i went to the store today and tried the XXX for the first time and man I love it. Just curious how do you guys like the stock XXX cabs? What cab should I run it through next time im in the store? How different does the 5150 sound from the XXX? By the way I tried an old used blue voodoo and I didn't like it. I even tried it through a marshall 1960 cab and it only sounded a little better than the crate cab. Just wasnt near as nice of soound as the XXX. You guys think Id like the 5150?( was looking at them on ebay)

i preffer the 5150's. but it's a totally different sound, the xxx is a bit more polished up, and the 5150 is more raw.

I prefer the 5150 tone myself. I find the XXX to have a tighter, more focused, buzzsaw type gain, while the 5150 is thick and chunky.
The new Windsor that's coming out soon is supposed to be pretty cool form what I hear. I just picked up a Penta and I'm loving it.

from my experiences i should like the 5150 tone by its descriptions. i prefer the raw raunchy (in a very good way) tone, but when i played both(cranked) the xxx sounded alot better to me. i figure you have to tweek the 5150 more than i did though. i hear its not an amp you can just tunr the nobs and get a good sound on. it was the first time dimed mids diddnt sound good. usually thats all i do for an amp it sound greta to me. if you get the combo you will prebly want to replace the speaker.

Yeah I was thinking the FJA one, after hearing many good news from their 5150 mods. Getting rid of the buzziness in the dist. is one thing I want, as it seems like that's one thing they take care of really well.

I saw a 5150 and crate cab advertized in craigslist for $800. I email him and say I'll give him $500. He says ok so I went to look at it. I wasn't able to bring my guitar (I can only seem to play well on my guitar, the action and everything is how I like it to be) All he had was a jackson kelly with duncan designed crap for pickups, he said the strings are probably 4 yrs old lol, anyhow i found it very frustrating to play. The amp looked to be hardly used and the cab is a 4x10 crate with no model number, non slanted, but has castors. When I plugged it in I heard absolute crap. My crappy solid state amp sounds better than that shit. I know it had a lot to do with the pickups in the guitar(I use active emg's) and maybe the cab. You guys think the old crate cab is the culprit? How much could I get for it if I were to sell for something better? Any suggestions on better cabs that I might find used?

The guy said he'd take $400 for it after I told him it sounded like shit and said I was going to try out some more amps. I'm hoping I can just get the 5150 for like $350.. that would be awesome, assuming the bad sound was not because of the amp. I'm gonna bring my jackson soloist over there tomorrow and see if I can't get a good sound because if I get it I wont be able to afford a better cab until next month unless I can get 200 or more for the crate cab somehow.

You need to fuck with the EQ.If you have the gain up too high,it sounds like crap.They dont do a great clean/crunch,either.That and the combination of the cab and guitar,I would blame.

i bet it's the cab and the guitar... either way, you're a fool if you let that deal go. $400 for a 5150 and a shitty cab... the 5150 alone is worth a little over $500 on the used market. you could turn a profit off of this.
