I was just listening to Dark Tranquility's "Exposures; In Retrospect and Denial." Awesome CD. Sucks, thought, because it started skipping on the 7th track.

haha, yeah I know what you mean...

Oh, NORTHER.

There are so many bands of this genre, the best bet is too look it up at metal archives or the Metal Observer.

Hey hey hey hey hey hey WAIT!

Ominium Gatherum? I just got a track from them last night on this brutal death/black/grind compilation and they were definately some fucking crushingly heavy brutal death band. Are there 2 or something? Maybe I'm just wrong and should have looked at this before I posted.

No Idea...but it's these guys I was talking about.

http://www.omniumgatherum.org/

I have their first album(special edition with a lot of bonus songs) and it's pretty badass. A lot of solid catchy songs.

I used to be hugely into melo death but over time I've brushed it aside. Still love AA to death tho, and Arsis too although they incorporate too much other influences to be considered mdm. Tech and brutal DM with melody like Psycroptic is where its at.

Dismember, Entombed, and all the other old Swedish bands don't count, AtG do though(I don't like them, nor an of their clone bands).

Kalmah and Insomnium are my big ones for melo death. I can listen to all their albums all the way through and never want to skip a track. That's money well spent.

I used to be huge on the melodic stuff, but it hasnt really piqued my interest as of late. I love Heartwork-era Carcass, and Dismember's "Like an Everflowing Stream" (is that melodeath?), but other than that, I find myself listening to alot of other stuff, whether it be brutal death, 80s thrash, or even black metal. God, I remember I used to love it though, especially Soilwork, and especially "The Chainheart Machine". That album was aces

When the genre first got started back in the mid-90's, it was a really good idea. Combining Iron Maiden-esque melodies that were tuned down a bunch, mixed with harsh vocals is a great combo. The problem is that when 3,440,990,979,551,234 bands agree with my previous statement, it got overly stagnated and it is getting really, really stale now.

yes slaughter of the soul is very melodic ( one of the best death metal albu in the history) but IMHO not so "sweet" for melodic death metal.

Yeah..you're a fool, even their older shit was as well. And minus the first two/three albums, Death is melodic Death metal.

No way in hell. It's overhyped as fuck.

With so many clone bands nowadays like BDM, The Absence(sorry ih27frets!), etc. and a billion fucking metalcore bands that ripped off the Gothenburg sound, there's nothing new in the scene, it's just a pool of bands ripping each other off. So how does a ripoff of a ripoff done a million times sound? Pretty boring to me.

Btw, Wintersun are viking/melodic speed, there are no elements of death metal in their music.

So, I guess the melodic death metal tag is a falsehood since all the bands that have ever been categorized as such have nothing to do with Suffocation or Morbid Angel, or any bands like those. I agree, that these bands really aren't DM, I have just conformed to the genre label I guess. Sad ain't it? Honestly, it's probably the worst genre tag in metal's history as all these bands (Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, In Flames etc.) have much more to do with thrash, and basically nothing to do with Death Metal. If there was a best band ever that's been classified as melodic death, I'd say it's Dissection, but really weren't they more blackened thrash anyway?

Dt and inflames are melodic death metal and not trash also
for the use of growling in vocals and because their songs deal with ( for blood red bass : yes I know this verb) death and other tipical death metal tematics.

Yeah early In Flames and DT is genuine DM. Like Lunar Strain and shit, that's pretty DM just more melodic, it even reminds me of Cynic and Atheist at times. But then both just sort of went different ways, IF went mallcore after Colony/Clayman and DT are just more of an industrial extreme band, not really DM anymore. But most Gothenburg bands have more traditional metal influence(ie: Ozzy, Maiden, Priest) than anything else, so I feel "death metal" is inappropriate in most cases for these bands. But hey, there is no definite sound for death metal either, Morbid sounds nothing like Obituary nor do they sound like Cynic or Severed Savior or Psycroptic. I think DM is very varied, it's not just Cannibal Corpse nowadays, while mdm is just too narrow, only 1 kind of sound that doesn't expand...

The only Swedish style melo death bands that are really death metal bands are those that took after Dismember and Entombed, which aren't many really(ie: Amon Amarth... can't think of any more!).

Earlier AtG is definately real melo death but then they sort of abandoned that and started playing more commercial groove/extreme metal(like The Haunted) before they split up.

EDIT: By the way, calling bands like Children of Bodom, Norther, Ensiferum and similar Finnish bands death metal is also very off. They're just modern speed/power with extreme vocals, with the exception of Ensiferum and Wintersun which have modern viking metal influence(like all the Oooooh singing ), I don't see any death metal at all in there. Cool bands though, especially Ensiferum and Wintersun.

And good riddance. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

I ended up listening to all of "Ghost Reveries" from Opeth. First time I had, thanks to this long ass traffic jam. Awesome cd. Never realized it.

Passenger is a nu metal band, and Norther have no death elements at all. The rest are fine if you ignore the external(prog, black, thrash on Arsis, power or folk respectively) influences on Arsis, Into Eternity, and Suidakra. Yeah Opeth were death prog, now they're just prog extreme metal, no really defined sound nowadays I think.

I think Arsis are just plain ol classically/proggy inspired tech death metal.

Death was DM of course, then evolved into prog death, it's all the gothencore bands that stole their sound and Carcass'.

I really don't give a flying fuck about genre classifications, if it's good I'll like it, but given the similar nature of so many bands, it's bound to happen(people labeling them).

Intestine Baalism are a Dismember style band, not really melodic but if you like melo death with a more traditional DM edge you'll love them.

that is a terrible observation. im not trying to start shit, so dont get worked up over it, but Mirror of Madness has plenty of melo-death to it. for ex. midnight walker and mirror of madness. on top of that there are a hell of a lot of riffs throughout the album that would easily count as "death elements". i mean, if skyfire and kalmah can be called melodic death, norther sure as hell can too.

I disagree, death metal is far more aggressive in nature, even melo death. Norther are a cool band but they're nowhere even close to being considered DM. Kalmah is a similar band that fits the category because they really take after death metal bands, Norther just take influence from power, speed and thrash metal bands. They are as much of a death metal band as Children of Bodom.

fair enough. so youre talking about the overall sound of it right? for me, if i hear a riff i think sounds black, i call it a black element, if i hear a death sounding riff, death element. may not be effective in all cases, but decent enough so far. yes, i hear the thrash and power, but i still feel melo-death out of it as well.

They used to play proggish melo death in their early days, and slowly brushed aside the few death elements they had...

Death with Devildriver fanboys. And there was death, so die you homeless necrophile. Would any of you consider Ensiferum MeloDeath?

If anyone can find my lyrical quote and name the band in the above statement you get one dollar.

Disclaimer: I reserve all rights not to give you the dollar just because i say so.

What about Paths Of Possession? I am not sure of them myself, what I've heard was a little on the generic side. Although that is one kickass album cover they have.
