You know... most of it has to do with the progression. You could play major chords and make them seem sad if you use them in the right progression.

True. I'd say it's 25% what chords you use, and 75% how you use them. Take Heavenly for instance. Not exactly the widest showcase of chords but they seem to have mastered the art of progression. But anyway, some fun chords I use a lot are (don't know the names) that one where it's the powerchord but with the extra 5th and then also the reverse of that (finger placement-wise), the diminshed, which is basically an inverted (minor) powerchord with the extension. So the first shape is:

e:-x-
B:-x-
G:-x-
D:-7-
A:-5-
E:-3-

and the other would be:

e:-x-
B:-x-
G:-x-
D:-3-
A:-5-
E:-7-

Sounds more like a theory question than a guitar question.

That's called a ninth, or add' ninth, because you don't have a third or seventh or much else in there. your first example. But I quite agree about those percentages.

I found a successful way of getting a sad sound is to use a minor key and keep using the thirds of the notes you use.

A couple of good chords is you use homophony are:

Code:
m9 M7 [------------------] [------------------] [0--------1--------] [4--------1--------] [2--------2--------] [0--------0--------] Disregarding key, just showing them in open position.

Try arpeggiating them behind a melody or something. For melodies, stick around the Aeolian and Phrygian modes, of course, in the same key as your chords.

Hope's it helpful! - Callum.

Opeth uses a lot of seconds and root + octave in their songs.

And yeah, it's more about progression than the chord itself.
