Gimme' Bass Gear

Hey guys, i'm a guitar player mainly, but i've started filling in on bass for a local band that can't find a decent bass player.

Now, being a guitar player, i'm gonna be playing with a pick for atleast the first few months until I atleast grasp the basics of finger techniques, so don't give me shit for that please, you finger mongers.

Anyhow, I recently bought a Dean Sledgehammer 5-String for relatively cheap, it seems like a good deal for me. Mahogany body, which I hope will counteract the loss of bass from using a pick somewhat and a single high output humbucker and long scale.

I have around £500-600 tops to spend on a bass amp. I don't want anything too huge, like one of those 8x10 cabs or whatever they are, but I want something that has alot of scoopy punch in the mids and low end grind to it, not too boomy or flabby, with a high end that can cut through if needed, nothing to muddy. I dunno if that shitty description makes sense, but please, recommend away, I know nothing of bass amps.

I like the tone of Decapitated's bass player on the latest album, it's very growly. But that's probably one of those £1000000 Ampeg SVT's right? I can't afford that.

well, considdering 600 brit. pounds is about 1300 american...
youre not really limited on what you can get.
I'd say get an ampeg 4x10, a 1x15, and either an ampeg hybrid or some other tube/hybrid head (swr ampeg genzbenz tech21 fender)
600 pounds is ALOT of money, and you have many many options.

Hmm... i'm sure £600 is alot of money if converted to dollars, but unfortunetly I cannot purchase from the USA and those Ampeg prices are really high over here.

I can afford maybe a 2x10 and a solid state head in the Ampeg ranges.

Are Warwick cabs any good?

I was in your situation not too long ago. I am a guitar player who plays bass in a local band. We've had a few rock shows at bars last year. I ended up buying an ampeg solid state and a 2x10+ 1x15 cab.

I'd say that it really depends on your audience and your goals. If you don't plan on being a bass player and intend to sell your gear when you're done, then buy something that you will have no problem selling. Also, if you plan on doing shows through a P.A. system, then the cab is really just for a monitor and you play through the head.

Good luck.

PS, I still play with a dunlop 3mm big stubby and occassionally use my fingers for slower songs.
