No, it was neither. Bass strings break, they are not indestructible They probably broke quicker because I was playing un plugged the majority of the time.

Hmmm, its just weird to me, ive never broken a bass string in my life. What kind of strings do you use?

I broke my A string once in the middle of a song where MASSIVE improvisation was required. It was not a good time, but managed to make it through. Turns out I had a tiny burr in the saddle of the bridge. Other than that, I've only had one string break, and that was as I was putting on the new set...defective string. The core wire was broken by the ball.
Also...I've yet to see a music store that won't sell you an individual bass string, (unless it's a high-C string, which most of them don't seem to carry...alas)
Cheers.

It seems everyone here either breaks them very rarely or relatively frequently.
Valtiel, I think the gauge might be just as important as the quality of strings. To all those that have posted regarding how many strings they broke, what gauges and kinds of strings do you all use?
Small music stores do NOT sell individual bass strings. In fact, the biggest music store in my city only started selling individual strings 3-4 years ago.

BassB-playing a long time doesnt mean you have good technique, you could've learned something horribly damaging to your strings and not even know it.
as for me, the only string ive ever broken was trying to tenor tune and my D broke, that was stupid of me

Hell, I haven't broke THAT many strings. Probably 4 or so in six years. Like I said, I used to play a lot un plugged, therefore playing harder. And now that I think of it, most of the one's I broke I was completely screwing around and not playing normally. I assure you I don't have a bad technique, I was taught for two years by a very respectable bassist..whom even had a CBC show shown nationally. It was a Battle of the Bands type thing he ran.

You're right, thinner gauge strings will be more prone to breakage simply because they have less tension which = more travel which = higher chance of breakage.

They are usually quite visible.. some people say replace the bridge completely, but if you get some good grit sandpaper, carefully you can sand them out..
