Sorry all, this issue is from 2001.
I have a manic fear of umlauts, hence the omission.

They were down in the 60's or 70's (the list was actually a top 100, but I'm fucked if I'm reproducing it in it's entirety).

At least Death was ahead of Metallica.

Yeah, Discharge definitely seems to be widely unrecognized for speeding up metal, despite that they're a punk band. I've heard some say that they themselves actually did start speed metal (although I don't completely agree). After all, let us not forget that if it weren't for punk, generally speaking, speed/thrash would have never been.

They became a thrash band. They belong higher on the list.

So, Discharge was a punk band who played with speed and became thrash? Very cool, and I'm surprised now that I haven't heard of them before!!

I'm taken aback by how good this list is. It's not my list, for sure, but for a list compiled in a popular magazine, it's fucking good. The main bands left out that I would have are Deep Purple and Megadeth. I definitely would have left Godflesh off the list. Other than that, every band on the list is either popular, good, or highly influential- in most cases all three.

Suicidal Tendencies, too.
Punk is inherently fast, and thrash metal can be described as traditional metal infused with punk elements. If you think about it, it's not altogether unnatural for a punk band to morph into thrash or vice versa.

it just pisses me off when I see black sabbath at the top of the list.
if your going for influential than that is A-OK because that is what they are
but i think Sleep is better at being sabbath than sabbath is at being sabbath. they are pretty damn underrateed

I don't see them as death metal in the least. Experimental doom that inspired so many bands. I just can't like them for some reason.

Black Sabbath invariably top these sort of metal lists because in 99.99% of cases they've influenced every band below them, either directly or indirectly, to produce the music that they do.
If I get enough people wanting to see from 21-100 I'll post the rest.

Just do it in incriments of 10. Over the next couple of days or so. That way we can discuss only a few at a time.

This has been a good thread, so yeah I'd like to see the rest of the list.

Just put up the parts of the list that will get people to complain the most loudly. Louder the better. I should be able to hear keys tapped in furious anger through all the snow in Chicago.

id put bad brains up but it isnt a direct influence on metal, just the drumming.
the reason why i say it, is because they were pretty much the first band that had songs clock in around 230-240bpm with quarternote thrashbeats, but this a real far stretch and it would require explaining where a list should be straight up.
this list is good.
motorhead and discharge are overwhelmingly important for this list and im glad to see them mentioned. harsh vocals pretty much started with discharge, which was, for thier time, a nod to lemmy's rusty, whiskey rawed vocal delivery.
huge impact on death metal and grindcore during the 80s

I'll start putting them up in chunks of twenty tonight when I get home. Depending on time, the whole list should be up by the weekend.
