal

Anyone had a chance to play one yet? Apparently it has even more gain than a MetalZone..... There's a video on Boss' website of it in action. Blatent ripoff of the 5150-type sound. Not personally interested but some of you guys might be. www.bossus.com

Good lord no. Well, it was bound to happen.

Quote:
With its extreme gain, the ML-2 is the most potent and heavy distortion pedal ever created by BOSS. It easily delivers massive distortion and gain with heavy lows for playing Nu Metal, Grind Core, Industrial, Hard Core, or any genre that requires crushing sound. The ML-2ís ferocious and biting tone will complement and cut through any blast beats your rhythm section can create.

* Ultra-heavy distortion with sharp-edged attack for crushing metal riffs
* LOW control for heavy, low frequency sound a la 7-string guitar or dropped tuning
* HIGH control for screaming, metallic tone
* Road-tough BOSS metal construction

HAH! Hmm, well at least they mentioned the terms grindcore and blastbeat.

There's no point in talking shit about it because it's only worth it if you've got like a $100 POS amp and need the gain. Otherwise hopefully everyone would be smart enough to not use it on a half-decent amp.

I'm actually very curious about it though, who knows maybe it would work very well as a preamp running it straight into the FX return of an amp with no distortion at all. I'd love to try it if I get the chance to be honest.

I think many of us would accept that judging by certain SS Amps that have performed very well for metal, one of these days a pedal may come along that offers a viable alternative to your tube distortion. A couple of my favourite albums were produced using the Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 as the main distortion (Jesters Race (In Flames) + Orchid (Opeth)). Thinking about it, many companies that are making tube amps for metal are trying to replicate the 'tight' SS characteristics; Krank Krankenstein and to my ears the 5150 has a very transistor type tone to it. Anyway, I still reckon this pedal might suck!

5150? That's as raw of a tube tone as you can bet...

I guess tone is subjective. My experience of listening to 5150's is that it is too controlled + flat. Almost like a wall of noise with no peaks or troughs. Kinda like the EMG of the amp world; less character. Its hard to describe, the word 'blunt' kind of sums it up. Just my opinion and I still rate it highly as a Metal amp, just not one I'd be interested in.

Orchid was mostly old 50 watt Marshalls, not really much of the HM-2.

The no mid control is kidna gay, apart from that dosen't look too bad if you've only got a basicish SS amp. Anyone know the retail?

Yeah it was a JCM800, but it was boosted using the HM-2, read it in an interview with Akerfelt once.

Orchid emo:

it's instrument level not line level so it wouldnt work as a preamp.

ive had a metalcore for about 11 months and i rate it 6.5/10. theres alot of potential for it if your just messing around, but for recording i get pissed at it all the time. not even a good tube amp can get out that high level saturation upper mid noise that NEVER goes away. i though it was my amps for the longest time, its the pedal. its not bad by any means but its not worthy of recording stuff. its NOT for chords, any past two noted power chords is going to ring terrible upper mid noise.

if you run this through a mesa or any super great amp you may get better results, i ran mine though a marshall vs100.
