I might be a Dumbass but does anyone else do this?
Just turn all the knobs on your bass up then just mess with volume on your amp?I dont like EQs and presence controls.I like to hear my bass raw.My Peaveys are monsters!

well, as much as I doubt that this would hurt the bass.
youre definitely robbing yourself of the best possible tone you could get out of a novice range peavey.

Use your bass output controls and your amp controls man.... You'll get a really precise tone. That's really all I can say, it's up to you man.

Are you talking on just the bass, or the amp too? The only time I've done that is on a bass that has just volume and tone controls, because usually there isnt much flexibilty in the tone of something that simple anyway. Anything with any kind of advanced onboard EQ you like to take advantage of, and always use the controls of the amplifier no matter what kind of bass it is. Lots of times you are going to have to readjust for different places you go because different rooms have different acoustics. May sound great one place, and shit in another.

Punk?!?!? wtf are you talking about man? This is a fucking metal forum, not a washed up punk forum. I don't know what your view is on metal...but in my opinion, us metalheads try to keep things technical and clean in alot of ways...the idea of punk is to sound bad on purpose. Metal takes pride in having something called talent.

"BRUTALITY OVER TECHNICALITY"??? They can go hand in hand man...Combine Brutality, Technicality and Talent...and you have one hell of a fucking band.

what I meant by that is, its a low price and quality range peavey...as far as peaveys go, and doing that is going to rob you out of any kind of decent tone you could have possibly managed to pull out of it.
you started off this thread by calling yourself a dumbass, dont turn around and get pissed at raw critisism.
edit:I hated geezers tone. no growl or grit at all. Go for that live cannibal corpse tone and you could make anything sound brutal.

I still think it's a shitty idea...I wouldn't want a tone like Mark Hoppus

OK well you do have a good point... I do like a nice bright sharp metallic tone, like Chris in Anti-Flag. But it just doesn't suit metal IMO.

i think it would suit metal fine, but thats subjective, we can agree his tone is great though, especially for what he plays.

Yeah, for that style of music it is quite catchy...I like a bass tone that cuts through the mix, yet still shakes the floor, the perfect balance.

sure lets put some dude wearing a cc shirt whos only been playing guitar for a month, who only knows brutal death metal songs and a 12 year old kid on drums who just blastbeats the whole time, lets see how many people dig that!
focus on the SONG, not whether or not its brutal or melodic, write the song how it needs to be written, if all you do is write brain numbing brutal riffs, then you will never develop a sense of melody and every riff you will ever write will sound the same, yes on one hand you will be unique, but on the other hand youll just be another one-dimensional guitarist who can only shred and write brutal as crap riffs.

oh and about your tone, the main thing with bass is to achieve a balanced tone. One that blends yet at the same time sticks out. I would say turn your volume nob up, leave your treble fairly low, and turn your mids up about 1/3 to half of the way and no higher. Then you will have a good bass filled clean tone that anybody can appreciate.
