quick simple question

heres a quick question about arpeggios and crap. I just want to see if ive been misunderstanding something.

now lets start with the major arpeggio obviously the structure for one is 135. simple. no problems here.

now the minor arpeggio
the structure for it is 1 3b 5

now as for my question lets say were playing in the key of C. and we just keep repeating whole notes of C chords(major obviously) for every measure for the sake of simplicity. If I wanted to play the Cm arpeggio over the chord would I play it strictly as 1 3b 5. Ive always just went straight to the A minor Arpeggio for my basic minors in the key of C.

I'm not exactly sure as to what you asking but the 1 3b 5 with root (1) being C should be fine. Sorry if i misunderstood your question.

you probably did misunderstand my question, its simple but at the same time very weird to say. let me try and rephrase it

if you goto places like www.looknohands.com they will give you a formula for C minor that is 1 3b 5 obviously. but if I was playing in the key of c and I wanted a minor sound I would go straight to A minor(the sixth mode of this key)

I was wondering if its okay to play the Cm instead of the Am. This is probably a dumb question but my curiosity stems from those chords with those notes out of the original key like dominant 7th chords.

I've seen that formula before. They called it the minor triad.
Then you sharpen the 3 for a major triad.

It's funny how they work when you look at the intervals in numbers of semitones.

Minor - 3 then 4 semitones
Major - 4 then 3 semitones
(ascending, each followed by 5 semitones to the octave)

Makes sense really.

Hey northerndragon,

The reason you wanna play a Am arpeggio in the key of C major is becuase Am is the relative minor to C major. The relative minor is located 3 semitones down from the major scale key your in. So if you want the Cm arpeggio, then E major arpeggio would be the relative major scale. Is that what you wanted to know?

if youre asking if youd play a Cmin arpeggio on a C chord.. you wouldnt want to because the 3 and flat 3 would clash
